5 School Goal School goals are determined each spring following an analysis of school data in Reading, Writing, Social Responsibility and School Satisfaction Surveys. School staff recommends goals. School Planning Council members are elected by the Parent Advisory Council. Our Long Term Goal: To use assessment for learning strategies so students are able to identify what they need to do next in their learning. PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL All parents of school children are members of the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC). Everyone is welcome to attend monthly meetings. 6 GENERAL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Safe Arrival Policy If your child going to be away or late, please phone the school office ext 0. If we do not hear from you we will phone home every morning to make sure they are safe. Lost and Found The lost and found is located inside the main doors, beside the gym entrance. Lost and found articles are periodically taken to the Ashcroft Thrift Shop if they are unclaimed. Parents and students are given sufficient notice to claim their articles prior to their removal from the school property. Bus Students Notification by a parent or guardian is needed, either in writing or by telephone when a student will not be taking the school bus or will be riding a different school bus. Office Information Sheets Office information sheets are used by the school to be able to have quick access to student information in times of emergency or illness. Alternate phone numbers and contacts are extremely important to the health, safety and comfort of your child. Please keep information sheets up to date so we can provide the best service to your family. School Functions and Field Trips When students attend a school function, even when away from school, all school rules apply. School functions include athletic events, trips, fundraising events and any other activity that is being sponsored by the school Visitors To ensure a safe environment for students, all visitors must report to the office upon arrival at the school. Lockers (Intermediate) It is strongly recommended that students bring a combination lock and keep their lockers locked at all times (key locks are not permitted). The school cannot be responsible for items that are lost or stolen from unlocked lockers. Students using combination locks must provide the office with a copy of their combination as the lockers are the property of the school. Shoes Students must have a pair of inside shoes at school. Parents and visitors are asked to remove wet or dirty shoes at the door. Valuables The school is not responsible for personal electronic devices that are brought to school
7 Student Drop off Please stop at the top of the stairs when dropping students off at school. Parents are asked not to use the lower parking lot. For safety reasons, this lot is reserved for staff, delivery, handicap parking and emergency vehicles. Student Pick up Please meet primary students at the top of the stairs leading to the playground. Primary aged students will not be permitted to cross to the parking lot without an adult. Parking Parents and visitors are asked to park in the upper parking lot. Smoking It is a violation of provincial law to smoke anywhere on school property at any time. The legislation applies to smoking inside vehicles as well. Hardship (Policy No ) The Board of Education of School District No. 74 (Gold Trail) is committed to ensuring that no student is denied an opportunity to participate in a course, class, or program because of financial hardship. Applications for financial support are available on the School District website or at the school
8 SCHOOL REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS 1. Students may place books, supplies, clothing, etc into their locker or cubbies upon arrival in the morning. 2. Bicycles are to be walked when on the school grounds. Students are encouraged to bring locks for bicycles. 3. Students may not leave the school grounds at recess or lunch. Anyone leaving the school grounds at lunch must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. 4. In order for your child (who is not a regular bus student) to ride the bus after school, the school requires a note from home stating which stop your child is to be dropped off at. Also, non bus students will only be able to ride the bus at the driver s discretion (enough room on bus, etc). If your child is a regular bus student but is riding a different bus, or getting off at a different stop, we also require a note from home. 5. As per School District Policy No : Expectations regarding how and when multimedia devices may be used will be determined by each school Principal and staff, and will be consistent with the school s Code of Conduct. Pictures or videos of students or staff in schools or at associated facilities or activities may be uploaded to school, public or private websites with consent of the person(s) or their parents or guardians in the picture. 6. Students are expected to take care of all classroom books and library books. take good care of all books issued - 8 -
9 CACHE CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT At Cache Creek Elementary School, we believe that all children have the right to learn in a safe, caring, and respectful environment. Our expectations are that students, staff, parents and visitors will maintain an attitude that is cooperative, courteous, and respectful. Be Respectful to Yourself caring about your learning and yourself, including safety. Some examples include: Always do your best Make good choices Be on time and ready to learn Be Respectful to Others considerate of others personal feelings and property Some examples include: Be polite and wait your turn Treat others with respect Use good listening skills Be honest and tell the truth Be Respectful to Property caring about your school and your environment Some examples include: Clean up after yourself Take care of equipment and materials Ask before borrowing Be Safe taking care to prevent injury of yourself and others Some examples include: Walk calmly when moving around the building Stay in designated areas (students need to let an adult know where they are) Keep hands off others Receive parent permission when making alternate arrangements to go home Report dangerous situations to staff Use the internet and personal electronic devices appropriately *the school is not responsible for personal electronic devices that are brought to school - 9 -
