2 Why? Sometimes it's the little, unexpected things that give the young people the biggest sense of achievement. It might be the experiential education, breaking down the barriers of a more formal classroom environment that allows whole classes to bond and be captivated over just one session, the shyest to shine as leaders and the unmotivated to become the most enthusiastic about developing a new skill. We feel passionate about giving these experiences to as many young people as possible. What do we aim to achieve on the trip? Communication Problem solving Resilience Leading and supporting Challenge and risk Self-confidence Motivation Environmental awareness Learning a skill These are some of the areas we aim to develop whilst we are on the trip. Students will be given a log book which they will spend 10 minutes a day recording their activities and what they have learned in terms of new skills and also what they have learned about themselves. Monday 15 th Students will be expected to arrive in school at the normal time and go to form to register. If you would prefer to drop your child and their bags off instead of letting them use the bus this may be more convenient. Bags will be dropped in a classroom to store until we leave. Students will need to bring a packed lunch for their first day. We will have lunch straight after arrival and then check into our accommodation. The first activity of the week will be at 2.30 pm. From arriving at the main gate, Kingswood Dearne Valley site is fully secure.

3 Kingswood Address Denaby Main, Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, DN12 4EA Transport We will be making our way to the Dearne Valley at around am. We will be using a local coach company as our transport provider called Enterprise who are based at Gilberdyke. We will be taking the students to Kingswood on two coaches. Activities Activity sessions will run every day. There will be 5 per day , , , and the evening activity will be from 7.45 till 9 pm. Breakfast will be at 8.30, lunch will be a 2 hour break from till Students will eat their lunch and tidy their accommodation in this 2 hour slot. An award will be given to the best kept accommodation on a daily basis and a flag flown outside the winning lodge for that day. Dinner will be from 5.45 till Students can eat their tea and complete their log book in this time. You will find a timetable of activities at the back of this booklet. Students will be divided into groups of roughly 15 for the activity sessions and these will be mixed forms and gender. Social interaction and building relationships is a key part of this trip and students will be encouraged to mix across the whole year group. All activities are fully risk assessed and provided by Kingwood staff who are fully trained. Each group of 15 students will have both Kingswood and TMWS staff with them during all activities. Accommodation Our staff and students will be staying in adventure lodges. We will have 3 nineteen bed lodges, 2 eleven bed lodges and a staff lodge which sleeps 8. All students will sleep in same sex lodges. Groups will be put together on a form group basis and the students will choose who they share a room with. Rooms are 3 or 4 bedded. The lodges are constructed from timber and canvas. We are hoping for some reasonable weather however they are not heated and we would suggest on a night time some warm sleepwear. A onesie or fleece jumper with warm pyjamas and some fluffy socks would be ideal. Slippers would also be a good idea for wearing in the lodges.

4 Staffing There will be 7 staff on the trip at all times. All staff will sleep in a small staff lodge. Each of the students Lodges will have a Lodge Keeper. This member of staff will be responsible for making sure all students are up in a morning and organised in terms of meal times etc during the day. Any issues from students will be taken to their Lodge Keeper whilst they are away. Three of our staff are fully first aid trained and all Kingswood staff have first aid training, hopefully we will not need this. Communication Kingswood will not take any responsibility for mobile phones or other expensive equipment and neither will The Market Weighton School. There are no sockets in the lodges for charging and no WIFI on site. Staff will be photographing the trip throughout so there will be plenty of photographs for students to enjoy. Photographs will be posted on the school website and on the school Twitter feed during the visit. If we need to get hold of any parents we will do this through our school mobile. If any parents need to get in touch with us or their child they can also do this through the school mobile phone. The school mobile number is This number is to be used in emergencies during out of school hours. If you need to get in touch with your child during school hours please use the school number and a member of staff will contact Staff on the trip If your child needs to be collected early for medical or other reasons we will contact you through the mobile number we have on the school system. Please make sure this is up to date. Medication If your child needs medication issuing on the trip, would you kindly get the medication into school no later than Thursday 11 th May. Please put any medication in a sealed tub with full instructions taped to the tub lid. This will give the staff member in charge time to look at the medications and instructions and sort out any queries before we leave for the trip.

5 Kit list One bath towel Toilet bag containing: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hairbrush etc Night clothes Socks and underwear Four t-shirts, shirts, blouses (at least one with long-sleeves), sweatshirt One thick sweater plus one light sweater Three pairs of trousers and/or jeans and/or tracksuit bottoms Clothes for the Social Sundown (evening entertainment) Waterproof jacket (and trousers if you have them) Sturdy shoes or wellingtons (even in summer) Two pairs of trainers (one old pair) Large plastic bag for dirty clothes Gloves, hat, scarf, if the forecast is for chilly weather Water bottle Hat and sunscreen (in spring and summer) Please send sensible clothing for social times. Casual and nothing too precious. There is a small shop on site which sells sweets and drinks as well as pencils/pens etc. If your child would like to bring some spending money I would recommend 5.00, certainly at the most. Your child will be responsible for this cash. Behaviour I do not envisage any behaviour issues whilst we are at Kingswood. Students at TMWS are fully aware of the expectations from them in terms of behaviour whilst at school and off site. If we do have any behavioural issues they will be sanctioned on the trip. In any extreme cases of bad behaviour, any students whom we feel may jeopardise the success/outcome of the residential trip for their peers will be sent home and parents may be asked to come and collect them. Return to School We will return to school on Friday 19 th May. I anticipate we will be back for 2.45 PM. If you wish to collect your child then you can. This will avoid any trafffic issues when the school busses arrive. Alternatively your child will travel home on the usual Bus service. Any questions?
