1 BALDWIN PARK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Description Education Specialist DEFINITION Under the supervision of site principal, as part of an elementary or secondary teaching assignment, be responsible for the educational program for students who have an active Individual Education Plan (IEP) by providing instruction through sound instructional planning and the use of appropriate teaching methods and strategies in the delivery of the instruction. To assist in related school programs as assigned. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to this position. This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the tasks assigned to this position. Duties and responsibilities of the assignment may vary. A. Provide individualized or small-group standards-based instruction in the subject areas for which the student is programmed, utilizing the grade-level curriculum approved by the board of education and other appropriate learning activities commensurate with the emotional, physical, and intellectual abilities and needs of the student. B. Provide an appropriate environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitude, and social skills to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning. C. Maintain on-going communication with site administration, staff, and parents to ensure an instructional program which meets the remedial/developmental needs of the students. D. Evaluate pupils academic and social growth regularly and make adjustments in the program to better facilitate the attainment of goals and objectives; prepare progress reports as needed. E. Schedule, prepare for, and participate in all IEP meetings for students in case load, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, and submit the completed paperwork to the district office within the prescribed timeline. F. Keep accurate documentation for each student in case load in regard to attendance, behavior, academics, and work experience. G. Continue professional growth through attendance at in-services, special education staff meetings, site staff meetings, and other professional activities. H. Plan and coordinate the work of assigned paraprofessionals.

Appropriate methods of intervention. Available community resources and assistance programs. Ability to: Demonstrate effectiveness in oral and written communication. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships. Work effectively with site administration, teaching and classified staff, district support staff, and parents. QUALIFICATIONS Education Possession of a bachelor s degree and an Education Specialist credential (or other appropriate special education credential that authorizes this assignment). Possession of an English learner authorization. Experience Classroom teaching experience preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. To assist in related school programs as assigned. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to this position. Plan and provide meaningful activities for a preschool class, including a program of specialized instruction and training designed to develop the individual child s mental, physical, emotional and social capabilities. B. Establish and maintain a supportive learning environment; develop and use teaching aids and devices. C. Assist children with personal grooming, hygiene and toileting. D. Maintain on-going communication with site administration, staff, and parents to ensure an instructional program which meets the remedial/developmental needs of the students. E. Evaluate pupils academic and social growth regularly and make adjustments in the program to better facilitate the attainment of goals and objectives; prepare reports of progress as needed. F. Schedule, prepare for, and participate in all IEP meetings for students in case load, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, and submit the completed paperwork to the district office within the prescribed timeline. G. Keep accurate documentation for each student in case load, which include but are not limited to attendance, behavior, and academic progress. H. Continue professional growth through attendance at in-services, special education staff meetings, site staff meetings, and other professional activities. I. Plan and coordinate the work of assigned paraprofessionals.

Child development and effective early childhood education teaching methods and strategies. Community resources and assistance programs. Ability to: Demonstrate effectiveness in oral and written communication. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships. Work effectively with site administration, teaching and classified staff, district support staff, and parents. QUALIFICATIONS Education A bachelor s degree and Education Specialist--Early Childhood Special Education credential (or other appropriate special education credential that authorizes this assignment). Possession of an English learner authorization. Experience Classroom teaching experience preferred.
