3 ENHANCING P.E. IN ILLINOIS SCHOOLS - BACKGROUND Illinois was the first state in the nation to require daily P.E. for all students. Physical activity time in PE classes are consistently low. IL Enhance Physical Education Strategic Plan June 2012 Enhance Physical Education Task Force August 2012

4 ENHANCE PHYSICAL EDUCATION TASK FORCE (EPETF) Public Act members / Co-chaired by IL State Board of Education and IL Department of Public Health Purpose: To promote and recommend enhanced physical education programs that can be integrated with a broader wellness strategy and health curriculum in elementary and secondary schools in Illinois, including:

5 educating and promoting leadership on enhanced physical education among school district and school district officials developing and utilizing metrics to assess the impact of enhanced physical education promoting training and professional development in enhanced physical education for teachers and other school and community stakeholders identifying and seeking local, State, and national resources to support enhanced physical education

6 EPETF CHARGE: By August 31, 2013, the Task Force shall: make recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly on Goals of the Illinois Learning Standards for Physical Development and Health. The Task Force shall focus on updating the standards based on research in neuroscience that impacts the relationship between physical activity and learning.

9 HOW PHYSICAL EDUCATION CAN SUPPORT LITERACY Literacy comes in many forms. The most important thing to remember is that students are engage in movement and learning throughout physical education classes. By utilizing the use of effective literacy strategies (that should involve movement) to help ensure learning actually does take place in physical education. 11 HOW PHYSICAL EDUCATION CAN SUPPORT MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE Students can engage in learning mathematics during physical education with real world applications. We often practice goal setting which utilizes graphs, formulas, statistics, and analyzing how the data relates to each individual. 21 NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK? We are negligent if we do not provide our kids with exceptional physical education programs. Notice I have not even mentioned the fanatical burden we face with mounting health issues that people are dealing with at earlier ages. Use our energy and resources to build, and support physical education programs. The result will be our students having better health, be more resilient, live more active lives, in turn experience greater enjoyment from the world around us.

23 REVISING IL P.E. LEARNING STANDARDS COMMITTEE Review PE/health standards against national standards and make high-level recommendations Comparative Analysis of NASPE and CDC Health Standards Gap Analysis with Canadian Standards High-level Goals (19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24) will stay the same Standards may need some slight revisions

24 PROPOSED REVISIONS TO PE STANDARDS Most changes involving the neuroscience will occur in the performance descriptors e.g., 19B: Analyze various movement concepts and applications Performance descriptor might read: Analyze movement patterns and describe a part of the pattern that would show movement across the mid-line of the body and explain its effects on the brain

25 PROPOSED REVISIONS TO HEALTH STANDARDS Considering some slight modifications to health standards to align with CDC s national standards. For example: 22A - Explain the basic principles of health promotion, illness and safety including how to access valid information, products and services (added to existing standard) 22B - Describe how to advocate for the health of individuals, families and communities (add this standard and change existing 22C to 22D)
