DOLPHIN BAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL-WIDE MANAGEMENT PLAN INTRODUCTION The Schoolwide Management Plan was developed by a committee with input from all teachers. Its purpose is to provide a framework for teachers to properly communicate desired or acceptable behavior to students. The goal is to create a positive learning environment so that all students will learn to treat each other with respect and dignity. Establishing a sense of responsibility and discipline is an on-going process and must be embraced by everyone who is involved with the teaching-learning process. To keep this process alive, the Dolphin Bay Discipline Committee will meet on a regular basis, seek input from staff on possible improvements, and facilitate a yearly review of procedures. The rules and guidelines outlined will be incorporated with classroom rules and the district s Code of Conduct so there will be consistency of effort, which should lead to improved student conduct schoolwide. Following the procedures as outlined in this document will facilitate that process. Everyone on staff is a vital part of the staff and therefore, contributes to the friendly, nurturing, and inviting environment. The tone for our school is set by our actions, attitudes, and behavior. Our support, cooperation, and encouragement will be demonstrated through four important procedures: a) We will teach students expectations for responsible behavior in every school environment. b) We will provide positive feedback to students when they are meeting expectations and following the Dolphin Bay Rules. c) When minor misbehaviors occur, we will view the misbehavior as a teaching opportunity, responding calmly with consistent corrections or consequences. d) We will work collaboratively to solve problems that are severe or chronic in nature. 2

DOLPHIN BAY RULES LISTEN AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT COOPERATE WITH OTHERS BE RESPONSIBLE AND ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST THINK BEFORE YOU ACT TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES The teacher is the core of our school responsibility and discipline policy. Teachers will focus on teaching and encouraging responsible behavior, rather than trying to control irresponsible behavior. The following are three basic principles of behavior management to be implemented by all teachers: At the beginning of the new school year, and as necessary through the school year, students will be taught how to behave responsibly in the classroom and other school settings. Teachers will strive to interact frequently with each student when the student is behaving appropriately. When misbehavior does occur, teachers will calmly and consistently implement classroom consequences. The focus of interactions with each student will continue to be primarily positive with a ratio of at least three positive interactions to every correction. Though these principles will guide teachers in their classroom management, each teacher, each student, and each situation is unique. Specific procedures to be used will be at the discretion of the teacher and will be based on student needs and the situation. When chronic misbehavior occurs, staff will work collaboratively to assist a student in learning to behave in a responsible manner. The staff at Dolphin Bay Elementary acknowledges that teachers most probably provide a student s best hope for learning to be more successful. Office referrals are to be reserved for severe misbehavior in order to maintain effectiveness. Each team/grade level will establish a Classroom Discipline Plan in the fall. These will be kept on file and may be updated whenever there is a need. (Appendix 1) 3

This means that if a student is referred to the office for breaking a rule, the level of consequence applied is determined by the number of times he/she has been referred. Serious behavior incidents or patterns of behavior are recorded on TERMS and become part of a student s record. CAFETERIA BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT The cafeteria will be a safe and clean environment where people interact with respect and courtesy. Students are expected to follow rules as outlined by the teacher. Coming to Lunch and Lunch Line: While in line, students will keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves. Students will use quiet voices in the lunch line. Lunch Area Procedures: Students will use quiet voices when talking. Students will keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves. Students will remain in their seats and raise their hands to get help. Students will eat quietly and with good manners. Students will walk in the lunch area. Everyone will treat others with respect. Lunchroom Dismissal Procedures: Students will clean the table and the floor as requested. One side of the lunch table will be dismissed at a time. Students will line up quietly and wait for their teacher. Cafeteria Discipline/Incentive Plan The Cafeteria Discipline/Incentive Program will be initiated on the first day of school. Classes will earn points (up to 5) for following the cafeteria discipline plan/rules. Once a class earns 100 points, place them in an envelope with the class name on it, and put them in the Assistant Principal s mailbox. The Assistant Principal will then arrange for the class to have an ice cream party in the cafeteria during lunch (parties will not be given on Wednesday as this conflicts with the ice cream that is sold in the cafeteria). 7

Once the class earns 100 points, the process begins anew. Paraprofessional Responsibilities: Paraprofessionals will monitor classes and enforce the above procedures. If a student does not follow the guidelines, positive practice and/or a verbal reprimand will be given. Students will lose their logo for improper behavior. If behavior continues, the student will be removed from their table and placed in an isolated area. Both good behavior and undesirable behavior will be reported to the classroom teacher. Classroom Teacher Responsibilities: Review the rules and expectations as outlined at least one time per month. Adhere strictly to the scheduled lunch times. Support the lunchroom procedures by providing consequences and rewards. Have students bring their logo basket to the cafeteria daily. PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION The duties of the teacher during recess are the following: Remain on the playground during the entire play period. Children may not be left unattended. Be alert at all times. Talking to students, parents, or other teachers distracts one from being alert. Continuously patrol the entire play area in use. Maintain visual supervision over all area. Remain visible to the students. Encourage and reinforce good playground behavior. Take prompt action to stop inappropriate behavior before problems or accidents occur. Keep playground clean from debris such as rocks, broken glass, branches, and trash. Teach children to clean up after themselves. Students are not to bring rocks, branches onto playground. Report broken glass, debris, dangerous objects on school grounds to the office (head custodian). Do each time you use playground. When a student becomes ill or injured on the playground: Assess the extent of the injury. Remain on the scene. Provide immediate assistance or first aid if necessary. Contact the office so the injured/sick student can be brought to the office unless injury is serious. 8

Do not move student if injury is serious. Contact the office to help or notify office through the intercom (CODE BLUE). Advise parents of injuries that occur on playground. Complete an accident report form. Specify in detail the cause. Include the name of any playground equipment involved. Report in writing to administration at end of play period when: playground equipment maintenance problems are observed or suspected. serious injuries of illnesses have occurred. NOTE: NO MORE THAN THREE CLASSES ARE TO BE PRESENT AT ONE TIME ON A STANDARD SIZE PLAYGROUND AREA. PLAYGROUND TIME WILL BE SCHEDULED TO ALLEVIATE CONGESTION. GUIDELINES FOR OTHER COMMON AREAS It is important to share consistent expectations for moving students around the campus. Without consistency from adults, there will be continued testing of limits by students. With clarification of expectations, the staff can focus on encouraging student responsibility, and reduce the need to correct misbehavior. Expectations should be taught and re-taught. The younger the student, the more time teachers will spend discussing, modeling, practicing, and role playing. Responsible Behavior Walking Around Campus: Students will move safely through on the walkways, keeping hands and feet to themselves. Normal speaking voices will be used in the walkways. If an adult requests that a behavior is to be corrected, the student will do so as requested. Students are to wait quietly before school begins. Students are to follow dismissal procedures. Responsible Behavior in Restrooms Use restrooms appropriately and leave them clean. Put toilet paper in the toilet. Put all other paper in the trash can. Flush the toilet and leave stalls unlocked after use. Wash your hands. Responsible Behavior in Assemblies: Everyone will wait quietly for the program to begin. Quiet talking will be allowed until the program is ready to begin. 9

When the leader goes to the microphone and says, May I have your attention please, everyone will stop talking and look at the person at the microphone. Communicate with the performers with your eyes and ears. Never boo whistle, yell, or put someone down. Students will remain seated quietly until the teacher gives them the signal to stand and follow him/her from the assembly area. 10
