1 JOB ANNOUNCEMENT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Seattle, Washington - January 2018 Team Read seeks an Executive Director who shares its belief that reading is the foundation for all academic success, and that teens have tremendous capacity to be powerful tutors, role models and mentors. For 20 years, Team Read has paired 2nd and 3rd grade students who are struggling to read at grade level with trained, paid teenage reading coaches to deliver a structured reading curriculum through one-on-one tutoring. The dual impact of this unique model is well-documented: Team Read students make measurable gains in reading proficiency, and teens develop essential skills to succeed in college, work, and life. With a history of proven success, Team Read is eager to expand its reach in the Seattle area as well as bring the program to other districts in King County and beyond. Team Read is seeking a talented leader who can guide the organization through this period of change and growth. The successful candidate will have experience in scaling programs or organizations, and a strong foundation in fundraising and board and staff development. The Executive Director must be experienced in navigating and maintaining public and private partnerships and in forging new partnerships to support the mission of the organization. 2 MISSION Teens tutoring kids to achieve reading success DUAL IMPACT Team Read s one-to-one tutoring model enables students to become confident readers with the necessary reading skills for academic success. Reading coaches are carefully trained to provide a structured reading curriculum that includes sight words, phonics, reading comprehension, and fluency. Team Read students develop trusting relationships with their teen mentors, who in many cases come from similar backgrounds and act as a role model of a successful student who looks like them or speaks their language of origin. The teen reading coaches gain valuable work skills and the satisfaction of changing the lives of children while also acquiring tangible benefits such as pay, college savings, and service hours. Team Read s measurable impact is striking, for both children and teens 70% of students more than double their prior year reading level 90% of referring teachers agree that their students reading abilities have improved because of Team Read 90% of families agree that Team Read helped their child learn to read 91% of reading coaches say Team Read gave them skills they can use in other work now or in the future 91% of reading coaches say Team Read showed them how to work with different kinds of people 92% of reading coaches report their roles gave them a chance to make a difference and gave them a sense of accomplishment * Data taken from program evaluation Organizational Overview Every child deserves to be a great reader. Not only do children deserve to be great readers, but they must be great readers if they are to thrive academically and have successful futures. If children cannot read in our increasingly technology and information driven world, they face chilling consequences: students who are reading below grade level at the end of third grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school. The fact that an estimated 50% of low-income children of color and English Language Learners are reading below standard is one of the most serious social justice issues faced by our community. In its 20-year history, Team Read has served nearly 20,000 elementary, middle and high school students in the greater Seattle area. The Team Read after school and summer reading program pairs carefully trained 8th-12th grade teen reading coaches with 2nd-3rd grade readers who are reading below grade level for one-on-one reading tutoring sessions. The goal is for the 2nd-3rd grade students we serve to become better, more confident readers. Team Read partners with school districts, public libraries and other community organizations to deliver the program, and receives additional funding from foundations and individuals. Team Read currently operates out of 12 sites, and partners with the school districts to employ about 300 teen tutors annually. Team Read has a staff of 6, an active Board of Directors with 19 members, and an annual operating budget of close to $1 million. Significant additional financial resources and talents are leveraged through partnerships with Seattle Public Schools and Highline Public Schools.
3 Executive director opportunities AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Executive Director provides strategic leadership and direction to ensure that Team Read achieves its mission of Teens helping kids achieve reading success. After 20 years of implementing its model with impressive results, Team Read is driven by a tremendous sense of urgency to expand. In May of 2015, the Team Read Board of Directors approved a Strategic Growth Plan designed to double the number of students served. Significant progress has been made toward this goal expanding outside of the Seattle Public School district into Highline Public Schools in 2016, with additional districts in South King County being considered as areas for program growth in the next few years. With this growth comes the need for continued investment in the operating capacity of the organization, particularly in fundraising, program development, and infrastructure. As the key thought leader of the organization, the Executive Director engages the Board and community stakeholders in developing and delivering on these ambitious goals and initiatives. The Executive Director oversees the entirety of the Team Read program and its partnerships with public schools, libraries, and other community partners. Internally, the Executive Director leads the Team Read staff and oversees all aspects of running an effective and efficient organization. Externally, the Executive Director is responsible for developing and maintaining positive partnerships that benefit program participants and the organization as a whole, and complying with partnership agreements and contracts designed to deliver a highquality program. The Executive Director serves as the face of the organization and is Team Read s most visible champion and spokesperson. In that role s/he is responsible for leading fundraising efforts including major donor cultivation, supporting Board members in being ambassadors and fundraisers, participating in special events, and developing relationships with the philanthropic and business community that lead to broad community engagement. Overseeing strategic communications and brand management during this period of expansion are primary responsibilities of the Executive Director.
4 Ideal Candidate Qualifications The ideal candidate for Team Read will be an experienced and entrepreneurial leader with a genuine commitment to equity in education and a passion to meet the needs of underserved youth. Based on its strategic goals for the years ahead, Team Read is seeking an individual who has specific experience and a proven track record of success in the following three areas: Scaling and growing an organization to significantly expand programs and services Confident and effective fundraising, including individuals and major gifts as well as foundations and grants Navigating large public systems (such as school districts) for productive partnerships In addition to these critical skills, successful candidates must demonstrate excellence in organizational management and an unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality, datadriven programs. They should have experience developing and managing high-performing staff teams, and cultivating and working effectively with governing boards. Excellent relationship building skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people are key requirements. As Team Read continues to expand, the need for an ED who is a passionate and persuasive communicator and who has a sophisticated understanding of brand and communications strategies will become even more pronounced. Executive Director candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior leadership role, including responsibility for overseeing the budget and staff of an organization or substantial program, ideally of $1 million or more. A Bachelor s Degree is required; an MBA, MPA, MNPL or another relevant graduate degree is a plus.
5 COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS COMPENSATION This is a full-time exempt position that reports to the Board of Directors and requires a willingness to work some evenings and weekends. The salary for this position reflects the belief that the program will grow significantly beyond its current size and budget, with the resulting need for a senior leader, experienced fundraiser, and entrepreneur. The expected salary range is K+, depending on a proven track record in these key areas. BENEFITS Team Read offers flexible work hours and very generous paid vacation, personal, and holiday time off (over 6 weeks in the first year, with 3 of those weeks occurring at school break times when the office is closed, and 3 self-scheduled.) Additional benefits include a monthly stipend towards healthcare, mileage reimbursed at the state rate, and a monthly contribution toward cell phone fees. The Team Read office is located at the Seattle Public School District (SPS) headquarters, in the SoDo neighborhood of Seattle in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
