2 For your information Bell Schedule: 1st Bell 8:20 Tardy Bell 8:25 Release Bell 2:31 Code of Conduct/ Student Handbook Each student will receive a Cougar Planner and may request a paper copy of the Code of Student Conduct for Santa Rosa District Schools. The Code of Student Conduct is also available on the KMS website, Students and parents should read these booklets carefully. Each student will be tested on the contents. These booklets give valuable information Bus Schedules Bus schedules are published by the District Department of Transportation in August each year. A student may obtain bus numbers for morning and afternoon routes from that list. The phone number for Santa Rosa County Department of Transportation is Book Bags and Backpacks Drawstring bags are the approved bag for KMS. Full sized book bags and backpacks are prohibited on King Middle School Campus. These drawstring bags are not to be confused with backpacks. The bags cannot be larger than 20 x 15 and must lay flat when empty of contents. P.E. Gym lockers are available for students taking P.E. They are to be used for storing P.E. clothes during the week. Students must supply their own combination lock or locks are available for rental from the P.E. Department.. Dress code for PE is solid white top and black or navy blue shorts/pants. Medication Any medication, either prescription or nonprescription, to be administered to a student on school grounds or at school functions must be brought to the school by the parent/guardian (not the student). No student is allowed to have any medication in his/her possession on school grounds, on a school bus, or at a school function. Medications brought in must be in the original prescription container, properly labeled, and given to the school health technician (ext. 112). King Middle School has a zero tolerance policy for drugs. Visitors In order to ensure the safety of all students at King Middle School we operate under a closed-campus policy. Parents and/or Visitors are not allowed to report directly to a teacher s room. All visitors must have a photo I.D. to enter campus. Visitors are allowed on campus only after registering at the front desk and receiving approval from administration. After clearance, visitors will be issued a visitor pass and directed to their destination. Upon completion of their business, all visitors are to return their pass to the front office and notify administration of their departure from campus. Parents/Visitors are prohibited from being in are-

3 Dress Code Students may not wear clothes or tattoos that show obscene or offensive language, drugs, tobacco, alcohol or advertisements for such products. Students my not wear any color, clothing, insignia, emblem, jewelry, or other object in such a manner as to indicate membership or association with any secret organization or gang. Students may not wear leggings, tank tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, or undershirts as outer garments. Students may not wear clothing that reveals undergarments or the midriff, nor blouses or shirts which are low-cut or see-through. Skirts, split-skirts, dresses, and shorts may be worn, but must be near the knee in length. Shoes must be worn at all times (unless medical reasons indicate otherwise). Armbands, wristbands, belts, or other items with heavy metal projections and chains, including wallet chains, are prohibited. Students are strongly encouraged not to bring hats or other head coverings to school. The wearing of hats or other head coverings on school campuses shall be in accordance with the local school dress codes and shall not be disruptive to the orderly school environment. Hats are only allowed to be worn at P.E. Students may not wear sunglasses inside the building without prior approval of the Principal or the Principal s designee. Cafeteria Information Breakfast and lunch are served daily. Breakfast is $1.05 and lunch is $2.65 for a middle school student. A la Carte items are also available. Lunches may be paid for daily or pre-paid for a period of time. If lunches are not pre-paid, students must be prepared to pay daily. Students also may bring lunch from home. Drinks from home must be in a sealed can or carton. Re-sealable containers are not allowed. Free and reduced lunch applications will be sent home at the beginning of the school year or you can apply on-line at Positive Behavior System (PBS) Throughout the year your student has the opportunity to earn reward activities. Students with less than 3 teacher notes and no office referrals, passing grades, and less than 5 absences in any class period (including late check in and early check out) will be invited to attend our PBS activities.

