5 writing skills Introduction to Journals Lesson Overview Online Composition What Is a Journal? 15 minutes Materials Supplied K 12 My Journal, pp. 2 3 Offline Composition Big Ideas Journal: Write About Yourself 20 minutes Journal writing is a form of freewriting. It is an opportunity to get ideas on paper without regard for correctness of the language or for the format of a piece of writing. To improve, writers require frequent practice. Keywords freewriting a way for a writer to pick a topic and write as much as possible about it within a set time limit journal a notebook where a writer regularly records experiences and ideas journal entry a response to a specific prompt or an instance of recording one s thoughts and experiences writing prompt a sentence or sentences that ask for a particular kind of writing Online 15 minutes Students will work online to learn about journals and journal writing. Help students locate the online activity. Composition What Is a Journal? By exploring what journals are and what purpose they serve, as well as seeing an example of the writing that Johnny does in his journal, students will learn what will be expected of them when they are told to write in their journal. Objectives Recognize a journal prompt. Respond to a journal prompt. Freewrite about a topic. WS 4 Language Arts Purple Copyright 2013, K12 Inc. All rights reserved. 6 writing skills writing skills Offline 20 minutes Have students complete the offline Composition activity. Composition Journal: Write About Yourself Students will respond to a journal prompt by writing about themselves. Gather K 12 My Journal and have students turn to pages 2 and Tell students they are going to write in their journal about themselves and some of the things that are important to them. To help students respond to the prompt, ask them to think about their answers to the following questions. Objectives Recognize a journal prompt. Respond to a journal prompt. Freewrite about a topic. What are some of your favorite things? What are some of your least favorite things? Why? How would someone else describe you? What might that person say about what you are like or the way you behave? What are some of the things that matter most to you? Is it your family? Your friends? Your beliefs or ideas? Is it an activity or a hobby? 2. Have students respond to the prompt in their journal. Remind them to include details about themselves and the things they like, dislike, or consider important. Encourage students to write in complete sentences, although it is not a requirement when they are freewriting in their journal. Also, remind students that their writing will not be graded, so they need not be overly concerned with errors in spelling or mistakes in grammar, usage, or mechanics. Students should write for about 20 minutes. Freewriting allows students to use their imagination to write what they want without worrying about being graded, so encourage them to keep writing for the entire time. If students have trouble writing for 20 minutes, use the prompts in Step 1 or have them list ideas or words. If they want to keep writing beyond 20 minutes, praise them for their enthusiasm and offer to let them complete their entry later in the day as a reward. who Are You? Date Who are you?
