1 Edmonton Catholic Schools is now accepting applications for the position of Youth Services Coordinator (New position) Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 40,000 students and 4,000 employees in 90 schools and other sites. The primary focus of the job is the development and delivery of comprehensive recreational/active living/learning within kinesthetic environments, where wellness and life skills are supported and developed in diverse learning environments. These components will assist adolescents, with severe behavioural and emotional disorders and/or mental health concerns, to develop skills, knowledge and positive attitudes that will enable them to achieve healthy lifestyles, make positive choices, re-engage in their learning, discover areas of interest that nurture career pathways, and be able to successfully integrate into society. The job works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to enhance the education and development of adolescents with high needs and/or adolescents that are not able to learn within a traditional school setting. In delivering the non-academic aspects of the program, the job has daily face-to-face interaction with students. With this level of contact the job also supervises and supports the students throughout the day. This is a permanent, full-time, Out of Scope, Level 4, position with a salary range of $50, $63, commencing August 29, Edmonton Catholic School District offers a comprehensive benefits program as part of its total compensation package. Job Qualifications: Degree, diploma in a related field (including Recreation Therapy, Child and Youth Work, Disability Studies: Leadership and Community), plus three years of directly related experience; Knowledge of instructional techniques, program development and co-ordination, child and adolescent development and psychology, behavioural and emotional disorders and/or psychiatric disorders; Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a partnership with staff, students and parents/guardians; Strong assessment and problem solving skills with the ability to manage crisis situations efficiently and effectively. Work with all stakeholders to assess the needs and interests of students and determine goals and outcomes within the parameters of the program as well as suitable programming opportunities after the school day. 2. Develop overall strategic plans, both short- and long-term, to set targets, achieve and measure goals and outcomes within a strength based programming context 3. Organize and implement a progressive range of activities both on and offsite (off site would include environments that are of interest for students to explore (that may link to career pathways) 4. Manage the programming dollars that have been allocated as per the City of Edmonton and Genesis School contracts 5. Liaise with various community groups and work closely with staff in city facilities in support of the program and to build and maintain good working relationships. 6. Educate community partners about the nature of our students and the best approaches and strategies to use in supporting students coaching both the city team and the school team 7. Work with the students on a daily basis and support them in other areas of the overall program building relationships with students is critical and understanding their needs to also revise programming as appropriate is required 8. Recognize and respond to potential triggers and signs of escalating behaviour and take steps to de-escalate or divert in a pro-active manner 9. Initiate direct intervention or provide team support in violent situations requiring physical action or restraints 10. Participate as part of the multi-disciplinary team and provide feedback on students development, Individual Program and/or Behaviour Plans 11. Provide functional leadership to the programs support staff including coaching, assigning and assessing work and providing input into assessments 12. Maintain technical and cultural knowledge through a range of professional development activities 1

Integrate assistive technology as needed and utilize technology together with the students on an ongoing basis PROBLEM SOLVING: Describe difficult or challenging situations the position is typically expected to solve; the degree of originality of the solutions; assistance available; and any problems or decisions that must be referred to a supervisor for resolution or approval The job is expected to plan activities and opportunities based on areas of need, strengths and interest. As an example, if a student was disengaged with learning, the incumbent would work together with the student to explore areas that may interest them based on their strength profile. The Youth Coordinator would collaborate with the City (and the classroom teacher), to develop programming opportunities within the City and arrange for city staff to support programming if needed such as dance instructor, training for bronze cross, etc. The job supports students in controlling behaviors within kinesthetic environments. This could involve develop a training circuit together with the students that is active, and integrates goals as outlined in the behaviour plan. The job is expected to develop a hands-on active living program and revise as needed, and then coach the student where both learning outcomes and activity work together to achieve the overall outcome. Persistency, patience, ability to modify and revise programming plans as needed is a critical component to this role. The job would be expected to manage programming from the City, within the budget constraints of the dollars that Genesis School pays to the City as per the school contract. The incumbent manages costs with budget to ensure that city programming dollars have been spent and that the programming options chosen and created match the individualized programming of each student. The incumbent would also work in collaboration with the Family School Liaison Social Worker to create after school programming opportunities for those students where needed. This role would include flexible scheduling. ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. Measures that may be included are: number of staff supervised, annual operating budget, number and size of projects, clients served or any other significant values. Include examples that indicate the size of the job. Attach a complete Organization Chart that includes supervisor, peers, direct reports and staff. The program is full-service and intended to meet the needs of students including those with extremely severe mental, emotional and developmental disorders and conditions. The students are adolescents and include those who have not been successful in traditional school contexts. The multi-disciplinary team includes teachers, psychologists, consultants, social workers, emotional behavior specialists, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, mental health therapists, and other professional staff. This alternate program resides at City of Edmonton recreational centres and based on the Alberta Program of Studies. Mastery of basic reading, writing and mathematics skills is a focus so that all students have a strong foundation for literacy and numeracy development. Competencies are also very intentional in program development and support inquiry, creativity, communication, collaboration, problem solving and so on. In addition to core subjects (which are often integrated) the program includes leisure and recreation, outdoor education, life and social skills, behavioural control and resiliency, spirituality, career exploration, counselling, personal care and transitions. The incumbent is involved with planning, as well as builds capacity with the parents/guardians to support transitions and skill building at home as well. The job manages the programming dollars to ensure that programming is organized, aligned with students interests, strengths and needs, and that programming does not exceed what was determined in the budget. As well, to ensure that what programming has been paid, is being planned for and utilized in meaningful options for students. 2
