2 Mission Statement 2 GENERAL INFORMATION The mission of Harris Elementary School is to empower scholars through technology and research-based strategies to become highly engaged and globally prepared while working collaboratively within a connected community to attain academic success. Therefore, Harris Elementary School has implemented a 1:1 (student to device) program using the Apple IPad to create a seamless and dynamic educational experience. We envision a minimum of 80% of our students meeting proficiency on all assessments. Change of Address or Phone Number When a student moves and changes his/her address during the school year, the Principal s office must be informed so that records can be updated. The office also needs to be informed of the working phone number of parents and all emergency contacts. Daily Schedule Students should not arrive at school before 7:20 a.m. No supervision is provided before that time, and doors are not open. Students w ill g o dir ectly to the g r a de level w a iting a r ea or the cafeteria when they arrive. The first bell rings at 7:40 a.m. for all students to go to their classrooms. Students should be seated in class by 7:45 a.m. A student will be considered tardy after 7:45 a.m. Students are dismissed at 2:30 p.m. Be sure that your child is picked up from school at 2:30 p.m. Parent Involvement/Visitors Parental involvement is critical to the success of our students and our school, and we welcome your participation. However, we request that parents/guardians make an appointment to see the teacher, principal, or counselor. This will enable us to set aside a specific time for discussion. Likewise it is preferred that visits to the classroom be prearranged with the teacher. This enables us to protect instructional time from excessive interruptions during the day. Please do not go to your child s classroom without an appointment and disrupt instruction. Classrooms are defined as: homeroom, art, music, PE, computer lab, library, and recess. After the first three days of school all first time students will be expected to walk to class without their parents. For safety and instructional purposes, parents /visitors may not walk about the school after 7:45 a.m. without an appointment. All parents/visitors must sign in at the Principal s office and wear a Visitor s Pass if they go beyond the office/ entrance area. Visitors entrance to the building will be through the front door only, in order to maintain a secure environment. Office personnel will be responsible for calling a child to the office for parents and will also deliver items and messages to students in their classrooms at times that will not disrupt instruction in the building. Students are not permitted to have other children come to school with them during the school day. You may visit your child during lunch in the cafeteria after checking in at the office. Before visiting with the principal you must sign in with office personnel. Dress Code Students in grades kindergarten (K) through five (5) must wear school uniforms; navy or khaki bottoms and solid color polo-style shirt without emblems and logos. Level 1 discipline process applies for uniform violations. Persistent violations will result in more severe consequences School Mantra: I can, I w ill, I MUST!
3 COMMUNICATION Use of School Telephones The school telephones are for use by school personnel only. Messages will be delivered to students. Please do not ask that we call your child to the phone. Students should make personal plans before or after school hours. If an emergency arises during the school day, the Principal may grant a student permission to use a district phone to contact a parent/guardian. Progress Reports/Grade Reports Progress reports are sent home mid quarter. The reports will show student grades in all classes. Please contact your child s teacher any time you have concerns or questions. Appointments for conferences are appreciated. Grade cards are sent home at the end of each quarter. Parents are expected to review the grade card, sign it, and return the grade card to school. ACADEMICS Awards and Recognitions Second through fifth graders will participate in the Principal s Honor Roll, which will be recognized each quarter. Quarterly awards of Perfect Attendance and Citizenship will be given to all grades. Students are encouraged to work toward the Panther Pride Academic Award that is awarded during his/her fifth grade year. The names of those who make the Honor Roll will be published and/or posted each quarter. To make the Principal s Honor Roll a student must have earned no grade lower than an A in every class. To make the Honor Roll a student must have earned no grade lower than a B in every class. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Absences School attendance is a state law. Upon the fifth (5th) unexcused absence a petition will be filed with the prosecuting attorney to take whatever action necessary to improve student attendance which could lead to a penalty of $500. (Arkansas Law ). Excessive absences may have an effect on grades and promotion. Parents will receive a letter from the Principal s office when a student has reached his/her 3rd unexcused absences per semester. When a student has five (5) unexcused absences, parents/guardians will be contacted by phone to attend a conference to create an attendance plan that includes specific intervention strategies designed to improve the student's attendance. Upon the 7th unexcused absence school personnel may arrange a conference with the parent/guardian to discuss the student's attendance plan and any modifications to the plan when the principal deems necessary. Tardiness and Early Check-outs A tardy is any time a student arrives after school begins. If a student arrives to school after 7:45 a.m. a parent MUST come into the office and sign-in the student. An early check out is a departure any time before the school day ends. After a student receives five (5) unexcused tardies or early check-outs in a quarter, a letter will be sent home by the office. After seven (7) unexcused tardies or early check-outs another letter will be sent home by the office, and after-school detention may be assigned. Tardy and early check-out counts begin again each quarter. Due to heavy volume traffic at the end of the day, students will not be checked out after 2:15 p.m. Excused tardies/early check-outs will only be permitted with a medical note from a doctor or dentist. If a student misses two and a half (2.5) hours of instruction it will be considered a half day absence. Once on school grounds students are expected to rem ain at school until dism issal time, unless signed out by a parent/guardian in the office. 3
