1 March 2018 K wa la nx (Salmonberry Sprouting Season) Check out our website at Principal s Message Gilakas'la Students at Sunset Elementary School have continued to deepen their understanding of First Nations peoples and culture. Ms. Margaret Wilson visited our classes to speak about her experiences at residential school. Our grade 3/4 class has been learning about residential school and was able to deepen their understanding with a more in-depth visit by Ms. Wilson. Our grade 3 class has been comparing the Potlatch and the Pow Wow. They had a day-long celebration of Ojibwe culture which included students sharing what they have learned and culminated with a meal of corn, beans and squash (the three sisters). We continue to make our regalia and are expecting Mrs. Sharon Whonnock to be an ongoing integral part of this. We now have varied sized tunics and sashes sewn and will be adding our designs and buttons this spring. Sunset takes pride in the fact that we are creating our own treasure chest for our students. Dzunukwa is on the minds of some Sunset students. A number of classes are learning about and comparing the stories of her. Some of our younger students are hearing about her for the first time and our older students are re-familiarizing themselves with her legend. I would also like to take this time to acknowledge our First Nations team. Janice Ellis, Shayla Fraser, and Rosalind McKinnley are an innovative, dedicated team that work collaboratively with classroom teachers to create and support opportunities to embed First Nations learning in our classrooms, and bring aspects of Kwakwaka'wakw culture to life in meaningful ways. Some projects they are working on include developing a Lahal team for an upcoming tournament, a field trip using the Galtam canoe, and a feast hosted by our grade one class. 2 Everyone enjoyed the Stone Soup made by Ms. Soltau s & Ms. Lok s Classes A big thank you to Mr. John Bramham and NISS for hosting some of the boys from Sunset. It was great for the boys to get to do wood working at the high school before going over for Grade 8. Please drop in and see our Student Wall of Fame just outside the office. We showcase work from our students monthly from art to academic accomplishments.
3 We had a special guest come to the school to help clean up the garbage and the students loved it. What a fun way to clean up the school yard! Art by Tea Turner

7 Lots of activities were planned this month around the Olympics. We had a school assembly with a flag ceremony for opening day and each class chose a country to represent from the events. There were games and contests including a door decorating contest that Ms. Zydyk s class won. Congratulations! Library Corner We have a lovely new addition to the Learning Commons. We have been gifted a beautiful coffee table made by the talented Anca Fraser. It has made our quiet reading spot complete, with space to showcase some books, and also to store our supply of comfy blankets and afghans. Thank you so much Anca for your contribution toward making our Learning Commons a happy and comfortable place to spend time in. We continue to get new books in on a regular basis, and are anxious to get them into the hands of our students. Thank you to the parents who have been helping us to find and return overdue library books. If you get a printout sent home with your child and are truly unable to find a book, please send the printout back to us with a note to that effect and we will enter the book as lost, so that your child is able to sign out new books. Ms. Olson and I wish one and all a happy and safe spring break.
