1 First Grade Summer Reading List All first grade students at Berean Christian School will be expected to complete a summer reading assignment. Berean Christian School feels that summer time is a valuable time for students to develop an interest in reading and writing through guided practice. One goal of Berean Christian School s summer reading program is to encourage students to prepare for the upcoming school year by reading two books over the summer. Each grade level has one required book and one student chosen book from a provided selection. HAPPY READING! Your First Grade Teacher Please follow the guidelines as indicated below for completion of the Summer Reading Assignment requirements: I. Required Book Assignment: The required book will be evaluated in two ways - Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey Students will write one sentence about the main character, one sentence about the setting, and two sentences about their favorite part of this book (Please use the attached Summer Reading Response Sheet). A follow up evaluation in the form of an objective quiz/activity and/or class discussion will be given on Friday, August 12, See Grade Scoring Guide. II. Chosen Book (based on list provided below Choose one): 1. Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman 2. Big Dog, Little Dog by P.D. Eastman 3. Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell 4. 2 In regard to the chosen book, students will read the book and parents will sign a provided acknowledgment form indicating completion of this part of the Summer Reading Assignment requirements. This Parental Acknowledgment Form will be due on Friday, August 12, Dear Parent(s): Please allow this to be an original piece by your child. 3 Elementary K-5 thru 6 th Grade Scoring Guide Students will be assessed for the writing portion of the Summer Reading Assignment based on the following areas/criteria: Ideas and Content: Is the main idea clear, focused, and interesting? Are there supporting details from the story to back up the writer s thoughts? Organization: Does the writing show a topic sentence with a concluding sentence as well? Conventions: Does the writer use grade level appropriate spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar? Students will receive: Score of 5 on each area listed above that is strong Score of 4 on each area listed above that is proficient Score of 3 on each area listed above that is developing Score of 2 on each area listed above that is emerging Score of 1 on each area listed above that is at a beginning level Please note: Teachers will be using this guide as a diagnostic tool in order to assess individual student s writing abilities at the beginning of the school year.
