1 AIS/RTI Mathematics Plainview-Old Bethpage
2 What is AIS Math? AIS is a partnership between student, parent, teacher, math specialist, and curriculum. Our goal is to steepen the trajectory of each student s academic path. We achieve success doing the following: Responding to the Intervention as early as possible Increasing frequency and providing multiple opportunities to math concepts Providing alternative strategies for success Creating a supportive environment that has a positive mindset Closing the achievement gap over time
3 Three Tiered TRI A three-tiered RTI program is in place to allow for flexibility in meeting the needs of students with varying levels of deficiency with: Tier 1 interventions available in all settings for all students with the aim of being preventive and proactive. Tier 2 interventions designed for small groups of students with an AIS instructor in either a pull-out or push-in model as determined by the team. Tier 3 interventions generally for students who require the highest degree of frequency and lowest number of students.
4 What does AIS Math look like at POB? Math AIS providers focus on: Math fluency Concept development Preteaching and reteaching Problem solving - using multiple strategies and decoding word problems Staffing: Elementary Schools: 1.5 FTE math specialists at each building This includes the addition of 0.5 for the school year at each building Middle Schools: POBMS 2.8 FTE full-time AIS teachers plus 0.8 FTE (shared by math teachers) MMS 2.0 FTE full-time AIS teacher plus 1.0 FTE (shared by math teachers)

8 Professional Development Beginning in 2013, we have utilized math consultant Larry Farrell to work with classroom and AIS teachers Focus on fluency and concept development - concrete, pictorial, abstract In addition, separate sessions scheduled for math specialists Demo/Modeling of lessons and fluency activities Out of district workshops (Boces, Bureau for Educational Research, etc.) 18-hour Staff Development evaluating district data, instructional strategies, and new resources Utilizing math specialists as coaches during professional hour, grade level meetings, and/or in classroom lessons Monthly math specialists meetings Professional Hour to work on smaller building and/or grade level items Curriculum Writing focusing on content emphases, assessments, and supplemental materials.
9 AIS Math Accomplishments Professional Development for all classroom teachers and academic support teachers Developed and updated Trimester/Quarterly/Midyear/End-of-year Assessments Analyzed data from Trimester/Quarterly/Midyear/End-of-year Assessments Analyzed data from NYS Assessments at District, Building, Teacher, and Student levels Created Rubrics for Trimester/Quarterly/Midyear/End-of-year Assessments aligned with the Common Core Standards and NYS holistic rubric Analyzed student performance for teacher(s) use to target instruction and set goals Decreased the number of students receiving AIS Provided earlier intervention Updated mandated Progress Reports to reflect Common Core Standards and pacing for the year
