This student planner will assist every day in making this a very productive year. You are expected to have your student planner with you in class each day and you are to use it daily to record information regarding classes and assignments. The student planner is intended to clearly present rules, regulations, school information, and can be used as your hall pass. Please read it carefully and refer to it as needed. Students are expected to be in their class and prepared to participate before the bell rings. Arriving to class after the bell constitutes a tardy. Lunch detention and community service will be assigned for excessive tardies. SCHOOL ARRIVAL / DEPARTURE Arden s campus opens at 7:10 a.m. for breakfast. Breakfast is served from 7:10 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. Students should arrive to school no later than 7:30 a.m. Students arriving late to school (after 7:55 a.m.) must check in at the office and get a pass to class. Students must leave the school grounds within 20 minutes of dismissal time unless they are part of a specific supervised activity. OFFICE TELEPHONE As the front office is very busy and quite small, students may not use the office telephone for 15 minutes after the dismissal bell. Please make your after school arrangements BEFORE school. VISITORS All visitors must report to the office and sign in, before going to any area of the campus. A visitor s pass will be issued. Parents/guardians are welcome to visit the school if arrangements are made 24 hours in advance. PERMISSION TO LEAVE SCHOOL Students needing to be excused early for a doctor, dental, or other legitimate appointment should bring a note to the office before school. They will be given an early dismissal slip to show to the teacher of the class from which they will leave. They should report to the office and sign out on the checkout sheet. INDEPENDENT STUDY You may apply for Independent Study if a student will be absent for 5 days or more due to family illness, emergency, or personal business, and we are given 2 weeks notice. Please contact the office. Independent study is not to be used for vacation.
3 CLOSED CAMPUS Arden School, like all middle schools, maintains a closed campus. Once students arrive at school they ARE NOT to leave the school grounds at any time, without permission from the school office. This includes before school starts or when a student leaves campus while waiting for an after- school activity to begin. SCHOOL SAFETY Arden s Safety Committee is comprised of parents, students and staff, continually working to improve the school s safety plan. Evacuation and lockdown drills are practiced on a regular basis to help ensure appropriate responses in the event of a critical incident. Arden s School Safety Plan is available in the front office for review. CELL PHONES /PERSONAL MOBILE DEVICES Cell phones/mobile devices cannot be used in class without permission. Phones can be confiscated and held in the office requiring a parent/guardian to pick it up. Arden is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged cell phones. Please secure them at all times. BICYCLES/SKATEBOARDS Students riding bicycles/skateboards to school are responsible for adhering to traffic regulations and safe riding practices. They are not to be ridden on campus. Bikes/skateboards are to be locked in the racks. It is not safe to leave them overnight. BACKPACKS For safety reasons backpacks must remain in the lockers during the school day and at lunchtime. Backpacks do not go to class. Students will need a binder with pockets or a zippered pouch to hold pencils, pens and other miscellaneous items. LOST AND FOUND It is important that each student has his/her name on all clothing, books, and personal property. If items are found, it is the student's responsibility to return the articles to a teacher or take them to the office. Students may check for a lost item in the front office and may claim it upon identification. Lost and found items will be donated to charity at the end of each semester. HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION The Arden e-newsletter is our bi-weekly electronic newsletter, containing important school and PTA information, including the Principal s Message. To sign up, visit the Arden website at The SJUSD Parent Portal provides access to student information, grades, assignments, and attendance which can be tracked daily. You will need a Pin and Password. You may request one by accessing the parent portal and selecting need your login information? We encourage you to contact teachers or administrators by . In addition, announcements are sent, as needed, through a telephone messaging system. LUNCH DETENTION Lunch detention may be assigned by any staff member. More than one day of lunch detention may be assigned for an offense. Questions and concerns need to be addressed directly to the staff member who issued the notice and due process followed. COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service is held as needed. Usually 1 hour after school. Failure to report as directed can result in additional consequences. Requests to reschedule community service must be made by a parent in advance of the assigned community service date. GROUNDS FOR SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION California Education Code and SJUSD Board Policies are in effect while on school grounds, going to or from school, during lunch (on or off campus), and during or while going to or from a school sponsored activity. Please refer to the document, Grounds for Suspension and Expulsion, provided at the beginning of the school year (also available on the SJUSD website). PHYSICAL EDUCATION ( P. E. ) MEDICAL RELEASE Short Term: Students may be excused from P.E. by a parent s note for up to 5 days (students may still be required to dress down). Long Term: A doctor's written request is required for longer than 5 days. Extended: For extended illness or injury of 6 weeks or more, a student may be referred to Adaptive P.E. which meets the specific needs of the illness or injury. Such a referral requires doctor's approval.
