4 4 Bay View Students and Families, Bay View Middle School STRIDE GUIDE STRIDE was developed by the staff at Bay View Middle School as: 1) a school-wide Advisor/Advisee Program; and 2) a school-wide Student Management Program for students to foster responsibility and safe behavior by teaching accountability and responsibility for poor decisions. It is also a system of support and recognition for positive behavioral and academic accomplishments. We believe our students will grow and mature by learning from both their successes and failures. We expect our students to both achieve and make mistakes. Mistakes are opportunities to learn and continue to grow. It takes students, parents, staff, and administration TOGETHER, to make STRIDE work. You are asked to review this Guide with your son/daughter. Let us commit to one another the communication and mutual support students need to succeed. 5 5 Bay View Middle School STRIDE GUIDE Students come to Bay View Middle School to learn. We at Bay View believe students learn best in a positive, safe, and orderly environment. Students need to feel safe both physically and emotionally. The goal of STRIDE is to promote this vital learning environment. STRIDE GOALS 1. Give students guidance and support through a STRIDE Advocate (Advisor), daily STRIDE Time, and provide timely communication with parents. 2. Promote physical and emotional safety in our school and on school grounds. 3. Teach students to be responsible and accountable for their actions. 4. Recognize positive, safe behavior in students. 5. Ensure that all students, staff, parents, and visitors at Bay View are treated with respect and courtesy. 6. Provide a positive atmosphere of order and accountability where each student can reach his/her potential. Advisor/Advisee Program STRIDE Time At Bay View we have a well-developed Advisor/Advisee program whereby each student has a STRIDE Advocate (Advisor) who is there to give guidance, advice, and someone the student and parents can go to when there is a problem or concern regarding school. Each STRIDE Advocate has a STRIDE Group of approximately fifteen students whom they watch over, guide, and work with on a daily basis. Getting each day off to a good start is important for everyone. Approximately twenty minutes daily, at the start of every school day, is designated as STRIDE Time. The Advocate will spend this time with his/her Advisees to monitor student behavior (i.e. credits, debits, lates, etc.) and to provide students with assistance in academics, peer relationships, decision-making, and problem solving. STRIDE Time is a time and place where students will feel a sense of belonging and guidance. It is also a time to get organized and warmed up for the day. The Advisor/Advisee program is the foundation of STRIDE.

6 6 General School Expectations At Bay View Middle School we have three General Expectations under which all other rules fall. These include: Be Safe: Actions must be physically and emotionally safe for oneself and others. Be Respectful: Treat yourself, all others, and your school with respect. Be Responsible: Understand that you are ultimately responsible for your learning, decisions, and actions. STRIDE DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES Safe, Respectful, and Responsible are expectations that allow school to be a pleasant place to learn and grow. Students are responsible that their actions are safe and respectful toward others whether in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, bathroom, playground, school activity, etc. Students who struggle to fulfill these expectations will be given the opportunity, through a philosophy of Progressive Discipline, to learn and grow from their mistakes/actions. The term discipline comes from the Latin word Discipulus meaning student ; coming from the verb Discere meaning to learn. Bay View Middle School does not equate discipline with punishment, but acknowledges that students will make mistakes, and views the entire process as a part of learning and growing. When actions repeat and/or intensify, Bay View will follow thefollowing general progression: 1. Verbal warning of inappropriate behavior and explanation of why the action was unacceptable. (We give students many verbal warnings.) 2. Issued Debit(s) (written warning) for minor rule infractions and explanation of why the action was unacceptable. 3. Removed from the area, conference with teacher, phone call home. 4. Office Referral (written report) for chronic and/or more severe behaviors. 5. Intervention by Bay View Administration. **Parent involvement and communication is critical throughout this entire progression**

