3 Marshall Schools Mission Statement The Mission of Marshall Schools is to. help students develop an appropriate plan for post-secondary success. provide students with essential curricular experiences that prepare them for college and / or the workforce. help students develop 21 st Century Life Skills, become Lifelong Learners, and understand the value of Good Character and Service.

4 Specials Monday- Music Tuesday- PE Wednesday- Art Thursday- PE Friday- Library Ag. in the Classroom and Healthy Life will meet once a month! *Please send tennis shoes with your child on PE days. *Please remember to send back library books on Friday.

5 Important Locations! The office is located on the east side of the school. Important Notes Parking East- bus drop off only and visitor parking The east parking lot is bus drop off only (7:30-8:00) and visitor parking. Please use the office doors to buzz in and check in when coming into the school after school has started. *Please remember to send a note with your child if his or her after-school plans will be changing! West (Rt. 1 side)- staff parking only North- student drop off/pick up *Please stay in your vehicle and follow the line of traffic to the designated drop off spots. South- student drop off/pick up *All entrances will be locked, except for the East office doors, for student safety throughout the school day.

6 Attendance and Visitors Please make sure your child arrives at school on time. It is very important that your child is here as we will be working hard each day. Understandable absences- illness, appointments, out of town, etc. Numerous absences will affect your child s learning and progress- please try to have your child at school. Please sign in and out of the office when visiting the school.

7 Lunch and Milk Money $1.25 for breakfast $2.45 for lunch.30 for milk Please send money in your child s plastic lunch money bag. All lunch and milk money should come in that bag. Money may be sent anytime throughout the week. Snack milk will be offered daily, after morning recess. Children are allowed a $20.00 charge limit.

8 Snacks Snack donations are greatly appreciated throughout the year. We will have snack time each morning. Only snacks from the approved snack list will be accepted. Any snacks that are not on the snack list or that are homemade will be sent home. We do appreciate all donations and we are always needing donations!

9 Christmas Party Parties, Field Trips and Music Concerts Valentine s Day Celebration A note will go home about parent help/volunteers and supplies needed if able to help closer to dates. Bus and bus driver must be paid for the field trips. Therefore, field trips may contain a cost before attending. 1 st Grade Music Concert will be in March- date TBA.

10 Birthdays Please refrain from sending in birthday invitations to school to avoid hurt feelings. Please keep birthday treats and food at home. We will celebrate birthdays in the classroom with a special hat, sticker, birthday song, pencil and sharing birthday plans.

11 ipads We will be using ipads in our classroom. (We will have 10 ipads this year!) They will be used for whole group, small group, buddy work, individual work and centers. Children will engage in educational activities and games throughout the year.

12 Homework Spelling and reading homework will go home throughout the week as needed. Please make sure to check the red folder each night! Please pull out any checked papers and important notes. Use the red folder for sending back signed homework, notes and lunch money- lunch money may be sent in at anytime. Star Card- return completed homework with a parent signature and receive a punch on student star card. *Full star card = trip to prize box!

13 Reading Homework Phonics Readers, Green Books and Leveled Readers will be sent home for extra reading practice throughout the week as needed. Please take time to listen to your child read their story. You will be amazed at their growth throughout the year! Children will read part of their leveled reader for a one minute assessment at the end of the week.

14 A list of sight words will go home at the beginning of the quarter. Children will be assessed at the end of each quarter on sight words. Sight Words 1 st Quarter Words- August 2 nd Quarter Words- October 3 rd Quarter Words- January If your child knows all words when first assessed, a new list will then go home. 4 th Quarter Words- March Please frequently practice the list with your child.

15 Reading and Math Reading will start with review from Kindergartenletter formation, letter sounds, identifying capital and lower-case letters, reading sight words, highfrequency words, alphabet and vowels practice AR quizzes will be completed on the ipad for homework stories and free reading time. Reading groups will start later in the year. More information will go home once groups are ready to begin! New math curriculum called My Math this year. Exciting lessons and activities for hands-on experiences and learning. IXL and xtramath will be used for reading and math practice.

16 Grade Cards First Grade uses a checklist report card. The report card will help parents see what specific skills the child knows and what areas may need additional practice. A parent letter will be sent home each quarter, explaining specific skills and areas assessed. The report card is similar to the kindergarten report card. S= Secure D= Developing N= Needs Improvement Secure: Your child consistently uses the skill correctly without errors. Developing: Your child completes the skill with some errors. Needs Improvement: Your child completes the skill with many errors.

19 Parent Portals/Facebook The paper informs of username and password. The portal informs of current attendance and lunch/milk account balances. Academic progress will currently go home on paper and report cards. Both links can be found on the District Webpage. Like the Marshall Schools Facebook page to be informed of school news and information. Great tools to utilize for keeping up to date!

21 AIMSweb Progress Monitoring Students will be progress monitored in reading and math in the fall, winter and spring. AIMSweb is a benchmark and progress monitoring system based on direct, frequent and continuous student assessment. The results are utilized for RtI and reading groups.

23 Response to Intervention RtI Responding to specific area of student need Assessing student s progress throughout intervention; observing areas improving and areas needing extra attention AIMSweb scores are analyzed for areas requiring further attention, practice and assessment. If a student does not meet current goal, the RtI team will meet to discuss interventions, such as: one-on-one help and small group work. Parent contact is made prior to intervention beginning.

25 Classroom Rules 1. Always listen. 2. Raise your hand and wait to talk. 3. Use kind words and actions. 4. Be honest. 5. Be a hard worker.

26 Clip Chart Behavior All students will begin each day on green. Students move up or down on the chart based on the choices they make throughout the day. Students will earn rewards for positive choices. Students who choose to break the rules will lose privileges based on the severity and frequency of the behaviors. Staying on green is a good day!

27 Calendar of Behavior The calendar will go home at the beginning of each month. The child will color the current date at the end of each day. Parents and guardians should initial each night and return to school the next day.

28 Frisbee Friday Behavior choices will be rewarded on Frisbee Friday. Students will choose a note from the frisbee. Notes will have rewards such as: trip to the prize box, juice box for snack time, switch seats with a friend, sit in the rocking chair for an activity and helping with special jobs. New week= new opportunity for smart choice behavior and a chance to draw from the frisbee.

29 Other Positive Reinforcements The class as a whole will receive positive reinforcements. 1. _ Fill in the letter blanks for the current behavior word- words such as super, awesome, great, wonderful, fabulous, etc. 2. Verbal Praise 3. Bright Bucks 4. Extra recess time 5. Popsicle parties 6. Popcorn parties 7. Movie/Juice Box parties

30 Bucket Fillers We all have an imaginary bucket inside that contains our feelings. Full bucket = positive, happy feelings Empty bucket = negative, sad feelings Each child will have their own bucket. They will practice filling other buckets by writing notes with kind words and compliments. Children will be reminded each day to fill a bucket. Buckets will be emptied at the end of the week and notes will be sent home on Fridays.

31 Star Student of the Week Each student will have an opportunity to be the Star Student of the Week. Parents will be notified the Friday before the Star Student week. Paper will be sent home on Friday to fill out about Star Student. Student may bring in 5 pictures to display on Monday. Student may bring in 3 show and tell items on Thursday. (Please leave pets at home!) Students will receive class-made book about them being the Star Student of the Week.