4 MEDICATION AT SCHOOL Arden follows the SJUSD policy regarding a student taking medication at school: A designated school employee may administer medication during school hours only upon written request of both the physician and parent(s) or guardian, detailing the method, amount, and time the medication is to be taken. Medications must be brought to the school office in their original container. Medication will be administered only to students whose parent and physician deem it necessary for potentially life-threatening medical conditions or for those who need medication administered during the school day in order to interact appropriately at school. The medication form that needs to be filled out by your physician is available in the office. Medication, prescribed or otherwise, will not be dispensed to students without proper authorization as described above. TEXTBOOKS Textbooks used at Arden are the property of SJUSD. All textbooks must be kept clean and handled carefully and should have non-adhesive protective book covers. All textbooks issued are the direct responsibility of the student to whom they are assigned and are to be returned in the same condition as they were distributed. If books are lost, stolen or damaged, they must be paid for by the student. UNIFORM COMPLAINT PROCEDURES The district has primary responsibility for ensuring that it complies with state and federal laws governing educational programs. The Board of Education encourages the early, informal resolution of complaints at the site level whenever possible. The district shall investigate complaints and seek to resolve those complaints in accordance with the district's uniform complaint procedures. The district shall follow uniform complaint procedures when addressing complaints alleging unlawful discrimination, failure to comply with state /federal laws relating to the sufficiency of textbooks or instructional materials, emergency or urgent facilities conditions, and teacher vacancy or misassignment. Copies of the Uniform Complaint Forms are available in our office or by calling the district at SPECIAL ACTIVITIES It is our hope that every student will participate in as many extracurricular activities as possible, as these events give students a complete middle school experience. Regular school rules are in effect at all events. Students must attend the day of the activity in order to participate in that evening s event. DANCES Only students can attend school dances. Parent permission slips are required for all dances. Once a student enters the dance and receives the dance bracelet, he/she is required to follow all dance guidelines and stay until it is over. If a student does not follow the rules, the student s parent/guardian will be called to escort the student home. STUDENT BODY I.D. CARD Student body I.D. cards are issued to each student at the beginning of the school year. Replacement for a lost card is $2.00. REPORT CARDS Report cards are issued quarterly and mailed home approximately five (5) school days after the end of the quarter. Progress reports are given to the students during the fifth week of the quarter. Report cards and progress reports are also available online via the Parent Portal. The report card marking system is as follows: ACADEMIC: A Outstanding F Failure B Good P Passing C Satisfactory I Incomplete D Minimal Achievement What does an I mean? An I represents an incomplete mark. When a student is performing below grade level standard and/or has missing or incomplete summative assessments (graded standards-based assignments or learning targets), this will be communicated on their progress report. What can I do if I get an I? Meet with your teacher. identify areas of need make an improvement plan establish a timeline Study/prepare for your re-take or complete missing work. Complete tasks required from improvement plan. At the end of the quarter, a student who still has an I will receive a D or F on the report card.

Arden's PAW program is a positive behavior recognition program that encourages students to consistently demonstrate Arden's core values (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe). Teachers reward students with PAWs which the students can use to earn privileges, as well as enter weekly and quarterly drawings. At the end of the school year many students receive recognition for outstanding work in their classes, as well as for academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities and citizenship. 6 ARDEN MIDDLE SCHOOL DRESS CODE ZONE The netted area represents THE ZONE No front or back body parts may be exposed in THE ZONE. Tops must have straps. The measurement from above the collarbone to the lowest part of the shirt's neck must be no more than 4 inches. Cleavage may not be shown and bras must be covered. Shirts must extend past the beltline. Inseams on shorts must be at least 3 inches. The measurement from the bottom of dresses and skirts to the center of the kneecap must be no more than 6 inches. Undergarments may not be exposed. Undergarments are underwear, shorts, boxer shorts, panties or any other type of garment.