7 7 Methods of Monitoring Student Behavior Ways we keep track of positive and negative student behaviors DEBITS - Debits are written warnings given when a student s behavior choices violate minor school rules. Typically given outside the classroom, a debit does not directly result in a consequence, rather it records the minor rule violation. The accumulation of multiple debits (i.e. Earning a Step ; see Debit Character Log in STRIDE App) will earn progressive consequences. Debits earned do not carry over from quarter to quarter. The following are several examples of unacceptable minor rule violations that will result in the earning of debit(s): Minor loud, unruly conduct in halls Throwing an object Eating outside the cafeteria Chewing Gum Tardy to class Minor disrespectful behavior Minor unsafe conduct in halls, bus lines, etc. [**Please note this is not an all inclusive list**] Multiple Debits - Depending on the severity of the incident, any of the above actions may warrant more than one debit being issued. The following actions will automatically earn multiple debits: 1. Misconduct with a substitute teacher 2. Misconduct before or after school, at noon, or near the buses UNPREPARED FOR CLASS - An unprepared is issued to a student who comes to class without the required materials (i.e. ipad, books, notebooks, pens, pencils, etc.). It is important to remember that the unprepared mark is a warning and the student has the opportunity to correct the behavior going forward. Progressively, students will earn a debit after they have earned 3 unprepareds. **Please note that if a student does not have his/her homework assignment, it is considered a late assignment and NOT an unprepared.** NOW OR NOON - Now or Noon is an academic intervention for students to assist them with assignment completion. Any student who fails to turn in an assignment in a morning class (i.e. earns a late ) will be assigned to Now or Noon. Any student who fails to turn in an assignment in an afternoon class, will be assigned to a Now or Noon the following day during lunch. Now or Noon is conducted during every lunch hour. Students are to bring their lunch and their academic materials to a designated classroom (normally supervised by at least one of their core House teachers) to complete their missing assignment(s). Students will remain on the Now or Noon list until all late work is completed. Students who have earned/are assigned to Now or Noon are required to attend Now or Noon (like any other class on their schedule) and are expected to work while in Now or Noon. Failure to attend or work may result in earning a debit(s), parent contact, and/or an office referral.

8 8 Methods of Monitoring Student Behavior Ways we keep track of positive and negative student behaviors CREDITS - Credits are recorded acknowledgments when a student exhibits exemplary behavior. Credits do not cancel out debits, however the accumulation of multiple credits (see Credit Character Log in STRIDE App) allows a student to shop at Bay View s Gold Card Store where students can redeem their credits for a variety of privileges or rewards. The following are several examples of behavior which would be credit worthy : [**Please note this is not an all inclusive list**] Assisting another student or teacher Demonstrating positive improvement Positively representing him/herself Being extra courteous Being particularly helpful Going beyond the call of duty INCENTIVE OPPORTUNITIES Students who display safe, cooperative, positive behavior have the opportunity to earn Incentive Time each mid-quarter and at the end of each quarter. Incentive Time gives students special time during school to be and interact with their peers and teachers in less structured activities that provide for continued emotional and social growth. Students need to earn Incentive Time. They do NOT begin the quarter having it and then losing it. ELIGIBILITY FOR INCENTIVES/DANCES Eligibility for Mid-Quarter Incentive Time (MQIT) 1. Less than 6 Lates (step 3) earned in the incentive period 2. No Office Referrals in the incentive period 3. No earned Detention or MASH in the incentive period 4. No Office Referrals resulting in an in-school or out-of-school suspension(s) Eligibility for Quarterly Incentive Time (QIT) 1. Less than 9 Debits (step 3) earned in the quarter 2. Less than 9 Lates (step 3) earned in the quarter 3. Less than 2 Office Referrals in the quarter 4. No Office Referrals resulting in an in-school or out-of-school suspension(s) Eligibility for Dances 1. Less than 9 Debits or 9 Lates (step 3) 2. Less than 2 Office Referrals 3. No Office Referrals resulting in an in-school or out-of-school suspension(s) 4. Good Attendance Records (i.e. No truancy citations, habitual attendance issues, etc.) 5. No currently applied Behavioral Contract/Abeyance of Expulsion Order

