2 The Dyslexia Helpline Number of Enquries Helpline Enquirers Year 2010 Year 2011 Year 2012 Year 2013 Year 2014 Series Dyslexia Scotland aims to encourage and enable dyslexic people, regardless of age and abilities to reach their potential in education, employment and life. This mission is achieved through many of Dyslexia Scotland s services including its flagship service, the Dyslexia Helpline. Helpline enquiries come in the form of telephone calls as well as enquiries. In 2014 the number of enquiries recorded was This represents a drop of just under of enquiries when compared to the number of enquiries dealt with in However, it is an increase of 3% compared to the number of calls in Breakdown of Enquiries Adults 30% Teachers Health Profs Others A wide range of people contact the Dyslexia Helpline. The chart opposite shows clearly that parents are the predominant enquirers (60%). This is an increase of 8% on last year s figures. 3 5 of enquiries were about the 7-10 year age group. This is a similar figure to 2012 (49%) and 2013 (53%). In 2014 most enquiries were taken about children aged 9 years (16%). Reason for Calling The largest number of enquiries is about assessments (38%). This percentage was increased by 4% compared to last year. 53% of enquiries from adults were requests for a list of assessors. In a repeat of last year, General Information is 2 nd on the list, attracting 31% of enquiries. The website also helps with increasing awareness among potential members, employers, educators and the general public. It is, therefore, essential that our website is up-to-date and relevant. The graph on the left shows the year-on-year increase in visits to the website. As you can see, every month of 2014 showed an increase on the figures from As in previous years, the busiest months of year are August to November during that period there was a total of 166,945 visits. When you compare the August to November period in 2014 to the same period in 2013, there is a significant increase of 73%. Since 2010, year-on-year, Dyslexia Scotland s website visitors have increased.

5 Type of Visitors We are able to identify the number of unique visits, new visitors and return visitors to our website. In 2014 of the 379,033 visitors to the website, 2 were unique visitors, 16% were new visitors and 7% were return visitors. 6 Most Popular Information Sources The following are the most popular information leaflets on our website: 1. Guide for Adults and Employers 2. What is Dyslexia? 3. Information for Adults 4. Ideas for Supporting Spelling 5. Dyslexia and I.C.T. It is interesting to note that What is Dyslexia? is now our 2 nd most popular leaflet after having dropped to 9 th on the list last year. Also, one of our new leaflets, Dyslexia and I.C.T. is the 5 th most popular leaflet. Social Media and Ellie s Dyslexia Blue Ribbon Campaign Dyslexia Scotland continues to develop its use of social media as a means of increasing awareness of dyslexia, promoting events and information, and interacting with the widest possible audience. At the end of 2014 Dyslexia Scotland s Facebook page had 2,251 likes, which is a 50% increase on the number of likes recorded in We had 2,881 followers on Twitter which is an 80% increase on last year. The fact that we are attracting more followers and likes would suggest we have a message that people want to hear. Ellie s Dyslexia Blue Ribbon Campaign saw Dyslexia Scotland distribute 33,000 ribbons during Dyslexia Awareness Week. 20,000 were distributed by Dyslexia Scotland and 13,000 by Dyslexia Scotland South East branch. In addition to this, over 1,200 people attached Twibbons (an electronic ribbon) to their Facebook and Twitter page to support the Campaign.

7 Membership/Branch Information Membership is dealt with centrally by the main office. Membership Numbers per Year The graph on the right shows the membership trend over the past 5 years. There has been a drop of 7.5% in membership since 2013 however work continues to promote membership in various ways including promotion at our Education Conference, during Dyslexia Awareness Week and the many other events throughout the year. Year 2014 Year 2013 Year Membership makes up the 17 branches which are located as far as the Western Isles down to Dumfries & Galloway in the south of Scotland. Our National Development Officer continues to establish and support the growth of new branches wherever people are interested in doing so. Year 2011 Year In 2014, the branches provided the public with over 80 open meetings, attended by nearly 2,200 people. Branches also provided support to the two Dyslexia Scotland s Roadshows. Our journey in August this year was to Lewis, Harris, North Uist, Benbecula and Skye where nearly 200 people came aboard Dyslexia Scotland s branded van to look at our resources and to chat to our advisers. In October, a one-day roadshow was held in Glasgow. With support from the local branch, over 80 people were given support and advice.

8 Volunteers Volunteers are the backbone of Dyslexia Scotland. Without them, the organisation just would not function in the way that it does. There is a bank of 8 volunteers who regularly assist in our main office. A few of these volunteers are helpline advisers, others come in to assist with general office duties, and we have a volunteer who keeps our resource library up-to-date. Two Media volunteers are involved in our Media Sub-group. A further 11 volunteers helped with various events, including at the Education Conference and during Dyslexia Awareness Week. Along with several of our main office volunteers, 7 Fundraising volunteers helped at our bucket collection in November. In the Year 2014 these 28 volunteers gave a total of 1200 hours of their valuable time. This figure is an estimate, but it is based on actual figures from July to December (770 hours).

9 Tutors At the end of 2013, there were 54 Tutors on the National Dyslexia Scotland Tutor List; by the end of 2014 this had increased to 61 with some new tutors enrolling and other tutors withdrawing from the list because of changes in circumstances. When the Tutor List Service started in 2006, we received 92 requests for tutors. Since then, the number of people requesting tutors has steadily increased over the years as the chart on the left shows. Last year 408 people were sent contact details for dyslexia tutors. This year the number has dropped slightly and we sent out 388 lists. In 2013, 50% of the Tutor List requests were for tutors for a pupil in primary school: this percentage increased to 59% in The percentage of requests for secondary tutors dropped from 35% in 2013 to 30% in 2014; while 11% required a tutor for an adult in 2014 compared to 15% in Requests for Tutor Lists In 2010 In 2011 In 2012 In 2013 In 2014 One of the challenges for the Tutor List Service has been ensuring that there are sufficient tutors in each area to meet demand. This presents a challenge in rural areas (e.g. there are currently only 3 tutors in the whole of Highland region) but also in cities where the large number of requests can mean that tutors reach capacity very quickly. Dyslexia Scotland continues to advertise for tutors by word of mouth; at the Education Conference and other events; through the branches and via social media.
