1 School Rules: Be Safe RULES, PROCEDURES, AND POLICIES JENNIE P. STEWART ELEMENTARY Being safe means to be free from harm or risk. Everyone deserves to be safe at school. Stellar Stewart Stars are safe and help to keep others safe too. Be Responsible Being responsible means, taking ownership of your words and behavior and accepting outcomes of decisions made because of your behavior. Be on time and stay the day. Stellar Stewart Stars are responsible. Be Respectful Being respectful means to be considerate of others feelings and property, being good listeners, treating others the way you want to be treated, respecting the learning of others, and acknowledging others ideas. Stellar Stewart Stars are respectful and kind. Be Successful Being successful means to have achieved a favorable outcome. Arriving on time each day, being present for daily classroom instruction, actively participating in learning, completing assignments, and staying the entire school day. Stellar Stewart Stars are successful. School Procedures: Before School Safety Procedures Cross the street using crosswalks. Be on time for school, and stay the day. Line up at your assigned place. If it is a bad weather day, please go into the gym, and wait until the bell rings to go to your class. Keep your hands and personal belongings to self. Treat people, places and things respectfully. Wait for teachers to greet and lead students to class on time. If you are late for school, a parent must come with you to sign you in. Hallway Procedures Walk quietly in the hallway and other common areas. Keep your hands, feet and objects to self. Follow directions. Go directly where you are supposed to go. Use a soft voice. When with your class, walk single file.

2 Drinking Fountain Procedures Walk directly to and from the drinking fountain following hallway procedures. Stand respectfully in a single line. Quickly take your turn. Go directly to where you are supposed to go. Playground Procedures Be in control of yourself and property. Be kind to others on the playground. Help others participate. Play fair. Line up with your class when the bell rings. Be on time. Assembly Procedures Follow hallway procedures to and from an assembly. Carry your chair properly. Enter and exit quietly. Be respectful by sitting forward and quietly listening keeping your hands and feet to yourself. Use appropriate responses. Restroom Procedures Walk quietly in the hallways using the hallway procedures. Be in control of self and property. Please do not play in the restroom. Use the restroom. Clean up after yourself. Wash and dry your hands. Immediately walk quietly back to your class using hallway procedures. Lunchroom Procedures Walk quietly in the hallways using the hallway procedures. Be in control of self and property. Please do not play in the restroom. Use the restroom. Clean up after yourself. Wash and dry your hands. Immediately walk quietly back to your class using hallway procedures. After School Procedures Stay at school the entire day. Students must leave when school is out, and exit through the assigned doors. Students may not play in the halls after school. Students may meet friends and family outside at a prearranged spot. Phones may be used outside of the building after school.

3 School Policies: Appropriate Dress The Davis County School Board emphasizes the importance of school, parent, and student collaboration in encouraging students to come to school dressed appropriately, clean, and modest for school work. We suggest our students measure the top of their shoulders with three fingers to determine whether their shirts are appropriate for school. Shirts with spaghetti-straps, mini-skirts, shirts that expose the midriff, spandex shorts, heavy chains or baggy pants that hang below the waist are not permitted. Short pants and skirts must be at least fingertip length. Clothing associated with gangs or which displays crude or inappropriate words or pictures shall not be worn. References to products that are illegal are not to be worn. Hats and/or bandanas may not be worn in the building. Flip flops, platforms, wheelies, or other shoes that make it difficult for students to engage in vigorous play and P.E. are not allowed for safety purposes. Students with exaggerated piercings, cosmetics, and body paint will not be allowed at school. Students with exaggerated hair styles or unnatural hair color are not allowed. Students who violate the dress code will be asked to call their parents to bring them appropriate clothing. Attendance We have adopted the theme: Be on Time, and Stay the Day. Students need to attend school every day/all day. The process of education requires continuity of instruction, and being late for school interrupts this process. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year. Regular attendance is important to academic success. Students, who are well, belong at school. Students, who are sick, belong at home. Students, who are at school, are assumed to be well enough to participate in outdoor recess, barring unusual medical conditions. Keeping students home for reasons other than illness gives the message that school is not acceptable. Bikes, Scooter, and Skateboards To avoid injury to others, riding bikes, scooters and skateboards is prohibited on school grounds including the catwalk west of the school. These items should be walked or carried on school grounds and locked to the bike racks or folded in backpacks during school hours. The school is not responsible for loss of personal property. Bullying and Hazing A student is being bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more students. Jennie P. Stewart Elementary Bully-Free Pledge: We will not bully others! We will try to help students who are being bullied. We will include students who are easily left out. When we know somebody is being bullied, we will tell and adult at school or at home. Tattling is getting someone in trouble. Reporting is helping someone out of trouble.