9 9 Office Referrals Office Referrals are a more serious part of our school-wide student management system. Office Referrals are utilized when either previous efforts to correct behavioral choices are not working or when the behavior/situation is serious enough that it requires direct involvement of Bay View Administration and/or our School Resource Officer. Earning office referrals can produce school level consequences (i.e. MASH, Detention, etc.), disqualification from incentives and/or lead to additional measures taken by Bay View Administration. Academic Referrals - Academic Referrals are earned when a student has had chronic and pervasive issues with turning his/her work in on time. Academic Referrals are issued after individual House Late Work Policies and our Now or Noon offerings have all been applied and have shown the need for additional interventions is required. Within a quarter, a student will earn an Academic Referral after accumulating 3 late or missing assignments. When a student earns an Academic Referral, there will be a conference with the STRIDE Advocate, parents will be contacted, and the student will be assigned to a MASH (Mandatory After School Homework). Additional Academic Referrals will result in disqualification from MQIT/QIT, creating a Success Contract, parent meeting, etc. Earning multiple Academic Referrals will result with the student meeting with their School Counselor and/or School Administration to develop a more specific intervention plan to improve the student s academic performance. Behavioral Referrals - Behavior Referrals are earned when a student has had repeated violations of minor school rules resulting in the accumulation of multiple debits. Within a quarter, a student will earn a Behavior Referral after every time he/she has accumulated 3 debits. When a student earns a Behavior Referral there will be a conference with the STRIDE Advocate, parents will be contacted, and the student will be assigned a progression of school consequences including lunch detention, being disqualified from MQIT/QIT, after school detention, creating a Success Contract, parent meeting, loss of lunchroom privileges, permanent lunch and/or after school detention, etc. Earning multiple Behavioral Referrals will result with the student meeting with their School Counselor and/or School Administration to develop a more specific intervention plan to improve the student's behavior. Office Referrals - Office Referrals are earned in two ways; (1) after multiple/chronic academic and/or behavioral referrals have been earned; (2) for chronic, serious school behavior rule violation that need to be referred directly to Bay View Administration and/or our School Resource Officer. Examples include: Disrespect to Others, Fighting/Unsafe Physical Contact, Vandalism, Improper Language/Profanity, Stealing, Sexual, Physical, or Verbal Harassment/Threat/Intimidation, Cheating, Misuse of School Property, Skipping Class/ Assigned Responsibilities, Possession/Use of Cell Phone/Other Device During School Hours, Possession of Tobacco, Alcohol, Inappropriate Materials/Items, etc. [**Please note this is not an all inclusive list**]

10 10 Possible Consequences for Office Referrals Depending on the severity of the situation a student s history with behavior issues, and operating under the principles of the Progressive Discipline philosophy, Bay View Administration may choose one or several of the following consequences for earning an office referral - Parent Notification, Lunch and/or After School Detention(s), Peer Mediation, MASH (Mandatory After School Homework), WASH (Weekend Assigned School Homework), Learning Experience (Service, Apology Letter), Loss of Lunchroom Privileges, Loss of Co-Curricular Privileges, Police Intervention (meeting, citation, etc.), In-School Suspension (1-3 days), Out-of-School Suspension (1-5 days), Expulsion, etc. [**Please note this is not an all inclusive list**] Cheating/Academic Dishonesty - Since the primary purpose of school is learning, Bay View Middle School takes any attempt at cheating/academic dishonesty very seriously. Students who engage in cheating/academic dishonesty or plagiarism will be subject to consequences that could include detention, reflection papers, in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, loss of privileges, loss of incentives, loss of con-curricular activities and/or eligibility, etc. Bullying/Harassment - Bay View Middle School strictly prohibits bullying or harassment in any form (i.e. words, actions, writings, electronically, etc.). Bullying/Harassment is defined as Repeated acts committed against another that interferes with one s school performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment. Whether physically, verbally or by means of any electronic device or media engages in: Teasing or put downs Taunts or name calling damaging or stealing property of others Physically pushing or attacking Excluding from peers or activities Threats or intimidation Unwanted or unwelcome sexual advances Students who engage in any act of bullying/harassment may be subject to appropriate disciplinary action up to and including suspension, expulsion, and/or referral to law enforcement. Students and parents who are the target of or witness of bullying/harassment are expected to report it to school authorities. In-School Suspension (ISS) - A student will be issued an in-school suspension by Bay View Administration for severe, dangerous, or chronic misconduct or actions that warrant temporary removal from class. The following are some examples of behaviors that can earn an in-school suspension: Fighting Profanity Chronic behavior problems (Progressive Discipline) Bullying/Harassment Noncompliance/Disrespect Possession of tobacco products Vandalism

11 11 If placed on an in-school suspension, the student is allowed to remain in school provided he/she is compliant with ISS procedures. The student is removed from his/her class schedule for the duration of the ISS and will be assigned to an ISS room. The student will complete any given or missing assignments/work in a quiet cooperative, and productive manner. Failure to follow these expectations, will result in an out-of-school suspension. If this occurs, parents will be contacted to pick up their child from school and a parent-student conference with Bay view Administration may be required for the student s return to school. Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) - A student will be issued an out-of-school suspension by Bay View Administration for severe, dangerous, and/or chronic misconduct or actions that warrant temporary removal from school. Out-of-School suspensions can be given up to 5 consecutive days for one incident. Parents will be notified of disciplinary action resulting in an outof-school suspension and will be expected to pick up their child from school. Prior to coming back to school, a parent-student conference with Bay View Administration may be required to establish conditions and requirements for re-entry.
