Name of the group/organization requesting funds. Arushi Society 2. When was the group established? Briefly describe the motivation for starting this group. The organisation started its activities keeping in mind the various educational needs of visually impaired students. Volunteers started recording textbooks in audio for school children & later the lack of such initiatives motivated the founder members to increase their scope and range of activities towards all kind of disabilities. 4. Briefly describe the aims of your group. 1. Inculcating self confidence through Education and Training. 2. Linking persons with disabilties to various developmental schemes. 3. Creating a forum to express their concerns and advocate their rights. 4. Disseminating information to persons with disabilities on various aspects of rehabilitation. 5. Developing a cadre of trained professionals to work with impaired persons for their integration. 6. Creating awareness in the society to foster a positive attitude. 7. Undertaking research based activities to complement the above-mentioned objectives.

What non education-related community development activities is your group involved in? Advocacy and Lobbying on disability issues. Rehabilitation of Persons with disabilities. Generating awareness about disability issues among masses. Creation of a barrier free environment at public places (such as the railway station, hotels, markets, colleges, banks etc.) Part II: Details about your educational project/s 7. So far ARUSHI is not running any school but is helping children with disabilities studying in regular schools through its Ability Development Center at Bhopal where children are given extra- educational inputs. 8. Special education & intervention for children with different disabilities, to equip them with school readiness skills. 10. Please tell us about your teaching techniques (conventional vs. alternative). Alternative teaching techniques, catering to the needs of children with disabilities as per their special needs so that they can cope up with challenges in a regular school. 11. What is the literacy rate in the local community?

If any of your students are employed, please tell us about that as well. Generally the children belong to the economically deprived sections of the community e.g. slums, whose parents are generally employed in labour intensive tasks & are without much or even basic education. 13. In addition to education, does your group provide any other services to the children in your schools (e.g. food, health care, clothing, etc.)? Yes, other services include mid-day meals, healthcare, school uniforms, conveyance for school, school fees, books, study material as well as enriching reading material/books in alternative formats i.e. Braille & Audio; vocational training & support for appropriate placement etc are offered by the organization. 14. Almost two hundred students have directly benefited from our effords at the Ability Development Center in the last five years. Most of the children when admitted here were quite young & are still pursuing their studies. Training in daily living skills, computers, & vocational work is also provided at our Ability Development Center.ARUSHI has helped disabled persons in finding suitable placements & some of them are working in different fields like software companies, higher education(professor), hotel management etc.

Yes, ARUSHI is constantly in touch with its target group & extends help to Persons with disabilities in all possible ways. 20. Are there any other schools (Kindergarten/Balwadi, Elementary school, High school) in the area? If so, please list the schools and the range of classes each of them offers. As Bhopal is the Capital of Madhya Pradesh it has a large number of institutions of different kinds but none of these cater to the special needs of children with different disabilities. 21. Is your program different from that provided at these schools? Please explain. The children with different disabilities have their special needs. Blind children need to be given training in the activities of daily living: orientation & mobility, reading & writing through Braille, use of computer with the help of text-to-speech tools etc. Besides, children with low vision also need to be trained in the use of their residual vision; the hearing impaired need additional inputs by way of early language training & speech therapy; the children with Cerebral Palsy & physical impairment need physiotherapy & training; the children with mental retardation need individualized education; so ARUSHI provides these children with their above mentioned special needs. 22. Why are the children in your school/s not attending government/other schools in the local area? ARUSHI intends to start Pre-School for children with disabilities. Currently, no such school provides the kind of facility that we inntend to provide.

The parents are an integral part of our program. Overall development is not possible without their active interest and support. 24. What are your expansion plans for the future (e.g. adding more classes or schools)? We plan to come up with a well equipped 'Resource Center' for Persons with disabilities to facilitate inclusive education. 25. Do you have any suggestions on how Asha can be a positive influence in changing the education scenario in India? 26.