4 Attendance Policy Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to good achievement. Any student who is late to school (after 8:25) should report to the office before going to class. Any student who has been absent from school must bring a note from home stating the reason for the absence. The parent/ guardian my call the school in lieu of a note at , ext. 116 and give the student s full name and the reason for the absence. Failure of proper notification within three school days will result in an automatic unexcused absence. If a student accumulates 5 unexcused absences, the parent/guardian will be required to attend a school conference. If a student accumulates 5 tardies or checkouts it will be equivalent to 1 absence. If 15 unexcused absences are accumulated, the parent/guardian and child will be referred to Lutheran ministries and the CIINS/FINS Case Staffing Committee. Legal and social service requirements will be addressed. Parent Involvement King Middle School Parents are welcome to use the Parent Resource Center located on the stage in the King Middle School Cafeteria. It is an excellent source of materials for parents of students in middle school as well as a source of self-improvement materials. We have two computers that have software programs that will allow parents to practice their typing skills. These computers also have software and Internet connections that will allow parents to research many topics of interest. The Parent Involvement Center also has audiotapes, videotapes, and books for parent checkout. Title 1 Report of Progress Florida s approved accountability plan uses the same FSA test and definitions of grade level as does the A+ Plan and includes specific criteria for determining and reporting progress for all schools. Not making progress in all areas does not mean a school is failing. It means that the school has not met certain standard for at least one group of students. These measures include reading, mathematics, writing, graduation rate and whether or not the school tested enough students in each group. Strategies to make sure all students make adequate yearly progress have been implemented and progress of targeted students monitored throughout the school year. FSA data and proficiency data related to subgroups will be disseminated to parents and stakeholders in school newsletters and reported at School advisory Council meetings during the school year. Right to Know Notification Parentss of each student attending a Title I school may request, and the district will provide in a timely manner, information regarding the following: professional qualifications of their children s classroom teachers, and if applicable, the services provided by their paraprofessionals as well as the paraprofessional s qualifications. You may contact the principal to make this request.

5 SPAR Report The SPAR (School Public Accountability Report) for King Middle School is available on our school website. The address for this website is: Just click on the School Public Accountability Report link on our homepage. You may also visit our front office and request to view a printed copy of our SPAR. Schoolwide Title I Program King Middle School has qualified for the Title I Schoolwide Assistance Program for the school year. This program provides federal funding to schools to raise student achievement. It is mandatory for King Middle School to participate since at least 75% of the students come from low income families. ESEA section 1114 (b) (1) requires Title I Schoolwide Program plan contain each of the following 10 components as well as related measurable goals and strategies foe implementation: 1. A comprehensive needs assessment of the entire school (including the needs of migrant children as defined in Section 1306) with information about the academic achievement of children in relation to the state academic content standards as described in Section 1111(b) (1). 2. School wide reform strategies that: a. Provide opportunities for all children to meet the state's proficient and advanced levels of student academic achievement described in Section 1111(b)(1)(D). b. Use effective methods and instructional strategies based on scientific research that: i. Strengthen the core academic program in the school. ii. Increase the amount and quality of learning time, by providing an extended school year, before- and after-school and summer programs and opportunities, and an enriched and accelerated curriculum. iii. Include strategies for meeting the educational needs of historically underserved populations. c. Address the needs of all children in the school, especially those of low achieving children and those at risk of not meeting the state academic content standards who are members of a population targeted by the school wide program. The services of such a program include: i. Counseling, pupil services, and mentoring services. ii. College and career awareness and preparation, such as college and career guidance, personal finance education, and innovative teaching methods, which may include applied learning and team-teaching strategies. iii. The integration of vocational and technical education programs. d. Address how the school will determine if such needs have been met. e. Are consistent with the state plan and any local improvement plans. 3. Instruction by highly qualified teachers 4. High-quality and ongoing professional development for teachers, principals, and paraprofessionals and, if appropriate, pupil services personnel, parents, and other staff to enable all children in the school to meet the state academic content standards in accord with Section 1119 and subsection 1114 (a)(4). 5. Strategies to attract highly qualified teachers to high-need schools. 6. Strategies to increase parental involvement through means such as family literacy services in accord with Section Plans for assisting preschool children in the transition from early childhood programs, such as Head Start, Even Start, Early Reading First, or a state-run preschool program, to local elementary school programs. 8. Measures to include teachers in decisions regarding the use of academic assessments (described in Section 1111[b] [3]) to provide information on, and to improve, the achievement of individual students and the overall instructional program. 9. Effective, timely assistance for students who experience difficulty in attaining the proficient or advanced level of the academic content standards as required by Section 1111(b)(1). Students' difficulties must be identified in a timely way and in such a way as to provide information on which to base effective assistance. 10. Coordination and integration of federal, state, and local services and programs, including programs supported under ESEA, violence prevention programs, nutrition programs, housing programs, Head Start, adult education, vocational and technical education, and job training
