2 OUR MISSION The Toronto Catholic District School Board is an inclusive learning community rooted in the love of Christ. We strive to foster student achievement and well-being by providing all students with safe, healthy learning environment. One of the ways we can achieve this goal is by using a whole-school approach to develop and nurture a positive school climate. The Safe Schools Action Team will consist of a variety of stakeholders in each school community responsible for advising the principal about school safety. The team will collaborate with the principal to create the local. Each Safe School Plan will consist of the following components: 1. Bullying Awareness, Intervention and Prevention 2. Progressive Discipline 3. Promoting a Positive School Climate 4. Emergency Response Plan In order for all students, staff members and parents/visitors in the school facility to be prepared to respond to a serious threat, the response procedures must be practiced. The Toronto Police/School Board Protocol, 2011 requires a minimum of 2 Lockdown Drills every school year. Please see below for the scheduled drills: LOCKDOWN DRILLS Page 2 of 14 Printed: :15

3 1. Bullying Awareness, Intervention and Prevention Plan Providing students with an opportunity to learn and develop in a safe and respectful society is a key goal of the TCDSB. Providing students with an opportunity to learn and develop in a safe and respectful environment supports academic achievement for all students, which in turn, helps them to reach their full potential. Research and experience show that bullying is a serious issue that has far-reaching consequences for individuals, their families and peers and the entire school community. Schools that have bullying intervention and prevention strategies foster a positive learning and teaching environment that supports academic achievement for all students and that helps students reach their full potential. PPM 144 School Vision To ensure all students are respected, valued and accepted in a safe and inclusive environment. Goal #1 To increase student, staff and parent awareness around Bullying and to implement activities and learning around Anti-Bullying. Initiatives/Strategies/Practices Building Assets through the Assets mentorship program using intermediate students as mentors for junior students. Internet Safety Training Activity clubs to interest students (get students involved in school life) PALS for Junior leaders to involve primary students in recess games Licensed to Learn Mentor and Mentee program Providing safe ways for students to report concerns (talking to a caring staff member, social work support, guidance councilor, student council) Peer Mediators in the school to assist with conflict resolution Progressive Discipline Approach/Hands off Policy Student Council to raise awareness about using student voice to express any concerns (announcements and assemblies) Ensure doors are locked and all staff are provided with a security swipe card and parents are using school monitor to enter the school and report to the office for visitor pass. Uniform school so students are easily identified Attend Anti-Bully Symposium with staff, student representatives and a parent (raise awareness and collect preventative measures Door monitors (students to ensure students are entering and exiting the school safely during recess) Police Presentations (building relationships and learning preventative measures) Internet Safety presentations to parents, staff and students Staff to be in-serviced on Mediation Circles and strategies so issues can be resolved using Restorative Practice Initiatives. 4 Resources The following resources will be utilized to support these initiatives/strategies/practices: Asset Mentors: Material provided from the Search Institute Peer Mediators: conflict resolution skills and tracking templates used to communicate student needs and teacher follow up Activity Clubs: staff to run programs, student volunteers and participants, funds to assist the clubs development and sustainability PALS: Ultimate Playground and DPA Activity Bins per class, student training Licensed to Learn: Mentors Uniforms for students Guidance councilor Student CYW Measurement of Progress The following metrics will be used to measure progress in achieving the Goal: Preventative measures will result in less reported conflicts from the school yard Students, staff and parents feel happy about coming to school More student concerns reported and addressed before they escalate/more preventative measures implemented to respond to needs of school More parents, staff and students discussing school safety More staff completing progressive discipline reports and students receiving mediation Assets Mentorship program will use the DAP survey completed in June 2015 to measure progress Page 4 of 14 Printed: :15