4 Bussing for Fieldtrips Students are expected to conform to all bus regulations and respect the bus driver. For safety, if a child is unable to exert appropriate self-control, bus privileges may be withdrawn for some or all activities. If a student loses bussing privileges, parents will be responsible for the transportation of their student. Electronic Device Policy Electronic devices have the potential of disrupting the orderly operation of the school for elementary students. Through DSD, Jennie P. Stewart has created a policy of NO use of electronic devices on school premises, during school hours, at school sponsored activities, and on school busses during field trips (unless permission is given by the classroom teacher). Students may use electronic devices before school begins and after the final bell of the school day, outside of the school building, so long as they do not create a distraction or disruption. Distracting behavior that creates an unsafe environment will not be tolerated. Students may not take photos of others without their permission and may not post or threaten to post photos online. School personnel may confiscate items which have the potential to become a disruption. Confiscated items will not be returned to students, but may be returned to parents through the principal s office. Telephone Use and Messages: If students need to use a telephone, we are happy to let them use the office phone with a phone pass from their teachers. Telephone calls for assignments, books, and lunches left at home are discouraged, but allowed as determined by the classroom teacher. Students may not use the phone to make after-school play arrangements, so please plan ahead to reduce confusion. Support of this policy will help us keep the limited number of phone lines available for school related issues and emergencies, and will help students develop responsibility. Cell phone use is NOT allowed during school time, including lunch and recess. Cell phones must remain off and kept away in backpacks, etc. Grades For many assignments and assessments, teachers use a rubric similar to the following chart: 3 Meets or Exceeds Demonstrates mastery of information and/or processes taught or the Standard demonstrates in depth inferences and applications beyond what was taught. 2 Below Standard Demonstrates an understanding of some details and processes with help. 1 Far Below Does not meet grade level expectation of what students should know and be able to do with help. Homework Students at Stewart Elementary can be expected to be assigned approximately ten minutes of homework each night per grade in school, in addition to time spent reading. Thus, a first grader would spend about ten minutes on homework, while a sixth grader would be assigned approximately an hour of homework and an additional period of time reading. Students attending the Chinese Immersion program may have more homework than stated above. Keyboarding Stewart Elementary gives students, from second to sixth-grade, the opportunity to learn keyboarding skills in an intensive four week program. To be successful, students must practice at home during this time and must continue practicing using correct fingering in order to build speed

