1 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Physician Assistant Department Course Title & Number: PHAS 5122 Introduction to Clinical Medicine: Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat Module Course Term: Fall 2016 Course Dates: November 2, 2016 November 11, 2016 Course Location: HSHE Instructor & Contact Information: Juliann Garza, Ph.D., PA-C, CRC Phone number: Office: HHSE Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9-11:30am Course Description: This course reviews the clinical diseases and disorders of the Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat (EENT). Emphasis is given on how to approach a patient with a known or suspected EENT disease. Course Grading: A B 80 - <90 C 70 - <80 F <70 Physician Assistant Core Competencies: This course will prepare the student to meet certain PA competencies. The PHAS 5122 HEENT ICM Module course outcomes and learning objectives relate to the Competencies for the Physician Assistant Profession (2012) as follows:

2 Core Competencies for the PA Profession Specific Competencies Addressed in PHAS 5122 ICM HEENT Module Medical Knowledge 1. Evidence-based medicine 2. Scientific principles related to patient care 3. Etiologies, risk factors, underlying pathologic process, and epidemiology for medical conditions 4. Signs and symptoms of medical and surgical conditions 5. Appropriate diagnostic studies 6. Management of general medical and surgical conditions to include pharmacologic and other treatment modalities 7. Interventions for prevention of disease and health promotion/maintenance 8. Screening methods to detect conditions in an asymptomatic individual 9. History and physical findings and diagnostic studies to formulate differential diagnoses Interpersonal & Communication Skills 1. Use effective communication skills to elicit and provide information 2. Adapt communication style and messages to the context of the interaction Patient Care 1. Obtain essential and accurate information about their patients 2. Make decisions about diagnostic and therapeutic interventions based on patient information and preferences, current scientific evidence, and informed clinical judgment 3. Develop and implement patient management plans Professionalism N/A

3 Practice-Based Learning & Improvement 1. Locate, appraise, and integrate evidence from scientific studies related to their patients health 2. Utilize information technology to manage information, access medical information, and support their own education Systems-Based Practice 1. Students who do not complete all components of the course will not be allowed to take the written module examination. Lectures: Lectures are used to convey critical information and background regarding the subject matter. They are intended as a supplement to the information already provided in the required textbook(s) and additional module materials. Lectures are delivered utilizing student-centered techniques to promote active learning. Instructors will utilize flipped classroom techniques, mini-lectures, and casebased learning to deliver content. Written Module Examination:

4 There is only one comprehensive examination for this course. It is worth 100% of the overall grade. The exam consists of multiple choice, matching, and true/false questions. Mandatory Remediation Policy: Remediation of course material and retesting is required for all scores < 80% on the written module examination. The Mandatory Remediation Policy is attached for your review. An Academic Remediation Referral will be created for any student needing to remediate a module. The highest grade recorded for the course after remediation will be an 80. Please consult the FYI for further policy regarding failure of courses in the Physician Assistant Department. Course Goals: The module/course goal for the student is to master comprehension of the clinical diseases of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat (EENT). Specifically, the student will understand the disease processes, clinical signs and symptoms, and assessment of EENT diseases and disorders. Learning Objectives: Accurately gather and interpret essential data from patient history, physical examination and diagnostic studies to diagnose and manage patients with EENT conditions Determine what is relevant in the history and physical of the presenting patient Record all normal and abnormal findings Recognize the relationship between symptoms, physical findings and the pathophysiology involved (applying the general concepts of the pathophysiology for the assessment and management of patients) Integrate data and make assessments Formulate accurate and complete problem list in chronological order and in order of priority Formulate a reasoned differential diagnosis for each EENT problem Formulate an appropriate plan for confirming the diagnosis Assign probability of likelihood to the differential diagnosis based upon the history, physical examination and diagnostic test and procedures Course Evaluation: Mandatory Course Evaluations period: Students are required to complete an ONLINE evaluation of this course, accessed through your UTRGV account ( you will be contacted through with further instructions. Students who complete their evaluations by the evaluation closing deadline will have priority access to their grades.

5 Course Outline & Schedule: Monday, November 9 Introduction to EENT Module Wednesday, November 11 Case Study, Group Presentations, and Assessment Evaluation: Eye Disorders Points of Interest Discussion & Clinical Pearls: Eye Disorders Thursday, November 12 Case Study, Group Presentations, and Assessment Evaluation: Throat Disorders Points of Interest Discussion & Clinical Pearls: Throat Disorders Monday, November 16 Case Study, Group Presentation, and Assessment Evaluation: Nose Disorders Points of Interest Discussion & Clinical Pearls: Nose Disorders Wednesday, November 18 Case Study, Group Presentation, and Assessment Evaluation: Ear Disorders Points of Interest Discussion & Clinical Pearls: Ear Disorders Friday, November 20 Clinical ENT PA Perspective on Practical Application Module Comprehensive Review Appendix: Mandatory Remediation Plan Academic 1. Student is identified by course faculty for mandatory remediation referral. a. Any student scoring <80% on any individual course module will receive a mandatory Remediation Referral. b. Any student scoring <80% on any PHAS practical examination will receive a mandatory Remediation Referral. c. Any student in jeopardy of failing any PHAS course may receive a mandatory remediation referral.

6 d. The course instructor will review this policy describing the mandatory remediation plan and have the student sign and date the acknowledgement statement agreeing to accept remediation. Refusal to accept a remediation plan may result in recommendation for dismissal from the program. e. The student will meet with the course instructor/module coordinator to develop a General Action Plan. This General Action Plan may include one or more of the following: i. Individual review of failed exam with course instructor/module coordinator. ii. Attendance at group tutoring sessions. iii. Additional assignments to enhance comprehension of material. iv. Referral for additional study/organizational/test-taking skills offered at UTRGV outside of the department. f. The student will be given a copy of the Remediation Referral with the completed General Action Plan. g. The general action plan section of the form will be developed in collaboration with the student and dates of completion will be identified. This action plan may include one or more of the following: i. Test-taking skills ii. Organizational skills iii. Time management skills iv. Evaluation of study habits/techniques v. Additional factors identified through discussion with the student. 2. Actions must be completed by dates identified. 3. Any examination retakes after remediation has occurred will not cover any new material. Remediation retake examinations will consist of no more than 30 multiple choice questions. Only multiple choice questions will be utilized for this assessment. 4. Remediation plan must be signed by both the faculty member and the student. 5. A copy of the completed remediation plan will be kept in the student file. A mandatory remediation plan is a formal course requirement. Failure of the student to complete the remediation plan and obtain appropriate signatures by the deadline dates may result in course failure and/or recommendation for dismissal from the program. I have read the above policy and the mandatory remediation plan. I understand that failure to complete the action plan by the designated dates will result in course failure and/or recommendation for dismissal from the program.