10 Inappropriate Behaviour Can consist of but is not limited to: Behaviours that interfere with the learning of others Lack of respect for others, teasing Throwing objects (rocks, sticks, snowballs, etc.) Running in the halls Unauthorized leaving of school grounds Littering Rudeness, swearing Fighting (or play fighting) Defiant behaviour, insolence Consequences Consequences will be applied in a fair and consistent manner, respecting individual rights, needs, and their age and maturity levels. Consequences will also be preventative and restorative rather than punitive in nature. The severity and frequency of inappropriate behaviour will also be considered. Inappropriate behaviour typically has the following consequences: Review of expectations and a timeout Review of expectations and loss of privileges Parents are informed Meeting with parents Student contract and behaviour plan Restorative processes where appropriate Short-term (in school or at home) suspension up to 5 days Long-term suspension (over 5 days) or referral to the District Student Support Committee Consultation with police Expulsion Where it is appropriate, students will participate in the development of meaningful consequences for violations of the code of conduct. Safe and Caring School Environments Are free from Acts of: Bullying, cyber-bullying, and harassment Threat and intimidation Violence in any form Abuse in any form Discrimination in any form including race, colour, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, ancestry of national origin Retribution against a person who has reported incidents
11 Do not have misuse of: Internet/ Cell phones / Electronic Devices / Computers students are to be aware that they may be subject to discipline (or, if applicable, confiscation of personal property) for misuse of technology if it negatively impacts on the school environment Do not tolerate the presence of: Theft or vandalism Intoxicating or banned substances Weapons or replica (toy) weapons Intruders or trespassers All visitors to the school must first report to the office * the list above are some examples of what is considered to be severe behaviour incidents Notification For incidents when there is a pattern repeated inappropriate behaviour, the teacher or the Principal will advise the parent of the student. As circumstances warrant, the Principal will advice other parties following severe behaviour incident: Parent of the student exhibiting major behaviours (in every instance) Parent of student on the receiving end (in every instance) Superintendent of Schools and / or other District Administration Ministerial agencies and / or School Liaison Officer (RCMP) as required by law School staff and school community as deemed appropriate by the Principal and District administration Cache Creek Elementary School Code of Conduct has been structures to align with and adhere to the standards outlined in: The School Act 85 (1.1) 168 (2) (s.1) Provincial Standards Ministerial Order 276/07, effective October 17, 2007 B.C. Human Rights Code (SD 74 Policy 7.10 and 8.70) B.C. Ministry of Education: Safe, Caring and Orderly Schools A Guide (Nov. 2008) and Developing and Reviewing Codes of Conduct: A Companion (Aug. 2007) both found at
12 SAFETY PROCEDURES Fire drills will be held periodically throughout the school year to ensure that students and staff are familiar with the following procedures. This notice will accompany the Fire Drill Exit Maps posted throughout the school. It is essential that students be made familiar with the contents of this notice and the Fire Drill Exit Map. FIRE ALARM PROCEDURES 1. When the fire alarm bell rings, teachers will lead the students for whom they are responsible out of the building. It is required that students follow the directions of their teacher. The evacuation of all persons is to be achieved in a quiet, orderly, and timely manner. 2. After following their teachers from the school building, students will assemble by class in their pre-arranged area. If the fire alarm bell rings outside of instructional time, students will assemble in the same manner, in the same location. 3. Each teacher will then take attendance and report to the school secretary or designated personnel when all students are accounted for. 4. Students and staff may re-enter the school only after the safety of the building has been confirmed and the all-clear signal has been given by the Principal or Designate. LOCKDOWN PROCEDURE 1. Principal or Designate will announce the Lockdown over the PA system. 2. Staff will implement the lockdown and move their students to the predetermined safe areas. They will also prevent students from leaving those areas. If a class is outside at the back of the school, they are to proceed to the Cache Creek Community Hall. 3. Principal, or Designate, will contact the RCMP and the Superintendent of Schools. 4. Principal, or Designate, will inform RCMP of all known information and then hand over control of the situation to the RCMP. 5. RCMP will inform occupants of the school, when it is safe to exit. Should students be evacuated from the building under RCMP supervision, the marshalling area for students and their families is the Cache Creek Community Hall
