1 PROVISO AREA FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN GOVERNING BOARD MEETING PAEC CENTER MINUTES I. ROLL CALL Ms. O Connell, President of the Governing Board, called the meeting to order at 7:10 P.M. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION No audience present. CLOSED SESSION Ms. O Connell requested that the Agenda be amended in order to convene into Closed Session at this time. Ms. Williams-Wolford moved to amend the Agenda in order to convene into Closed Session under Section 2 (c) of the Open Meetings Act at 7:11 PM to discuss pending litigation under Section 2 (c 11) and continuation of employment under Section 2 (c-1). Ms. Barthold seconded the motion. Ms. Barthold moved to return to open session at 7:22 P.M. Ms. Penny Williams-Wolford seconded the motion.

3 GOVERNING BOARD MINUTES PAGE 3 Ms. Barthold moved to approve the Consent Agenda, which encompasses Agenda items V (Payroll), VI (Bills), and XII (New Business) including the additional list of bills, presented prior to the meeting, as presented. Ms. Rivers seconded the motion. VII. VIII. IX. EXECUTIVE BOARD REPORT Dr. Smith stated that the Superintendents had recommended approval of all items listed on the Agenda. DUPAGE/WEST COOK REPORT No report at this time. COMMITTEE REPORTS No Committee reports at this time. X. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. Informational 1. Enrollment and Classroom Staffing Patterns 2. Professional Development Academy Information regarding sessions planned for August through October were included with the Agenda. Dr. Smith stated that all PAEC member district staff are invited to attend any of the Programs. 6. PAEC Activity Report Information included with the Agenda.
4 GOVERNING BOARD MINUTES PAGE 4 7. Alternative Program Students Transitioning to District Home Schools Information included with the Agenda. 8. PAL Reading Writing Intervention Program Dr. Smith informed the members that Ms. Erinn Edmonds had provided an overview of the PAL Intervention Program and goals for the school year to the Superintendents during their meeting on September 2 nd. A copy of her Power Point presentation was included with the Agenda for review. 9. Expansion of the PAL RW Tier 2/3 Intervention Program Training The information regarding training dates was previously sent to each Superintendent. The training dates planned are as follows: District 87 September 14 th, District 89 September 15 th, Districts 92 and 93 September 16 th, and Paraprofessionals September 17 th. 10. ARRA IDEA Grant Dr. Smith stated that the ARRA IDEA Grant had been submitted to ISBE for approval. Representatives from each district will meet on September 17 th to review the procedures for accessing funds and tracking expenditures as funds become available. 11. Program Updates **PAEC Alternative Elementary -The Elementary School students got off to a very positive start to the school year. Students were provided a review and practiced the rules and procedures of the school. -Staff will participate in training sessions on the Behavior Management System, De-escalation Strategies and Safe Physical Management during the first two extended Days (August 27 th and September 2 nd ). **PAEC Academy -Staff reported for their first day on August 24 th. -A welcome back breakfast was provided followed by recognition of service years and attendance. Staff were provided a review of program procedures. -Some staff members attended a session on Applied Behavior Analysis provided by Dr.Wahlberg. **PAEC Center -Staff participated in an inservice on August 18 th, Bringing Humor into the Classroom, presented by Ms. Mary Kay Robinson. The session was informative and all staff interacted in the activities. -The first week of school was very positive. Staff and students were anxious to begin a new school year. **PAEC High School -Students returned on August 19 th and staff reviewed expectations, procedures and classroom rules. -Teachers received individual student schedules and textbooks in order to initiate the academic program. **PAEC Center Vocational/Transition *New Jobs -Two students were hired to work during the summer for the Village of Maywood (CW and TL). -One student declined the job after it was offered to her (TH). -Several other students completed the pre-testing and interviews, but were not called to work. -One student continues to work at Loyola (hired in April) and has a second job at a gas station.
