2 RtI or Multi- Tiered System of Supports Response to intervention integrates assessment and intervention within a multi- level prevention system to maximize student achievement and to reduce behavior problems. (Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction) With RTI, schools use data to identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor student progress, provide evidence- based interventions and adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student s responsiveness, and identify students with learning disabilities or other disabilities. (National Center for Response to Intervention) Multi- Tiered System of Supports represents a unified model that integrates academic and behavioral supports recognizing the reciprocal influence that academic performance and social/emotional/behavior performance have on each other. Tier 1 All students receive high quality, scientifically based instruction, differentiated to meet their needs, and are screened on a periodic basis to identify struggling learners who need additional support. Tier 2 Small- group instruction that relies on evidence- based interventions that specify the instructional procedures, duration, and frequency of instruction. RtI Assessment The Basics Term Definition Universal Conducted, usually as a first stage within a screening process, to identify or Screening predict students who may be at risk for poor learning outcomes. Universal screening tests are typically brief; conducted with all students at a grade level; and followed by additional testing or short- term progress monitoring to corroborate students risk status. Progress Monitoring Data- based Decision Making Used to assess students academic performance, to quantify a student rate of improvement or responsiveness to instruction, and to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction. Progress monitoring can be implemented with individual students or an entire class. Different types of decisions can be made with screening and progress monitoring data in order to identify students in need of additional instruction and assessment, evaluate the effectiveness of the core curriculum, allocate resources, evaluate the effectiveness of instruction and interventions for specific populations, and identify students for special education evaluation. 8 Internet Resources for Implementing Tier 2 Reading Rockets Reading Rockets is a national multimedia literacy initiative offering information and resources on how children learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help. Their goal is to bring reading research to life to spread the word about reading instruction and to present "what works" in a way that parents and educators can understand and use. Intervention Central Intervention Central provides teachers, schools and districts with free resources to help struggling learners and implement Response to Intervention and attain the Common Core State Standards. You can create a free account. There are many free tools on the site Specifically check out these FREE tools: The Intervention Planner for Academics is a free online tool that lets educators put together customized academic intervention plans to address reading, writing, and math issues for struggling learners. Once you have created an academic intervention plan, you can download the plan in text or PDF format and even it to others. And if you have a free Intervention Central account, you can also save academic intervention plans that you create online for later retrieval. The Intervention Planner for Behavior is a free application that allows teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to browse a range of strategies to improve student behaviors and to develop customized behavior- management plans for individual students, small groups, or even an entire class. Once you have created a unique behavior plan, you can download the plan in text or PDF format and even it to others. And if you have a free Intervention Central account, you can also save behavior plans that you create online for later retrieval. ChartDog Graph Maker is a free tool for graphing student progress. RtI Action Network The RTI Action Network is dedicated to the effective implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI). The RTI Action Network is a program of the National Center for Learning Disabilities, funded by the Cisco Foundation and in partnership with the nation s leading education associations and top RTI experts. There are many articles about how to implement RtI at various levels and for various content. National Center for Response to Intervention The National Center on Response to Intervention is housed at the American Institutes for Research and works in conjunction with researchers from Vanderbilt University and the University of Kansas. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). Response to Intervention Tier 2 8

The National Center on Response to Intervention has established a standard process to evaluate the scientific rigor of commercially available tools and interventions that can be used in an RTI context. What Works Clearinghouse An initiative of the U.S. Department of Education s Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) was created in 2002 to be a central and trusted source of scientific evidence for what works in education. Click on Find What Works in the top menu. Find ratings for commercial programs for literacy, math, and behavior based on research of effectiveness. Teachers Pay Teachers Teachers Pay Teachers is an open marketplace where teachers buy and sell original teaching materials. There are many free downloadable materials. Membership is free. Search under RtI. Specifically look at the tool called, RtI Made Easy ($5.88) possible tool for a classroom teacher to monitor student progress. The CBM resources also look interesting look for products by Hello Literacy. Be sure to check the user ratings. The Teaching Channel Teaching Channel is a video showcase on the Internet and TV of inspiring and effective teaching practices in America's schools. Registered members trade ideas and share inspiration with each other. The mission is to revolutionize how teachers learn, connect, and inspire each other to improve the outcomes for all K- 12 students across America. National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities NICHCY is the center that provides information to the nation on: disabilities in children and youth programs and services for infants, children, and youth with disabilities IDEA, the nation s special education law research- based information on effective practices for children with disabilities Share My Lesson Share My Lesson is a place where educators can come together to create and share their teaching resources. Developed by teachers for teachers, this free platform gives access to high- quality teaching resources and provides an online community where teachers can collaborate with, encourage and inspire each other. Share My Lesson has a significant resource bank for Common Core State Standards, covering all aspects of the standards, from advice and guides to help with dedicated resources that support the standards. Share My Lesson was developed by the American Federation of Teachers and TES Connect, the largest network of teachers in the world. Response to Intervention Tier 2 9

10 Aimsweb AIMSweb is a commercial benchmark and progress monitoring system based on direct, frequent and continuous student assessment. The results are reported to students, parents, teachers and administrators via a web- based data management and reporting system to determine response to intervention. IRIS Center The IRIS Center for Training Enhancements for free online interactive resources that translate research about the education of students with disabilities into practice, including ten modules on Response to Intervention. DIBELS The DIBELS measures assess the 5 Big Ideas in early literacy identified by the National Reading Panel. Free screening and progress monitoring tools for early literacy. SEDL SEDL is a nonprofit education research, development, and dissemination organization based in Austin, Texas.
