The school opened in 1949, was expanded in 1954, a new gymnasium was built in 1983, and a new playground was installed in The school sits on 6.5 acres of parkland and has two school gardens. Hollywood is a dynamic community school with a tradition of excellence. Active and dedicated parents and gaurdians particpate in the school lives of the students. The parents play a key role in creating and shaping this great community school, Hollywood. We value the uniqueness and the diversity of our students and community. A positive learning environment is supported to foster the development of the whole child. We strive to enable all of students to reach high levels of achievement and to acquire the knowledge, skills, and values they need to become responsible members of a democratic society. We value and are committed to providing a learning environment that is safe, nurturing, positive and respectful. Our Hollywood Code of Conduct is rooted in our commitment to respect for others and pride in ourselves. At Hollywood, A non-profit pre-school and school-age childcare program (All Stars) is located in the school Our school operates a unique and specialized program for Blind/Low Vision students who read and write Braille and are integrated with supports into the regular classrooms. 4 Information about the success of our programs comes from a wide variety of student assessments. These assessments are based on clear expectations for all learners, consistent with those described in The Ontario Curriculum. The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning. Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using strategies such as projects, class presentations, homework assignments, classroom observations, portfolios of student work, and tests. Schools use assessment information and information from other sources to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input is obtained from a variety of sources such as student assessments, teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way, schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a supportive and challenging learning environment for all their students. As part of the annual School Improvement Planning process which is informed by an analysis of formal and informal school data, and in collaboration with staff and parents, the following school priorities have been identified: Implementing the Teaching-Learning Critical Pathway to utilize high-yield strategies for improving student achievement as using assessment for learning to guide instruction Continue with the "Professional Learning Communities" staff development model to support collaboration among teachers in implementing curriculum and aligning best teaching practices Work with the Hollywood School Council to create terms of reference for parental involvement in the school including the development of a "School Handbook" and expansion of parent education programs and school spirit/fundraising events (Literacy Evening, Allergy Awareness, Fun Fair, International Pot Luck Dinner) Review of school "Safe Schools" policies including implementation of a school-wide "Anti-Bullying" policy "Peaceful Playground" program using outdoor playground equipment and teaching cooperative playground games Focus on further development of an 'inclusionary' learning environment including resources and strategies for social integation of Blind-Low Vision students Use of electronic Ministry and TDSB software to monitor student literacy assessment results and to guide planning for classroom instruction Collaboration between Reading Recovery, ESL, Special Education and classroom teachers within the "PLC" model to support "at-risk" readers including implementation of a "Paired Reading" reading intervention program and use of special education software Expansion of Borrow-a-Book/Book Bag program using the "Reading A-Z" levelled texts and further development of the Literacy Resource Room as a teacher meeting and working space Focus on building mathematical literacy skills of students including the use of 'meta-cognitive' activities to enhance higher order thinking and problem-solving skills, use of math 'literature' and math journals Review of mathematical/science& technology resources and computer/software inventory to assess needs Ongoing commitment, as a TDSB Gold Eco-School to promoting environmental awareness and best practices amongst students, staff and parents including waste minimization, maintenance of the school gardens, using the eco-diversity of our 6.5 acre parkland to deliver outdoor science classes (in consultation with Forest Valley Outdoor Education Centre) Recognition of significant contribution of adult volunteers in the school including development of school volunteer guidelines (Code of Ethic, Criminal Reference Checks, Roles and Responsibilities) co-op students from community colleges and secondary schools and parent and community volunteers to assist teachers in the development of students' literacy and numeracy skills Partnership with OISE/University of Toronto teacher training program
