3 Content and Format The assessment consists of two books. Each book contains 150 multiple choice type questions and is given in a three hour session. The sessions are held in the morning and afternoon of the same day. The blueprint below gives the content areas and approximate percentage of questions in each area. 4 Schedule Time Validation of registration Orientation Book 1 Afternoon check-in Book 2 7:30 am 8:15 am 8:30 am to 11:30 am 12:30 pm 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Validation of Registration During validation of registration, participants will be issued an identification (ID) card. To receive the ID card, participants must show current government issued photo identification (e.g. driver s licence, passport, or military identification) in English or French for comparison to the ID card. The photo identification must show the participant s name exactly as it appears in the participant s online profile. It must be issued by a federal, provincial, territorial, state, or municipal authority, and not be expired. If the photo identification does not have an expiry date, it must have been issued within the last 10 years. Participants who do not provide government photo identification will not be admitted. 5 Instructions You will receive a book with your NAME, ID NUMBER, SEAT NUMBER and a book VERSION NUMBER. The illustration below shows where the required information can be found on the book cover. 7 Enter your name, your ID number, and your book version number as they appear on your book cover, in the indicated areas on the answer score sheet. Each question is followed by a choice of answers. Record your answer on the answer score sheet using a standard (wood) lead pencil (No. 2 or HB) only. When entering an answer, make a heavy black mark that completely fills the appropriate circle. If you change your answer, make sure that the original mark is thoroughly erased. Do not make stray marks on the answer score sheet. Each question has a score of one. The lowest score for any question is zero. You may write in the book; however, only the answers recorded on your answer score sheet will be graded. You must transfer all answers to the answer score sheet within the session time. The book, answer score sheet, and ID card must be returned at the end of the session. If any of these are not returned, you will receive a score of zero. The FDI two-digit tooth numbering system below is used in all assessments. 8 Sample Questions The following is an example of an assessment question. 1. The most appropriate antibiotic for infections of pulpal origin is A. penicillin V. B. lincomycin. C. erythromycin. 9 Regulations Participants must be punctual for all sessions. Participants arriving late for a session may be denied entry to the assessment. Family or friends must not accompany a participant as space at the centre is provided only for participants and staff. Participants must have the ID card visible at all times and must return the card to the Assessment Administrator at the end of each session. Participants must not bring devices with recording, transmitting, or receiving abilities, such as radios, cameras, cell/smart phones, smart watches, or other electronic aids/devices into the assessment room. Use of electronic aids or devices is strictly prohibited. Participants found to have a prohibited electronic aid or device on their person during an assessment will be immediately dismissed from the assessment room and will receive a zero score for the assessment. Participants must not use dictionaries, calculators, or other informative material. Participants may use ear plugs. Participants must bring standard (wood) lead pencils (No. 2 or HB) and a block eraser. Items such as mechanical pencils, mechanical erasers, pens, or felt type markers are not allowed in the assessment room. Participants must read and sign the Confidentiality and Non-disclosure Agreement provided on the morning of the assessment. This agreement must be signed in order to receive results. A sample Confidentiality and Non-disclosure Agreement is available in the participant s online profile, under the Information tab. The ability of a participant to read, interpret and comply with instructions and other written material is part of the assessment. Assessment Administrators and Invigilators will not answer questions involving content. Participants must stop writing at the indicated time. The transfer of answers from books to answer score sheets must be completed within the session time. Additional time will not be allowed. Participants who do not abide with the above Regulations may receive a zero score for the assessment. Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge 2017 Protocol 7/10

10 Leaving and Re-entering the Assessment Room Participants may use the washroom facilities during the assessment. An invigilator of the same gender will accompany participants. The Assessment Administrator may limit the number of participants leaving the room at the same time. Participants are not permitted to bring a bag or purse into the washroom during a washroom break. No extra time will be given. Once the assessment is in progress, any participant who leaves the assessment room for any reason, other than to use the washroom facilities, will not be allowed to re-enter. Participants leaving the assessment room prior to the end of the session time must leave quietly to respect those who are still completing their assessment. Participants may be asked to leave the assessment centre. Food and Beverages Bottled water, in a clear disposable bottle, with the label removed, is allowed in the assessment room. Beverages other than water are not permitted. Bottled water must be placed on the floor. The NDEB is not responsible for the time lost as a result of a participant s water spills. Food is not allowed in the assessment room. Participants who require food, medicine, or medical equipment in the assessment room for medical reasons must submit a request pursuant to the NDEB special accommodations policy. Assessment Integrity All assessment material is copyrighted. Any attempt to reproduce or assemble assessment material is strictly prohibited and violators will be prosecuted. Participants