1 Southeast Delco School District Knightly News Collingdale Darby Township Folcroft Sharon Hill Communities Volume 2, Issue Academy Park High School Delco Doubles Dominate The Academy Park High School girls varsity volleyball and varsity football teams each won Del Val titles this year. The girls won their second title in three years with a big win over Chichester High School. The boys broke an almost two decade losing streak to its cross town rival Interboro High School. Volleyball coach John Basile and football coach Jason Vosheski expressed their appreciation for the students, teachers, parents, and fans that expressed their support in person and via . These championships are only two of the many victories the students and staff will experience this year and will help set The Park on course for greater things! The school looks forward to many championships in the future from these and other sports. Go Knights! 1

She came up with the fabulous idea of setting up an Alex s Lemonade Stand in her classroom for a week, which was open to students and staff during lunch breaks. Thanks to Mrs. Rowe s resourcefulness the 2 nd grade students received applied Math lessons and raised money for a worthy cause. Mrs. Rowe s 2 nd Grade Class Mrs. Preston s 4 th Grade Class Canned Food Drive Helps Local Families in Need Darby Township School participated in a canned food drive during the month of November. Students and staff collected over 1,700 cans that were then donated to First African Baptist Church. Mrs. Preston s 4 th grade class was recognized for collecting the most items with a total of 270 cans. DTS Book Fair The DTS Book Fair was once again a great success. On the opening day of the fair DTS Home & School hosted a Grandparent s Breakfast. Students invited their grandparents to attend the breakfast and browse through the books for sale and maybe purchase one for their grandchild. The last day of the Book Fair was open to the community. 2

3 DTS Students Compete at District Science Fair The District Science Fair took place on November 28 th in the auditorium of Academy Park High School. Several DTS students presented their science projects to be judged for qualification at the state level. Togba Porte, an 8 th grade student is a finalist for the State level Science Fair. Students that also presented their projects included 6 th graders Zahiir Austin, Sequora Stankiewicz, and Bailey O Neill, 7 th graders Ciana Coston and Kaleigh Cervino, and 8 th graders Togba Porte, Elisha Hernandez, and Caitlin Gray. Winter Celebrations The month of brings in the holiday spirit at DTS and it all starts with the Winter Wonderland on 8 th. Staff, students, parents, and community members are invited to this event along with holiday activities from 12: 00 to 4: 00 PM. Darby Township School will present its Winter Concert on 12 th at 7: 00 PM. Mrs. Manko Morgan and Mrs. Cubbage are putting together a wonderful program that will showcase the musical talents of their students. Upcoming Darby Township School Events 12/06 12/12 Winter Wonderland 12:00 PM 4:00 PM National Geographic Bee Grades 6 8 Winter Concert 7 PM Delcroft School Thanksgiving Baskets Delcroft School Safety Patrol collected canned foods and nonperishable items for local families in our community. Each homeroom participated in a contest during the month of November. Mr. McDonough s 3 rd grade class won first place and received a pizza party for collecting the most canned goods. Delcroft staff donated 15 turkeys and students collected over 391 items for baskets. Baskets were provided to 15 local families for Thanksgiving. Delcroft Expectations Congratulations to Ms. Eileen Maher s 5 th grade homeroom for becoming the first homeroom to win a class reward for filing their classroom jar with rocks!! Each homeroom at Delcroft School has a jar 3

4 in the front display case. When homerooms are caught following Delcroft Expectations they receive a rock. Once a homeroom has the entire jar filled they are rewarded with a party of their choice. Several homerooms are following close behind with only a few rocks needed to fill their jars. Keep up the good work! Hats, Scarves, Gloves, and Mittens Delcroft Student Council is currently collecting scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for any student who is in need. If you would like to donate any items please send them with a Delcroft student or drop donations off at the Delcroft main office. This year Mrs. Criscuolo, Delcroft School Nurse arranged for students to receive additional winter coats; ensuring that all students had warm coats for the upcoming months. Many thanks to her for her dedication and hard work! Upcoming Delcroft School Events National Geographic Bee Grades 6 8 Harris School Harris Season of Giving Harris School held its 4 th Annual Turkey Bowl on Tuesday November 20 th. The Turkey Bowl is a flag football game that pits a team of confident 8 th graders against a wily team of veteran staff members. The game is an event the whole school looks forward to each November. The gym was packed with students, parents, and faculty who were all there for a good time. While the game is an 8 th grade rite of passage at Harris School it also offers an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. This year, with the sale of Turkey Bowl T shirts, Jean Day, and snacks sold at the game, over $300 was raised for the Veterans Home in Philadelphia. 4

5 As for the actual game, this year s eighth graders gave the Harris staff the biggest challenge they in Turkey Bowl history. The game was a back and forth affair, with high energy and plenty of sweat but when the dust settled Harris staff defended their title on a game ending goal line stand. The eighth graders fought hard and showed great sportsmanship, accepting the lost with grace. When the game was over and the handshaking completed the 7 th graders in attendance took the opportunity to start the hype for next year s game. From the sounds of next year s eighth grade team they are very confident about stopping the staff s 4 game winning streak. Guess we ll see what happens next year. Stay tuned. From Turkey Bowl to Turkey Baskets In addition to the Turkey Bowl, the Harris community collected food for local families in need. Under the direction of second grade teacher Daniel Ruane, Harris was able to collect enough canned goods and Turkeys to ensure that over 30 Harris families were able to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast. Canned and boxed non perishable food items were collected for a couple of weeks prior to Thanksgiving and with donations from staff enough money was raised to buy turkeys to complete the feast. Baskets were assembled on Monday, November 19 th by a team of students and staff members. In all 32 Thanksgiving meals were organized and ready for delivery. The spirit of giving is alive and well at Harris School. Upcoming Harris School Events 12/13 National Geographic Bee Grades 6 8 Winter Concert 7 PM Sharon Hill School First Marking Period Awards Assembly First Marking Period awards assemblies were held on November 27 th and 28 th. Students were recognized for Perfect Attendance, Citizenship, and Academic Excellence. Students were excited to be recognized among their peers for their hard work and achievements. Sharon Hill School Science Fair The Sharon Hill School Science Fair was held on November 15 th. Students in grades 6 8 completed science projects for entry in the fair. The top 10 entries from each grade level were graded and selected by science teachers, Ms. Garnett and Mr. Spencer. Advanced placement chemistry students from Academy Park High School assisted in judging the entries. The winners of the school fair participated in the district fair on November 28 th. 5

6 Upcoming Sharon Hill School Events 12/18 National Geographic Bee Grades 6 8 Winter Concert 6 PM Kindergarten Center Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast On November 21 st, all Kindergarten students participated in special activities in celebration of Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving Feast is a culminating event related to the social studies curriculum unit, Stories from the Past. The instruction included learning about the start of our Thanksgiving traditions and how those traditions have changed. Children also explored the themes of friendship, family, and sharing in their lessons. Classroom activities included learning various related sight words, reading and discussing the culture of the original settlers and natives, and applying math concepts, such as shapes. Children also learned to follow patterns by creating their own headwear Pilgrim hats, and Native American feather bands. 6

7 During the festivities the children enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast of juice and trail mix, which many were able to assemble independently.
