Hawkins Senior Public School and Port Hope High School offer programs and services for students from grade Dr. Hawkins receives students from five junior elementary schools within the Municipality of Port Hope. The Extended Immersion Program, commencing in Grade 5 at Central Public School, continues at Dr. Hawkins and PHHS. Students are invited to join the Immersion program in grade 7 or 8 as an enriched language experience. MISSION STATEMENT In an environment that is safe, secure and respectful, we provide programs and services that recognize the distinct characteristics and diverse needs of our senior elementary and secondary students. Our goal is to enable all students to acquire knowledge, skills and experiences that prepare them to become contributing and caring members of society. VISION OF THE DR. M.S. HAWKINS and Port Hope HS GRADUATE Program planning and service delivery at our school focuses on our vision of what a graduate needs to know, be able to do and experience. 2 Students/Staff There are 1050 students attending Dr. Hawkins/PHHS. The administrative team, of Principal and 2 Vice-principals serves the needs of all staff, students and parents at both Dr. Hawkins and PHHS. Our expert, qualified staff consists of 63 Teachers, 6 Educational Assistants, 1 Child and Youth Worker, 5 Secretaries and 9 custodians. Approximately 20% of our students are identified with special education needs and 75% of the teaching staff have qualifications in Special Education. Approximately 78% of our students continue with post-secondary education. Our emphasis on academic excellence is best reflected in the achievements of our graduates. In November 2006, 139 students receive their High School Diploma. Of these, 20 were Ontario Scholars. Award winners are recognized with bursaries, scholarships, and prizes in excess of $30,000. Our graduates found placements at Ontario s Universities, Community Colleges and in the world of employment. Our recent grads have won the prestigious Queen s University Chancellor Scholarship which amounts to $26,000 over the four year program, the Canada Trust Scholarship worth up to $50,000, Western National Scholarships for $24,000 plus st room and board for the 1 year, University of Ontario Institute of Technology for $24,000 and the Millennium Scholarship. SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT We believe in providing a healthy, safe and positive school environment. COUNSELORS A School Board Counselor, Board Psychologist and several community social agencies (CAS, Kinark, Port Hope Police and Rebound) provide emotional, social and personal support to individuals and groups of students. PEER MEDIATION Students are trained to provide support for their peers to facilitate conflict resolution. Guidance staff or the Vice-principal will arrange sessions when appropriate. CODE OF CONDUCT The Dr. Hawkins agenda and the PHHS planner outline behaviour expectations, interventions and consequences for easy reference by students and their families. W e support solution-focused resolution to conflicts and personal responsibility for behaviour. Students involved in conduct injurious to others may be asked to take part in our Restorative Justice program which brings all parties in a dispute together to find a common ground from which to move to a positive resolution for all Facilities We are very proud of our facilities which include a number of speciality classrooms including a Technological wing, Instrumental Music, Art, Library, Family Studies, Photography, Lecture Theatre, Drama & Dance, a Communications Lab, several Computer Labs, Special Education Resource Rooms, Learning and Life Skills, and 3 Gymnasiums. All classrooms have computer work stations and printers. Computer technology links us to every other school in the system including the Board resources and we have high speed access to the internet. We have a full service cafeteria offering breakfast, lunch and snacks. In addition, we have a Naturescape, a climbing wall and a well equipped cage sporting the latest workout machines and equipment. Dr. Hawkins/PHHS School Council The School Council advises on school policies, such as: our Code of Conduct, Assessment & Evaluation, Special Education, Excellence in Leadership, school priorities and budget decisions. The council, along with the staff and students provides input into our School Improvement Plan. We set student achievement targets as a school community. The school council supports fund-raising initiatives to provide valuable school resources. Council members are active as school volunteers who support our Library, act as tutors in reading and mathematics, coordinate the Book Fair, provide speakers for the Teacher Advisor Program, assist with fund-raising and act as chaperones and supervisors on school trips. DR. HAWKINS STUDENT RESOURCE TEAM (SRT) AND PHHS STUDENT GOVERNMENT Student representatives organize team building and spirit activities throughout the year. The activities include: organizing dances and spirit days, fund-raising, delivering announcements, assisting with school tours and transition activities for students moving from grade 6-7 and grade 8-9. W e are proud of the leadership opportunities available for our students. We encourage all students to become involved in life at school. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES There are numerous leadership opportunities for students to pursue. The activities include: Sports Teams & Intramurals Drama Outdoor and Environmental Education Interact Club Social Issues Club Christmas Hamper Program Terry Fox Run Band Yearbook Our school has approximately 40 teams including 3 pitch, basketball, volleyball, soccer, hockey, harrier, badminton, rugby, wrestling & swimming. The KPR Board of Education provides financial support for our extra curricular programs. Supports to Students

3 DR. M.S. HAWKINS and PHHS ASSESSMENT IMPROVING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Staff support each other to improve their classroom practices and to increase student achievement. Our teachers review the results from the Grade 6, 9 and 10 EQAO tests and develop action plans to support the needs of our students in mathematics, reading and writing. We review and evaluate our achievements yearly and develop new action plans to reach our goals. To improve our overall student results (minimum of 2 %) in Literacy, we are implementing the following strategies: conduct professional development at monthly staff meetings on Instructional Intelligence introduce Literacy and Numeracy coordinators to engage and coordinate staff from Dr. Hawkins and PHHS to help align curriculum and to plan and facilitate increased student achievement through all grades identify grade 7, 8 and 9 students who require increased support assign reading tutors to provide one-on-one reading support prepare a package of materials for home study align instructional practices with test requirements design and implement assignments on 4 styles of writing in all subject disciplines in grades 7-10 implement an After School Program focusing on remediation and essential literacy skills To improve our overall results (minimum of 2%) in mathematics, we are implementing the following strategies: engage staff from Dr. Hawkins and PHHS on the Mathematics Committee to align curriculum expectation conduct professional development for teachers in grades 7, 8 and 9 on TIPS increase communication with parents on curriculum expectations for each level of difficulty (academic, applied and essential) and distribute an information brochure on Successful Mathematics Strategies conduct a grade 8 mathematics challenge to determine achievement of expectations and to assist in student placement in grade 9 collaborate with grade 6 teachers to track results from EQAO and identify students who require increased support design a series of practice activities to prepare grade 9 students for the EQAO assessment conduct Math lab for P.H.H.S. students to provide extra support implement an After School Program focusing on remediation and essential mathematics skills at Dr. Hawkins