5 and accuracy. Careful keyboarding practice at home is vital in keyboarding and may affect grades depending on their grade-level requirements. Poor Choices and Consequences (Minor & Major) Minor - Think Time: We are committed to quality education for all students. All students deserve a positive educational experience for academic and social growth. Each teacher has developed well-defined classroom rules & procedures which were developed to promote a safe, nurturing classroom environment conducive to learning. To create such an environment, educators teach, encourage, coach, and reinforce appropriate behaviors to help students follow the classroom rules and procedures. As a school, we use a researched based discipline technique called Think Time to create a positive classroom environment whenever any student exhibits a behavior that is disruptive to the class. The technique emphasizes the importance of students taking responsibility for their own behavior. Think Time has two parts. The first part is designed to allow students to focus and gain self-control by asking them to move to another classroom for a short period of time to calm down and think about their behavior. The second part involves providing the student with feedback about their behavior and an opportunity for him or her to plan for future success in the classroom. If a student is directed to Think Time four or more times, he/she will receive an office disciplinary referral, and you will be notified. Additionally, we will ask for your assistance if problems persist or if a problem is unusually challenging. Major & Safe School Violation: Students are responsible for any disorderly conduct that my affect the school climate, classroom instruction, or student and staff welfare and safety. As per DSD mandate, we are required to implement a policy for Student Conduct & Discipline. We will not tolerate fighting, disrespect, obscene language or gestures, harassment (verbal, physical, sexual), weapons (pretend or real), or destruction of property. Students are expected to show respect for school property (technology, books, school materials, etc.). Students may be held responsible for property which they damage or deface. Most discipline will be handled in the classroom by the classroom teacher. However, a student s behavior may result in an office disciplinary referral. The school administration will investigate the situation to determine the appropriate intervention. The following corrective actions may be taken: Loss of privileges or preferred activities, contact or conference with parents, in-school or out-of school suspensions, and/or contact police. If a child s behavior is egregious or repetitive, as per DSD policy, a referral to DSD s Case Management team may be deemed necessary. The DSD Case Management team will review the case and make recommendations. The DSD Case Management Team may require and evaluation by district personnel. A student may or may not be excluded from school until the DSD Case Management Team requirements have been met. In class, we demonstrate and expect students to demonstrate: Mutual Respect, Attentive Listening, Appreciation, and Personal Best. School Arrival Time Since there is no playground supervision provided before and after school, students should arrive at the building only 10 minutes prior to school beginning, and return home promptly after school. However, students are expected to arrive on time each day (8:45). Upon arriving at school,

6 students are not to play in the school parking lot, or loading areas for safety reasons. When the bell rings students should line up at their designated door. The teacher will meet the students and escort them to class. School Property Students are responsible for the appropriate use of school books, materials, and supplies, including computers, ipads, calculators, earphones, and other school equipment and devices. Students will be expected to pay for damages that are beyond normal wear-and-tear and for lost or destroyed materials. Writing in books is not permitted. We take great pride in our property and others property at Jennie P. Stewart Elementary. If a student is negligent and destroys or breaks school property, including ipads, headphones, computers, etc., parents will be responsible to purchase and replace items. A Student Technology Acceptable Use Agreement must be signed by every student and parent before a student is allowed to use any school technology. Students must take care of the school s technology devices and follow teachers instructions for use. Not following teachers instructions may result in loss of technology privileges. Vandalism of any kind is against the law and should be reported immediately. Stormy Weather We do not insist that students go outside at recess time during excessively wet, windy, freezing, or red-burn days. We follow the State of Utah Guidelines for Asthma. However, on a normal day, students are expected to go outside for recess and to have adequate outer clothing, jackets, gloves, etc. to be comfortable. On an indoor day, all children will stay indoors due to weather conditions. For current weather information at Stewart Elementary, you can download the Weather Bug app for ios or Android. This information is received from the Weather Bug station installed at Stewart Elementary. Tardiness Our policy is Be on Time and Stay the Day. Our bell rings at 8:45. We feel that it is imperative that every student arrives on time. This helps to set a routine of responsibility that can only benefit student success in school. Tardiness not only interrupts the individual student s education, but the education of everyone in the class. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the school year. Students who are chronically late develop the impression that school is not important and are often at-risk to drop out of high school. Parents must accompany their late children into the office to sign-in. Parents will be notified by teachers and/or school administration if students are chronically tardy or absent. Please make an effort to be on-time for school each day. Toys, Games, Candy, etc. Toys, games, sports equipment, candy, etc. should be left at home. The school is not responsible for loss or damage to personal property. Clothes, backpacks, and other personal belongings should be clearly labeled. Please check the Lost and Found regularly for missing personal items. School personnel may confiscate items which have the potential to become a disruption. Confiscated items will not be returned to students, but may be returned to parents through the principal s office.