are prohibited from copying or otherwise obtaining answers from other participants, from providing answers to other participants, and from talking or otherwise disrupting the conduct of the assessment. Participants are responsible for ensuring that their answers are not visible to other participants. Participants must be aware that the NDEB uses a software program to identify suspicious answer similarities between pairs of participants. The NDEB may void the results of both participants involved in suspicious occurrences identified by the software program. Participants are prohibited from removing test material including ID cards, books, and answer score sheets from the assessment room and from copying or making notes of any test item. Doing so will be considered as compromising the integrity of the assessment. The consequences of such actions are outlined in the NDEB By-laws. The NDEB will verify that all ID cards and books are returned. Participants who fail to return their ID cards and book may receive a zero score for the assessment. As per the NDEB By-laws, the NDEB will not tolerate the reconstruction of questions through memorization or recollection and/or the distribution of assessment material for the purposes of preparing or assisting an individual to take the assessment. 11 Fraud, dishonesty, or other misconduct will not be tolerated. If during the conduct of the assessment a participant has compromised, in any manner whatsoever, the integrity of the process or conduct of the assessment, as per NDEB By-laws., the NDEB may void the results of the assessment and deny the participant the privilege of taking or repeating any further examinations or assessments. Special Accommodation Special accommodations are granted on an individual basis and are dependent on the nature and extent of the request, documentation provided, and requirements of the assessment. Requesting accommodations and confidentially of requests Individuals can request a special accommodation due to a documented disability, medical diagnosis, or for a religious reason. Requests for special accommodation are confidential. The Special Accommodations Coordinator will review the supporting documentation and may discuss submissions with the Director of Examinations and Credential Verification, In-House Legal Counsel and/or the Registrar as required. Requests for special accommodation must be submitted by to accommodations@ndeb-bned.ca and must include a detailed outline of the requested accommodation(s) and attachments of all supporting documentation. attachments must be PDF or jpeg format. Submissions must be received by the registration deadline date. Supporting documentation cannot be older than one year and must include: a detailed report or official letter from a qualified professional appropriate for evaluating the accommodation a detailed diagnosis a description of the participant s condition and specific recommendations for accommodation(s) The NDEB reserves the right to request further documentation. Last minute requests are difficult to arrange and cannot be guaranteed. Granting special accommodations The NDEB will determine the date, location, and accommodation conditions that can be offered. Accommodation(s) are valid for one assessment session and are not transferrable to subsequent sessions. Details can be found on the NDEB website. Compassionate Appeal Participants who consider themselves disadvantaged by a personal circumstance beyond their control, occurring either immediately before or during the assessment, may within one week of this personal circumstance occurring, request that the NDEB make a special consideration to void the results of the assessment. Requests for compassionate appeals must be submitted by to info@ndeb-bned.ca. The Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge 2017 Protocol 9/10

12 NDEB may grant permission for the participant to withdraw from the assessment. Participants may also request special consideration for a refund of up to 50% of the assessment fee. Details can be found in the NDEB By-laws and Policies for Assessments and Examinations available on the NDEB website. Passing Standard In order to assure a consistent level of difficulty, the NDEB uses test equating and re-scaling procedures to correlate participant raw scores to scores on a reference assessment and to a standardized passing score of 75. Participants must obtain a minimum test equated, re-scaled score of 75 to be successful in the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge. Participants whose test equated, rescaled score on the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge is 75 or higher may register for the Assessment of Clinical Skills and the Assessment of Clinical Judgement. The assessment may contain a number of questions that are being tested and these questions may not contribute to any participant s result. Results The results of the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge will normally be released within six weeks from the date of the assessment. notification will be sent when results are available in the participant s online profile. Results will not be released by telephone, , or fax. The results of the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge will be sent to universities in Canada offering a Qualifying or Degree Completion Program. Results cannot be obtained from educational institutions or Provincial Licensing Authorities. Manual Rescore Within three months of the release of results, participants can request a manual rescore. Two NDEB staff members perform a manual re-score by comparing the answers on the participant s answer score sheet with the master answer key. The result of the manual rescore will be the final result. In most circumstances, this process confirms that no errors were made during the scanning and electronic scoring process. Only participants who received a failing grade can request a manual rescore of their assessment. Participants with a pass result are not eligible for this service. Repeats A participant can take the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge a maximum of three times. Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge 2017 Protocol 10/10
