Catalog Description: This course meets the objectives of the Whole Person general studies category, as described in the University Catalogue. The goals of HEA 100 are to:(1) facilitate understanding of the human being as an integrated physiological, social and psychological organism;(2) include selective consideration of such matters as human behavior, sexuality, nutrition, health, stress, key relationships of humankind in the social and physical environment, and implications of death and dying. The course includes self-care, prevention and analysis of personal health issues through participation in self-assessment techniques, class discussions, class projects, written assignments as well as presentations. Pre-requisites None Learning Outcomes By the conclusion of this course the student will: explain Wellness in all its dimensions and describe the behaviors that promote Wellness describe his/her level of Wellness and identify a self-improvement plan that will impact his/her own personal health status demonstrate that she/he has learned wellness-promoting life skills and behaviors: conflict resolution skills, communication and interpersonal skills, stress management, exercising, smoking cessation, following a diet that is low in saturated fat, high in fiber, with sufficient protein, and a reasonable calorie count. demonstrate an ability to be an active advocate and decision-maker in health related situations: list the rights of patients; given a clinical case, describe the relevant signs and symptoms that help determine the diagnosis and how to go about managing the case; demonstrate good study and research skills: use appropriate internet sites to research issues of Wellness; use a variety of study techniques (mind mapping, Cornell notes, flashcards, time/project management, study groups) to educate him/herself on health issues demonstrate professional behavior

2 Required Materials/Resources Insel, P.M. and Roth, W.T. Core concepts in Health. (Any edition is fine. It is only important that it be the brief version) Notebook with dividers for holding and organizing ALL Health 100 materials; Paper or electronic Planner/Agenda which you will be required to use in order to manage your time effectively Reliable access to the course website (all essays, quizzes, exams, and the final are completed on the course website so you must become familiar with the use of the website, stay current with the deadlines, and note any announcements) Computer/Information Literacy Expectations for Students enrolled in this class; Students in this class are expected to: 1) use the university system (Toro mail), 2) use the class website (cs-hs.info), 3) use a word processing program for writing assignments (e.g. Microsoft Word), 4) be able to access assigned websites through the internet, 5) use the Library data bases, and 6) be able to create a Power Point presentation. Please be present, on time, to all classes, and be ready to participate. b. During class, please do not use electronic devices for anything other than research. c. Please do not communicate, verbally or non-verbally, any racist, sexist, homophobic or other demeaning attitudes. Please show respect toward fellow classmates and the instructor. d. Please check your regularly for any communications from the instructor or from other students e. Exchange telephone numbers or s with at least two students in class so that you have a contact in the event that you miss a class. Late Assignments/quizzes/exams: Late assignments/quizzes/exams are not allowed. The website is programmed to reject any assignments/quizzes/exams attempted past the due date. Any student who cheats on an examination will automatically fail the course. Any student who plagiarizes all or any part of a paper will be given a failing grade for the assignment and /or the course. Further action at the university level may also be taken. Plagiarism is presenting work that has been authored by someone else as if it is one s own. Plagiarism includes verbatim copying of another person s work; purchasing work written by someone else and submitting it as one s own; taking another person s unique method of expression, including significant parts of someone else s work without paraphrasing or providing appropriate citations; or falsely holding oneself as the writer. Plagiarism is cause for formal university discipline as well as justification for the instructor to assign a failing grade in a course. Cheating is using another person s work to complete a quiz or examination. In class we will start to identify the main points in each chapter, and their relevant details, through a process called Mind Mapping. At home, you will finish the process, and write essays, based on each of the Mind Maps you created. The essays should be at least 250 words. The website is programmed to respond to the essay in the following manner: 1. The website is programmed to accept the essay, assigning it 100%, if it: a. identifies the focus of the chapter b. identifies the Main Points brought up in the chapter c. identifies the relevant details for each of the Main Points d. is 250 or more words e. is turned in to the website on time 2. The website is programmed to reject the essay, assigning it a zero, if it: a. does not identify the focus of the chapter b. does not identify the Main Points c. does not identify the relevant details for each of the Main Points d. is under 250 words e. is not turned in on time f. is a duplicate of an essay previously written by the student g. is a duplicate of an essay written by another student in the class During Units II and III, you will be expected to write a Reflection Essay after every class in response to the prompt listed on the website. 1.