Goal #2 To implement activities and resources into the school culture so that all students feel safe and can identify a caring person in the school that they can share their thoughts and feelings. Initiatives/Strategies/Practices - CYW student support - individually and group sessions - PALS - Outdoor games led by Junior students for primary students that teach inclusion and acceptance - Assets - Mentorship program that is led by the intermediate students for the Junior students - Rosary Day: we gather as a school community to pray the rosary (Faith Group). - Leadership opportunities for intermediate students through student council, ECSLIT, ilite and Camp O. - Classroom lessons that teach strategies. Feedback from teachers and staff on the success of bullying prevention measures. Progressive Discipline Plan Progressive discipline is a whole-school approach that utilizes a continuum of interventions, supports, and consequences to address inappropriate student behaviour and to build upon strategies that promote positive student behaviours. When inappropriate behaviour occurs, disciplinary measures should be applied within a framework that shifts the focus from one that is solely punitive to one that is both corrective and supportive. Schools should utilize a range of interventions, supports and consequences that include learning opportunities focused on reinforcing positive behaviour and helping students make good choices. PPM 145 School Vision To promote positive student behaviour resulting in students who consistently make good choices. Goal #1 To reduce discipline issues by actively engaging students in a variety of activities, sports, committees and clubs and providing opportunities for mediation. Initiatives/Strategies/Practices Activity clubs to interest students at a variety of levels. Building Assets through the Assets mentorship program using intermediate students as mentors for junior students. PALS for Junior leaders to involve primary students in recess games Staff to be in-serviced on Mediation Circles and strategies so issues can be resolved using Restorative Practice Initiatives. 8 Measurement of Progress The following metrics will be used to measure progress in achieving the Goal: Less behavioural concerns reported by staff and students or witnessed More support provided to victim, perpetrator and bystanders More students involved in committees, clubs, sports and activities Increased number of students reporting concerning behaviours whereby staff are able to respond (preventative measures) Mediation strategies are used to resolve issues/concerns when they arise Page 8 of 14 Printed: :15

9 3. Positive School Climate A school should be a place that promotes responsibility, respect, civility and academic excellence in a safe learning and teaching environment. A positive school climate exists when all members of the school community feel safe, comfortable and accepted. The Safe School Action Team and student leadership groups can play key roles in supporting learning and practices that educate students and staff members about safety concerns. Those practices used for very challenging situations that can jeopardize the safety and well being of others include, but not limited to: Threat Assessment, Restorative Conference and Mediation Circles. School Vision To promote a safe learning and teaching climate where students and staff are valued and are contributing members of the school organization. Goal #1 To increase leadership opportunities for staff and students to promote awareness and to promote a healthy active school. Initiatives/Strategies/Practices Students will have the opportunities to engage in such leadership programs as: ECSLIT, Ottawa Trip,7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens training, Justice League, Student Council, Licensed to Learn Daily physical activity (DPA) will be in place on a regular basis Entire school has been put in Asset groups with intermediate mentors and PALS leaders to foster community. Students will be engaged in sporting activities at various levels (competitive and house league) Eating healthy and being active initiatives will be promoted throughout the year To engage the student council in planning of additional clubs To provide fund raising opportunities to assist those in need To celebrate successes and displays of the Monthly virtues and Random Acts of Kindness The morning meal program has been put in place to provide the entire student body with a healthy snack to promote healthy living, well being and help with focus in the classroom. 13 4. Emergency Response Plan The Toronto Catholic District School Board has a primary responsibility to ensure the safety of students and staff inside Board buildings and on Board property. Central policies and procedures, developed in collaboration with the Toronto Police Service, provide direct support to school administrators in the management of crisis situations, including a lockdown response. It is the responsibility of each school to develop local procedures specific to that school, including a process by which all regular staff members, itinerant and specialist teachers and support staff, facility workers and visitors are informed of local considerations in the event of a threat to school safety. MOE Provincial Model for a Local Police/School Board Protocol School Vision All students, staff members and visitors will become knowledgeable about emergency procedures for threats to the safety and well-being of all persons at school, and will be able to appropriately respond according to the guidelines established by TCDSB. Goal #1 To plan, practice and evaluate a minimum of 2 Lockdown Drills in this school year; one drill per term.
