1 Tier 1 Core Components and Tier 2 and 3 Interventions Tier 1: Core Components Literacy 1. Core Component Name: Balanced Literacy Model Description: It is a comprehensive program of language arts acquisition. It contains all of the components necessary for students to master written and oral communication. Balanced literacy begins with creating a genuine appreciation for good literature. It includes teaching phonics, grammar skills, reading and comprehension strategies, and writing forms and skills. Direct and indirect reading instruction, shared reading, and independent reading experiences must be provided. Balanced Literacy Includes: Reading Aloud (Modeled Reading) Shared Reading Guided Reading Independent Reading First and Second Grade 2. Core Component Name: Waterford Description: Waterford Early Learning provides a complete digital language arts program. Systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, text comprehension, vocabulary, print concepts, readiness skills, writing, and oral fluency provide a comprehensive foundation for reading. First and Second Grade 3. Core Component: Successmaker Description: Instructional software that provides elementary learners with adaptive, personalized paths for mastery of essential reading and math concepts and delivers outcome based data to inform educational decision making. 2 4. Core Component Name: Making Meaning Description: The Making Meaning program explicitly teaches comprehension strategies introducing them in the grades where they are developmentally appropriate. Retelling, Using Schema/Making Connections, Visualizing, Wondering/Questioning, Making Inferences, Determining Important Ideas, Understanding Text Structure, Summarizing, and Synthesizing First and Second Grade 5. Core Component Name: Comprehension Toolkit Description: The Comprehension Toolkit focuses on reading, writing, talking, listening, and investigating, to deepen understanding of nonfiction texts with a focus on strategic thinking. The teaching and learning focus in The Comprehension Toolkit is on comprehension instruction, including: monitoring comprehension, activating and connecting to background knowledge, asking questions, inferring meaning, determining importance, summarizing and synthesizing. First and Second Grade 6. Core Component Name: Zaner Bloser Handwriting Description: Developmentally appropriate handwriting instruction delivered in a consistent, ongoing manner which supports early reading and writing development through print awareness and improved letter recognition. Strengthens students ability to self-regulate, encourages ongoing literacy growth to improve written communications, and reduce the need for handwriting-related interventions. Cursive writing is introduced to second graders in the second marking period. Second Grade 7. Core Component Name: Finish Line Description: (Include grade level appropriateness, purpose of intervention, publisher, any other pertinent information) The program provides effective exercises that are designed to familiarize students with items found on English language proficiency assessments. 3 8. Core Component Name: Wilson Fundations Wilson Fundations is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for the general education classroom. Fundations is based upon the Wilson Reading System principles and serves as a prevention program to help reduce reading and spelling failure. Grade 1 and 2 9. Core Component Name: Being a Writer The Being a Writer program is a yearlong writing curriculum for grades K 6 that has two goals: to develop the creativity and skills of a writer, and to develop the social and ethical values of a responsible person. It uses high-quality trade books for genre immersion and author studies, and easy-to-teach mini-lessons to reinforce the skills and conventions taught in the program. Writing instruction, regular community-building elements, and guided partner work are integrated to develop in students a sense of autonomy, belonging, and competence. Grade 1 and 2 Tier 1: Core Components Mathematics 1. Core Component Name: envision Math EnVision Math includes daily problem-based interactive math learning followed by visual learning strategies which deepen conceptual understanding by making meaningful connections for students and delivering strong, sequential visual/verbal connections through the visual learning bridge in every lesson. Core Component Name: Vmath Live Description: VMath Live is an on-line math resource, where students can practice math skills, prepare for high-stakes tests and play in real-time competitions of skills and speed. 3. Core Component Name: Mad Minutes Description: Math Mad Minutes are worksheets with simple drill-and-practice basic facts math problems. Students are given a short period of time (usually a minute or so) to complete as many problems as they can. When done on a regular basis, these timed worksheets will help students improve speed and accuracy with basic adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division facts. Tier 2: Literacy 1. Tier 2 Name: My Sidewalks My Sidewalks is an intensive reading intervention program that accelerates the reading development of struggling students through: 30 weeks of reading intervention, minutes every day; emphasis on deep meaning of vocabulary and concepts; and highly specified instruction. 2. Tier 2 Name: Early Success Early Success is a research-based reading intervention program for students in grades 1 and 2 who need extra support to become proficient, grade-level readers. It is a small group model (5-7 students) that provides 30 minutes of daily instruction that is in addition to the core reading/language arts program. The daily lesson plan provides explicit, direct instruction in a three part lesson plan: Rereading for Fluency, Reading the Books of the Week and Working with Words/Writing Sentences. 5 Tier 2 Name: Quick Reads QuickReads are short texts to be read quickly and with meaning. The QuickReads program consists of six levels: A, B, C, D, E, and F. Each level contains three books, and each book contains 30 texts (90 texts per level). These texts support automaticity with the high-frequency words and phonics/syllabic patterns needed to be a successful reader at a particular grade level. Additionally, with topics in two subject areas: social studies and science, texts in the QuickReads program encourage meaning and comprehension. Book 1 includes texts on Civics, and Life Science. Book 2 includes texts on Economics, Geography, and Earth Science. Book 3 includes texts on History, and Physical Science. 3. Tier 2 Name: Fountas and Pinnell (Leveled Literacy Intervention System K-2) Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System is a small-group, supplementary intervention program designed to help teachers provide powerful, daily, small-group instruction for the lowest achieving children in the early grades. LLI is designed to be used with small groups of young children who need intensive support to achieve grade-level competency. Participants include low-achieving children who are not receiving another supplementary intervention. English language learners can also benefit from LLI. Each LLI lesson provides specific suggestions for supporting English language learners. 4. Tier 2 Name: Phonics for Reading Phonics for Reading supports students who struggle with reading comprehension because they struggle with decoding. Phonics for Reading builds phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding and fluency skills to strengthen reading comprehension. Grade 2 5. Touch Math covers: Counting, Addition, Subtraction, Place Value, Multiplication, Division, Time, Money, Fractions, Story Problems, Shapes, Sizes and Pre-algebra. 3. Tier 2 Name: VMath Intervention Vmath fills critical learning gaps with a balanced, systematic approach, combining print materials, robust assessment and online technology to create confident, independent learners in math. Focus Math identifies at-risk students early and accelerates their learning with instruction that is intensive, balanced, and individualized. All grade levels consist of three units, each built around a specific NCTM Focal Point. 4.
