2 Education Week Celebrations; Mindfulness Experience What a great success our Mindfulness Experience night was! Students, parents and teachers participated in many activities based on positive thinking, movement and relaxation. Families were treated to a delicious baked potato thanks to our wonderful cooks Mrs Logan-Brown and Mrs Wakeman, before heading off on their mindfulness experience. A special big thank you to Ms Keay & Ms Kodogiorgos for their hard work in organising the event. Thank you to the staff who assisted on night and to Brianna Evans, who had everyone dancing and moving! Kinder Club Just a reminder that our next Kinder Club will be held next Wednesday 7 th June at 2.30pm. This is a great opportunity for kinder aged children to get to make friends with the other children, meet the teachers and become familiar and comfortable about coming to school. Winter Is Here! We have had a very mild and lovely autumn, but winter is finally upon us. A lot of our students are still hoping that the weather will be warm and consequently are not bringing their jumpers or warm, water proof jackets to school. It would a good idea to make sure your child has their jumper and waterproof jackets before they leave for school. With the onset of the cold weather, many people find that their asthma seems to flare up. If your child has asthma at this time of year, it may be advisable to visit your doctor and review your child s asthma plan. Please notify the school if there are any changes to the plan. If you would like any information relating to asthma please feel free to call the Asthma Foundation on Queen s Birthday Public Holiday - Monday 12 th June Just a reminder that the Queen s Birthday long weekend is coming up soon! Personal Belongings at School We would request that students do not bring expensive or special jewellery, toys (especially those with small attachments), games, audio equipment etc. to school. There have been occasions when special toys or other belongings have been lost or broken in the playground causing considerable distress for students and parents alike. While we encourage responsible care of school and other people s property, we are unable to ensure the safety of such items. Reading Difficulties and Dyslexia Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that affects the skills needed to read words quickly and accurately. Dyslexia can also affect writing and spelling. Literacy reading, writing and understanding is the foundation for all learning. Identifying students with reading difficulties as early as possible, including dyslexia, is important to their learning in all areas. Students can then be given the support they need to keep up with their classmates and take part in all the learning opportunities at school. Typical Features of Dyslexia Dyslexia usually includes difficulty with: hearing and being able to manipulate the separate sounds in words (phonological awareness) remembering, for a short time, a list of words, numbers or instructions (verbal memory) being able to quickly process familiar letters, words, digits or numbers (verbal processing speed). How schools can help If you have concerns about your child s reading, talk to the teacher first. Working with your child s teacher is important if your child is dyslexic. The school will identify your child s strengths and reading needs to provide your child with the most appropriate help. The school may bring in other people to decide if your child needs additional support, such as a specialist teacher or (with parent permission), a student support service officer such as a psychologist. What the school does Schools encourage parents to tell them about any concerns they might have. Schools help by: assessing reading and spelling abilities from when your child first starts school using the transition statement worked out with your kindergarten regularly reporting and monitoring reading progress providing literacy support for students who have progressed as expected by the end of the first year providing classroom assistance for students with reading difficulties and dyslexia.

3 When to talk to your child s school Start talking to your child s teacher as soon as you have concerns about your child s progress. The teacher may also approach you. Your child s teacher can share with you: assessment and overview of your child s learning specific difficulties your child is having and how they are being supported at school your child s strengths how you can help at home. Features of a successful home school partnership: reading difficulties or dyslexia are identified early students are helped to make out the sounds in oral language, match sounds to letters and learn the meaning of words practical support is provided activities and tasks are provided that allow students with dyslexia to recognise not only what they have difficulty with, but also their strengths a common strength among dyslexic children is the ability to recognise images and to visualise. Digital Learning Digital Learning opens up an exciting world of learning opportunities for your child. Students use a range of technologies enabling them to access information, resources, software and tools that can support and enhance their learning activities. Digital technologies also enable you to have greater involvement in your child s learning. Your child will be using technology both in the classroom and at home to connect, collaborate, curate and create content, and to share their work with you, their teachers and other learners. The use of digital technologies also enables your child to learn anywhere and at any time, and teachers have greater access to learning resources to help them plan and provide activities. The Department provides access to quality digital resources through its learning website FUSE. Your child can access thousands of educational resources from around the world including websites, videos, images, audio and more, all quality assured by teachers. Students can discover, engage with and learn about subjects and ideas supporting their classroom activities and use FUSE to expand their learning by exploring new areas that they are interested in. Tim has displayed a responsible attitude to keep our classroom litter free. He is also becoming a very helpful computer monitor. Great job Tim. Tim will receive his certificate at assembly on Tuesday 6 th June.
