This workshop presents an overview of OPWDD services such as Respite, Community Habilitation, Environmental Modifications, etc. and the role of the Medicaid Service Coordinator (MSC). Wednesday, September 10, 2014, 10am 12pm Boundaries and Socialization Learn how to teach your child socialization skills while also maintaining boundaries necessary to interact with others appropriately. Topics include establishing personal space, how to behave towards a family member versus a friend versus a stranger, etc. Thursday, September 11, 2014, 10am 12pm Developing Positive Behaviors Does your child act out at school, home, or in public? This workshop will explore typical causes for inappropriate behaviors from tantrums to physical aggression and more. Learn strategies to transform bad behaviors as well as how to develop a behavior plan for your child. Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 10am 12pm Basic Advocacy Learn how to advocate and navigate through school placements, Committees of Special Education (CSEs), Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and more. Also, learn how to prepare for IEP meetings (how to prepare, what to ask, etc.). Tuesday, September 23, 2014, 10am 12pm Behavioral Strategies to Manage Challenging Behavior during Medical Procedures Does your child frequently act out while at the dentist s or the doctor s? The purpose of this presentation is to help parents understand challenging behaviors and why they occur. You will learn easy, practical behavior strategies to reduce or prevent challenging behaviors, as well as age-appropriate replacement behaviors. Tuesday, September 30, 2014, 10am 12pm Daily Living Skills Learn how to teach your child the necessary skills for Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as dressing, washing hands, brushing teeth, etc. You will learn how to break skills down into doable steps and teach using prompting and reinforcements to help your child progress towards independence. October 2014 Wednesday, October 1, 2014, 10am 12pm Social Thinking Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. How we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions. Challenges with Social Thinking are commonly experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (high-functioning), social communication disorder, Asperger s, ADHD, nonverbal learning disability (NLD) and similar diagnoses. Come learn some strategies that target improving individual social thinking abilities. 2
3 Wednesday, October 8, 2014, 10am 12pm Journey to Adulthood: What Parents Need to Know about Sexuality The purpose of this presentation is to give parents the tools and ideas for navigating sexuality, self-care, and social skills for teens with developmental disabilities. Topics will cover task analyses for teaching self care skills, social stories, and a five-point scale to build social skills, teach boundaries, and how to handle puberty. Tuesday, October 21, 2014, 6pm 8pm Thursday, October 9, 2014, 10am 12pm Alternatives for Adolescents/ Transition to 21 with Lilliana Diaz Pedrosa of Advocates for Children of New York Learn about the new diploma options (CDOS Career Development and Occupational Studies and SACC Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential) for students with special needs who are transitioning to 21. Learn about OPWDD and get information about the new resources being developed to assist students with disabilities prepare for future employment. Tuesday, October 14, 2014, 10am 12pm Seeking Employment for Adults with Employment for individuals with disabilities is a valuable experience that teaches social and life skills and fosters independence. However, the process of finding employment as well as on-the-job performance may seem intimidating. This workshop will introduce resources for finding employment, on-the-job considerations for adults with disabilities, and evidence-based strategies and tools to maximize success in the workplace. Thursday, October 16, 2014, 10am 12pm Journey Into Relaxation with Robert Friedman, MA, of Stress Solutions In this workshop you will learn quick and practical stress management techniques such as deep breathing and visualization. The focus is on helping you to relax, but the techniques learned can be shared at home as well. Tuesday, October 21, 2014, 10am 12pm with lawyer Andrew Cohen and financial advisor Mitchell Weisbrot Thursday, October 23, 2014, 10am 12pm Autism and Special Education Every child has the right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Find out how to achieve this for your child and learn about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), services available to students with Autism/ASD through the Department of Education in NYC, and advocacy strategies. Tuesday, October 28, 2014, 10am 12pm Play Skills Sometimes children with disabilities thrive from routines. These routines can isolate children when playing and make it difficult for others to engage through cooperative play. The purpose of this workshop is to teach you how to play and interact with your child using something your child already loves, routine! You will learn how to initiate play routines with your child and how to find activities your child is interested in. Thursday, October 30, 2014, 10am 12pm Developing Language and Communication Learn how you can help your child develop the ability to take in new information and express wants, needs, and feelings more clearly. Behavior issues can arise from the frustration of not being able to communicate to others. This workshop will provide you with strategies to broaden language and communication capabilities. November 2014 Tuesday, November 4, 2014, 10am 12pm Toilet Training No matter what age, it is never too late to try toilet training your child. Learning how to go to the bathroom by themselves gives children confidence and their parents peace of mind. This presentation will teach you hands-on strategies for toilet training your child at home. 3

This workshop will outline some concerns that siblings of children with special needs may have, outcomes from growing up with a sibling with disabilities, and activities and strategies you can utilize to ensure that siblings feel supported. Thursday, November 13, 2014, 10am 12pm with lawyer Andrew M. Tuesday, November 25, 2014, 10am 12pm Community Integration/ Interaction and Travel Training Find out how to equip your child with the skills necessary to navigate his or her neighborhood, borough, and city safely. Topics include the benefits and challenges of going out in to the community and interacting with neighbors and strangers alike, making purchases, walk sign recognition, subway transfers, bus riding, and the importance of paying attention to surroundings. December 2014 Tuesday, December 2, 2014, 10am 12pm Sleeping through the Night Often, children with special needs have difficulty when it comes to bedtime. These difficulties can range from sleeping through the night to staying in their own bed instead of sleeping with their parents. This workshop will provide you with evidence-based strategies to maximize the potential for bedtime success with your children. Thursday, December 4, 2014, 6pm 8pm Tuesday, December 9, 2014, 10am 12pm OPWDD Educational Services and Elizabeth Marsh, LMSW, of SKIP of NY Learn about educational services and options that are available for your child, including options offered through OPWDD. We will be discussing afterschool programs, weekend programs, respite, and more.

PLEASE NOTE: Your child s 2014 FET requirement must be fulfilled by December 31, 2014 or you risk losing your child s HCBS Waiver and thus his/her Medicaid coverage if FET is the only HCBS waiver service that your child is receiving. If you know that you will not be able to attend the FET workshop that you have registered for, you must notify us as soon as possible so that we can offer your space to another family. It is your responsibility to register for another FET workshop. Wednesday, December 17, 2014, 6pm 8pm Boundaries and Socialization Learn how to teach your child socialization skills while also maintaining boundaries necessary to interact with others appropriately. Topics include establishing personal space, how to behave towards a family member versus a friend versus a stranger, etc. Monday, December 22, 2014, 10am 12pm Traveling with Kids with Developmental Traveling with kids with disabilities presents unique challenges for parents and caregivers. This presentation will outline available resources for traveling on airplanes, getting through security, and making sure your children are as comfortable as possible for the journey. We will discus strategies for setting up resources in advance and how you can be confident that you are prepared for the trip. Lastly, we will share helpful tips to make traveling long distances a little easier. Tuesday, December 23, 2014, 6pm 8pm Emergency Preparedness You want to be ready if disaster strikes, especially if a child with special needs depends on you. Learn how you and your family can be prepared for any kind of emergency from fires to black outs to floods with resources from the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). 5
