Parents and Students, The era of Pathways is in full swing! Our freshman class began with CCHS s first-ever two-day orientation, and the journey toward self-discovery and career exploration is ongoing in your student s English class. In November, we will host four Pathways Days where freshmen will join community members to discuss a day-in-the-life of numerous careers. Soon, all freshmen will receive accounts in the Naviance system allowing them to build their resumes toward college and career. At the high school level, state testing this year will align under one testing company College Board. This means that freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will all take a graduated version of the SAT. Most exciting, they will also receive a free Khan Academy account linking their test score with study programs to help them improve their scores as they move toward the college entry exam the junior/senior level SAT. The Class 0f 2018 graduation ceremony is set for Thursday, 24 May at 6:30 pm. Last year s ceremony was a success in that we enjoyed comfortable temperatures and a more streamlined event. 2 Page 2 Administration News Our seniors are currently experiencing the schools internship program led by Lisa Tedesko and Lori Coppa. Twenty-five seniors are in the community learning trades from physical therapy to dentistry to veterinarian medicine to banking. I would like to commend the employers who have risen to the challenge of hosting our interns. The CCHS drop-off and pick-up scheme changed last week to move the bus routes to the west side of the campus, allowing parents to drop student immediately in front of the school in the old bus lane. For the most part, this has improved drop-off times and student safety. I encourage all parents to proceed with caution anytime you drop your student off, and I discourage dropping students off in any fashion that forces them to cross the street to reach the campus. Further, it is now a traffic violation to turn left from the school bus lane onto College Avenue. Thank you for your support. Thank you everyone! 3 Page 3 Parent News When you call the attendance line PLEASE SPELL YOUR STUDENT S FIRST AND LAST NAME ext. 2or 9 When reporting a partial day absence, please state the time when the student will be out of school NOT THE BLOCKS, for example, 9:00 am to 10:00 am NOT 2 ND AND 3 RD BLOCKS. We have various schedules for different days. If a student will miss part of a school day, please have the student deliver a parent s note to the attendance office before school begins or call a few hours ahead on the day of (or day prior to) the appointment. This way, students will be ready to leave on time and will have a permit to leave class and the building. Parents cannot expect students to be ready to leave in a timely manner if no advance warning is given. Please make every effort to refrain from picking up your student from 2:40 to 3:00 pm. This office is inundated with calls and activity at this time. Thank you. This information can be found on the parent portal under the fees tab. If you feel that the fee/fine is in error or has already been paid, please contact us. Please DO NOT ignore this statement as student fines and fees must be paid in full prior to graduation in order for your student to receive their diploma.

5 Page 5 School News ACCOUNTABILITY Our Accountability Committee meets once a month in the high school library at 6:30 p.m. with meetings usually lasting about an hour. We are comprised of parents, community members, faculty, staff, students and administration whose common goal is improving the high school experience for all of our students. PLEASE JOIN US! For more information, contact Sara Marietta at Upcoming meeting dates are: Oct. 11 th and Nov. 8 th TASK FORCE WORK DAYS October 11 th and November 8 th *Dates subject to change. (The second Wednesday of each month) The Fremont RE-1 Board of Education has agreed to allow days during the school year for the high school staff to work together as a staff. This time will be spent on Progressive Educational Initiatives such as those recommended by the Secondary Task Force and several other committees that have student needs for the 21st Century as their focus. CCHS is closed until 9:00 a.m. when the commons opens. At this time, students may purchase breakfast. PLEASE REFER TO THE WEBSITE FOR ALL BELL SCHEDULES Buy Your Yearbook NOW! You know you want one! If you want to purchase a yearbook, the deadline is Christmas break. Use the website or bring $65 to Mrs. Lyons in Room 101. Payment plans are available! See Mrs. Lyons for details. SENIORS: Senior yearbook photos are due before Christmas break as well. Head and shoulder shots only. Pictures taken with your phone are not acceptable. Also, senior tribute ads are available. 7 Page 7 September Gifted Education Fact #1 It is widely acknowledged that giftedness is an inherent attribute. Although a few believe giftedness can be achieved through nurturing, the overwhelming consensus is that giftedness is present at birth, an inherited trait. Chances are very high that one or both parents of a gifted child, as well as siblings, are also gifted. Approximately 2% of the population is said to be gifted regardless of race, culture or socioeconomic status. It is a neurodiversity, which does not discriminate. October Gifted Education Fact #2 Gifted children do not always excel in school. Being gifted is no guarantee of success in school or later in life. For many various reasons, a gifted child will not always score well on tests, ace every assignment or turn in his homework. Despite having above-average cognitive abilities, if a gifted child s educational needs are not met appropriately, he may not show exceptional achievement in school. Many gifted children underachieve in school and often drop out. November Gifted Education Fact #3 Gifted children can and do have learning disabilities. As with any child, a gifted child may have learning disabilities which can negatively influence their achievement in school. Unfortunately, gifted children with learning disabilities, also referred to as twice -exceptional, often go unidentified because their advanced cognitive abilities often mask their learning disabilities. It is common that neither the giftedness nor the learning disability are recognized or addressed in school.
