2 Aimsweb Plus is a curriculum-based measurement (CBM) used for progress monitoring and benchmarking. Progress Monitoring is a brief assessment lasting 1-3 minutes that measures overall performance of key foundational skills at each grade level. Benchmarking assessment is given three times per year and lasts between minutes per administration. STAR Early Literacy is an online adaptive assessment program developed by Renaissance Learning for students typically in grades PK-3. The program uses a series of questions to assess a student s early literacy and early numeracy skills through a simple process. It provides interim data so you can set goals, respond quickly to student needs, monitor progress and maximize growth. STAR Early Literacy tracks development in three domains and ten sub-domains: Comprehension Strategies Word Facility and Skills and Constructing Meaning Numbers and Operations Alphabetic Principle Sentence-Level Early Numeracy Concept of Word Comprehension Visual discrimination Paragraph-Level Phonemic Awareness Comprehension Phonics Structural Analysis Vocabulary STAR Math is an assessment of math achievement for students in grades STAR Math tracks development in four domains: Numbers and Operations Algebra Geometry and Measurement Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability STAR Reading is an assessment of reading comprehension and skills for independent readers through grade 12. STAR Reading tracks development in five domains: Word Knowledge and Skills Comprehension Strategies and Constructing Meaning

3 Analyzing Literary Text Understanding Author s Craft Analyzing Argument and Evaluating Text All STAR assessments are computer-adaptive tests (CATs). Computer-adaptive tests continually adjust the difficulty of each child s test by choosing each test question based on the child s previous response. If the child answers a question correctly, the difficulty level of the next item is increased. If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. CATs save testing time and spare your child the frustration of items that are too difficult and the boredom of items that are too easy. STAR tests are designed to be as efficient as possible. On average, students will complete the STAR Math test in about 20 minutes, the STAR Reading test in about 15 minutes, and the STAR Early Literacy test in minutes. However, some students may require more time. The STAR assessments are often used to screen students for their reading and math achievement levels. STAR Reading and STAR Math assessments help determine reading and math achievement levels in order to place students into the Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math programs. STAR Early Literacy assessments help educators monitor students growing literacy skills and students progress toward becoming independent readers. STAR assessments can also be used to monitor student growth throughout the year, to estimate students understanding of state standards, and predict students performance on the state test. In addition, STAR can help teachers determine appropriate instructional levels and skills that students are ready to learn. Informal Classroom Assessments- The Kindergarten Informal Assessment is a formative assessment given to all kindergarten students four times per year. This assessment is designed to test students progress and mastery of the Minnesota Kindergarten State Standards set by the Minnesota Department of Education in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Assessment length varies from 3 minutes to 20 minutes. Fountas and Pinnell Benchmarking Assessments are used to determine student s independent and instructional reading levels, teachers are able to observe student reading behaviors one-on-one, engage in comprehension conversations that go beyond retelling, and make informed decisions that connect assessment to instruction. Student testing takes approximately minutes each. Each assessment enables teachers to: Determine students instructional and independent reading levels Recommend a placement level for instruction

4 Form initial groups for reading instruction Plan for efficient and effective instruction Identity students who need intervention and extra help Monitor and report student progress across a school year and grade levels Assess the outcomes of teaching Inform parent conferences Reading/Math Assessments are Common Formative Assessment that is given to all second grade students three times per year. Each test (math and reading) is designed to test the student s understanding and mastery of the Minnesota state standards set by the Minnesota Department of Education. Assessments take approximately 45 minutes to complete. MCA Math/Reading/Science the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) and alternate assessment, Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS), are the statewide tests that help districts measure student progress toward Minnesota's academic standards and meet the requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Students in grades 3-8 and 11 take the math MCA, grades 3-8 and 10 take the reading MCA and grades 5, 8 and HS take science MCA. The assessments take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours each to complete. Every assessment is spread out over several days to complete; to minimize student anxiety and tiredness. ACT is a nationally administered, standardized paper-and-pencil test that helps colleges evaluate candidates. The test is administered in April during the school day. If students are not satisfied with their scores, they may reschedule to retake them at a later date. The ACT encompasses English, Mathematics, Reading, Science and optional Writing test. The ACT test is timed and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to administer. Results typically take 4-6 weeks to receive. ACT ASPIRE formerly the ACT Plan and Explore. Aspire predicts an ACT score, but its format and scoring are very different and it has much broader goals. The goal of Aspire is to identify learning gaps early on to help students stay on track for college readiness, while also preparing students for the content on the ACT. Aspire will also track college readiness using the ACT s benchmarks. The Aspire has five sections that align with the ACT Plus Writing subject areas: Reading, English, Math, Science and Writing. Aspire questions can be multiple choice, short answer, or long answer (including essays and narratives). The test is taken online during a five day window, with each day testing a different subject area. The test is timed, like the ACT, totaling 3 hours.

5 AP Advanced Placement exams are offered to students who have taken an Advanced Placement class during the school year. These courses are college-level studies. With a successful exam score, students earn college credit and placement. Results are available online in early July. ASVAB is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery assessment that helps you identify which Army jobs (Military Occupational Specialties) are best for you. The ASVAB measures your knowledge and ability in ten different areas. It is not an IQ test, but does help the Army assess which jobs you are best suited to perform. The ASVAB is a paper-pencil test given by test administrators from the federal government at our school during the school day and is optional. Registration and sign up information will be provided to students during the school year. The following calendar contains all district and state assessments for the school year. The testing window and grade level are indicated for each assessment. For assessments in bold print, the assessment date is set and cannot be changed by us.
