1 What is DIFFERENT? Elementary Assessment Schedule ~ ) A NEW look: The schedule is organized by date and hopefully see what is coming for the school year. The right column lists the grade level(s) that test a particular assessment. o WHITE = All students in the grade test. o GRAY = Only students needing the assessment are tested. 2) REDUCTION of some tests: DIBELS will only be administered in Fall for all students in grades 2-5. o If the student is not fluent AND is not comprehending based on Fall assessments, the student would be in a fluency and comprehension group. For these students, both fluency and comprehension would be emphasized and monitored until the student becomes more fluent and transitions to vocabulary and comprehension. o If a student shows proficiency on the fall fluency assessment, he/she would not need to test in fluency for mid-year or spring, unless the teacher sees a need. SOL tests were eliminated by the General Assembly and be replaced by alternative local assessments. Elementary SOL tests that were eliminated include: o Grade 3 - History, Science o Grade 5 - Writing 3) Reading (SRI) and Math (SMI) bands: Some bands have been adjusted after reviewing updates in alignment with and correlation with our local SRI and SMI data and SOL results. The reading question band was adjusted for all grades and the end benchmarks for 2nd grade were adjusted. Please refer to the updated Reading and Math benchmarks for a complete list of the new benchmarks.

3 Explanation of Elementary School Assessment Grade(s) Frequency of Assessment Purpose PALS K - 3 Informal Decoding (IDI) DIBELS Fluency Probe Reading (SRI) & Mathematics (SMI) Benchmark Common WIDA ACCESS NAEP(National Assessment of Educational Progress) Standards of Learning Test K - 5 (beginning in Spring of K, grades 1-5, as appropriate) K-5 (Math) 3-5 (Reading) Screening Winter, and Spring, as noted on schedule). Quick checks (Ongoing, as needed) are ongoing assessments that are given periodically.. Winter, Spring - beginning in Winter of 1st grade) The screening provides information in multiple components of literacy, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. It is required by the state and provides information for individual students, classrooms, and grades that may be compared against state benchmarks and averages. It also clearly identifies students in need of early intervention. The quick checks provide formative information about student's progress toward overall goals. They are required in Kindergarten for assessing students' progress in concept of word and are optional in other areas and grades. The IDI assesses students' ability to decode at multiple stages (word recognition/ phonics). This assessment would generally be given Spring of Kindergarten and three times a year in First or Second Grade (for any student who has not previously demonstrated mastery of the phonics stage.) The fluency benchmark test assesses fluency rate against a nationally established norm. This assessment has been found to be predictable of future risk of reading difficulty. The SRI assesses student comprehension of text and provides a student lexile level. The lexile level is important for matching students with texts, particularly for their independent reading The SMI assesses mathematics fact fluency and skill application and provides a quantile level. The lexile and quantile levels may be compared with the grade level benchmark to determine if additional supports or enrichments are needed. These assessments also can be used to determine that the student is making appropriate growth. Benchmark assessments serve as an indicator of students' current level of performance and are a predictor for future performance on assessments. Teachers can use information from these assessments to offer corrective instruction (or re-reaching), as appropriate. In grades 3-5, these assessments are administered through Interactive Achievement. K-5 Throughout the year The process of developing common assessments helps each PLC grow in the specific learning standards needed to be successful in the grade level. These may include performance assessments, written responses, multiple-choice, technology-enhanced, etc. Teachers may use Interactive Achievement to create some of these assessments. K-5 Once a year (Spring) The ACCESS test is given to students identified as ESL, and provides a measure of the student's reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. This measure is used to determine the student's overall level of language proficiency as well as the progress made in language. Grade 4 Based on national sample selection from grade 4 NAEP is the largest representative assessment of what our nation's students know and can do in various subject areas. Results are released as the Nation's Report Card and provide an aggregate picture of student academic progress over time. 3-5 Once a year (Spring) These assessments are required by schools. They provide a summary of the cumulative knowledge students have gained related to the standards. These assessments are used to determine state and federal accountability for the school and the division. NOTE: The list above includes many required summative assessments. However, this list is not exhaustive of all of the assessments that a classroom teacher may administer in order to determine students' understanding of a particular standard or learning goal. Multiple assessments should be used in making decisions regarding students' level of understanding and growth.

5 Explanation of Middle School Assessment Grade(s) Frequency of Assessment Purpose Reading The SRI assesses student comprehension of text and provides a student lexile level. The lexile level is important for matching students with texts, particularly for their independent reading. The lexile level may be compared with the grade level benchmark to determine if additional supports or enrichments are needed. These assessments also can be used to determine that the student is making appropriate growth. Mathematics The SMI assesses mathematics fact fluency and skill application and provides a quantile level. The quantile level may be compared with the grade level benchmark to determine if additional supports or enrichments are needed. These assessments also can be used to determine that the student is making appropriate growth. ARDT(Algebra Readiness Diagnostic Test) Pre-test and Post-test for each course The ARDT is a 30-item, computer-adaptive test (administered through TestNav) that assesses mathematics content mastery for a particular grade level. The results may assist in determining the need for student intervention and in identifying specific content strands needing instructional remediation. Readi-Step Grade 8 Once a year (Fall) ReadiStep measures skills students need to be on track for success as they transition into high school. It provides detailed feedback on students' academic progress in reading, writing, and mathematics and helps guide curriculum development and instruction to improve learning outcomes for students. Benchmark Benchmark assessments serve as an indicator of students' current level of performance and are a predictor for future performance on assessments. Teachers can use information from these assessments to offer corrective instruction (or re-reaching), as appropriate. In Math and Reading, these assessments are administered through Interactive Achievement. Common WIDA ACCESS Throughout the year The process of developing common assessments helps each PLC grow in the specific learning standards needed to be successful in the grade level. These may include performance assessments, written responses, multiple-choice, technology-enhanced, etc. Teachers may use Interactive Achievement to create some of these assessments. Once a year (Spring) The ACCESS test is given to students identified as ESL, and provides a measure of the student's reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. This measure is used to determine the student's overall level of language proficiency as well as the progress made in language. NAEP(National Assessment of Educational Progress) Grade 8 Based on national sample selection from grade 8 NAEP is the largest representative assessment of what our nation's students know and can do in various subject areas. Results are released as the Nation's Report Card and provide an aggregate picture of student academic progress over time. Standards of Learning Test 3-5 Once a year (Spring) These assessments are required by schools. They provide a summary of the cumulative knowledge students have gained related to the standards. These assessments are used to determine state and federal accountability for the school and the division. NOTE: The list above includes many required summative assessments.