5 GOVERNING BOARD MINUTES PAGE 5 *Training Sites Hines Hospital -Students who are returning have completed their annual TB testing and will resume working on Tuesday, August 25 th. -Students will continue in SPD (stocking isolation carts, cleaning shelves and facing old stock) and also in the Main Kitchen (stock room, sandwich making, dish room). -Health Services has requested a student worker to help them with filing and making labels. Best Western, Hillside -They are interested in beginning training with our students again. Double Tree Hotel -They are interested in having our students return for training. Arrangements are pending. Hilton Suites -They have not yet replied to my request for training. St. Domitilla School -The school will serve as a job training site again this year. Bellwood Library -They are interested in job training again this year. *Other activities -Nine students are enrolled for the second session of the Employment Skills classes I and II at Triton College. -The first Transition Planning Committee meeting for this school year will be in September. Ms. Williams-Wolford asked if any other Libraries were asked to participate in training sites for the students. Dr. Smith stated that staff had investigated other Libraries in the community but at this time Bellwood is the only one currently able to participate. Dr. Smith stated that they have been very supportive of our students. **Intervention Team Activities -August 3 rd - Articulation meeting in District 89 with Mr. Dave Ballard, Ms. Kennedi Dixon, Ms. Val Watkins and Ms. Pam Radford (I-ASPIRE Regional Coordinator) -August 20 th & 21 st - SRA Corrective Reading Screenings at Proviso East and West High Schools -August 21 st RtI presentation at Lindop -August 25 th - Articulation meeting in District 89 with Mr. Dave Ballard, Ms. Kennedi Dixon, Ms. Val Watkins, Ms. Eva Rosa and Ms. Sue Carter -September 2 nd - PAL-RW presentation at PAEC Executive Board Meeting -September 2 nd - ASPIRE meeting at WEST 40 -September 4 th - Presentation at psychologists meeting -September 9 th - PAL-RW meeting with building administrators -September 14 th - PAL-RW training District 87 -September 15 th - PAL-RW training District 89 -September 16 th - PAL-RW training Districts 92 and 93 -September 17 th - PAL-RW training Paraprofessionals -September 18 th - Capacity building presentation with on-site PAEC paraprofessionals -Planning an SRA Corrective Reading training at Proviso East and West High Schools **OT/PT Department -The occupational therapists and physical therapists are in the process of organizing the department by labeling and tagging equipment. -All OT and PT service schedules for students are being finalized. -Two new therapists joined the PAEC team for the school year. We welcome Ms. Melissa Brenner, physical therapist and Ms. Cheryl Brown, occupational therapist.
6 GOVERNING BOARD MINUTES PAGE 6 **Psychology Department *Personnel -There are 13 psychologists and 2 psychologist interns on staff for the school year. Both interns, Ms. Alissa Fitch and Ms. Laura Aggen-Genslinger, are currently enrolled in Loyola University s Ed. Specialist program, and will be completing their yearlong internship. *Corrective Reading Screenings -Several psychologists were involved in corrective reading screenings at Proviso East and Proviso West high schools during the week of August 17 th. -New freshman who enrolled in District 209 were administered screenings in order to assist in determining reading placements. *Materials -Psychologists were provided with binders containing curriculum based measures (CBMs) in reading and writing which were downloaded from AIMSweb. These probes will be utilized by psychologists to assist in determining current functioning levels when conducting initial evaluations and reevaluations, and to progress monitor students who receive interventions in these areas. -There will be training early this school year in using math probes. *Meetings The first psychologists meeting of the new school year will be held on September 4 th. Our guest speaker will be Ms. Kelly Sculles, Intervention Team Coordinator, who will address Collaborating with Team Members as it applies to psychologists. **CRT -The computerized IEP system has been updated to reflect changes in the Learning Disability (LD) criteria. The new forms address the student s progress over time, discrepancy between his/her performance and that of his/her peers, and the student s instructional needs. It eliminates the need for an IQ/Achievement discrepancy and processing deficit. Psychologists will be using the new criteria immediately, and the old LD form will be completely phased out as of December 2009 to comply with the state/federal requirements for LD eligibility. **HOTSTUFF After School Program -The HOTSTUFF After School Program will begin on October 20 th and will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 PM until 4:30 PM. -The schedule for school days is as follows: 2:30 3:30 homework with assistance from staff 3:30 4:30 learning and recreational modules -Staff will initiate the program with the Great American Challenge, which involves testing the children s knowledge in social studies and science. -HOTSTUFF will again participate in the Lights On Celebration scheduled for October 22 nd. -This year, the staff will be attempting to initiate Family Days one Saturday per month. XI. XIII. XIV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE GOVERNING BOARD Dr. Smith provided a copy of a newspaper article which described the PAEC MIE program currently housed at St. Domitilla School. There was also a picture of St. Domitilla and PAEC students who had joined together for last year s end of the year outdoor activities. BOARD CORRESPONDENCE No Board correspondence.
