1 FACILITIES Issue 3 Facilities Spring 2016 BUILDING NEW SCHOOL FACILITIES IN THIS ISSUE Improving our school buildings and grounds In this edition of the newsletter are updates on the following projects: New Schools On November 2 nd, the Board of Education voted to award the contract to First Floor Energy Positive, LLC. Construction begins. Modifications to our Facilities Let us Help! 2 FACILITIES Issue 3 2 Horry County Schools is building 5 new schools Family Learning Center has temporarily relocated to the campus of HGTC. Demolition and abatement began April 5 th, and is now complete. The foundation is being installed. Current budget $46,485,102. New Middle School (6-8) for Socastee Attendance Area The Board has selected the Design-Build method of project delivery for our five new schools. In the Design-Build method, an Architect / Contractor team is selected to see the building through completion. On November 2nd, the Board of Education voted to award the contract for all 5 new schools to First Floor Energy Positive, LLC. Construction has begun on the new schools. completed with approximately 1,100 piles installed. Current budget $47,742,333. New Middle School (6-8) for Carolina Forest Attendance Area Site is owned and is located off of Carolina Forest Boulevard. The project includes a new 170,918 SF, 2-story middle school for 1,200 student capacity. Foundations are complete, portions of exterior walls and steel framing are being erected in the classroom wing area of the building toward the dining area. Site work pond excavation has begun. Current budget $45,930,227. A site has been selected and the due diligence evaluation work is in progress. The property purchase was closed on June 1, An early entry agreement was also signed by the District and the land owner permitting access to the site prior to final land closing to commence limited work including mobilization, clearing and certain site work within the access corridor. The site is located off of U.S. 17 Bypass and Esso Road. The project includes a new 150,000 SF, 2-story middle school for 800 student capacity. Current budget $42,488,116. Replacement of Socastee Elementary School Site is owned by HCS, located on Highway 707 in Socastee at Luttie Road. The project includes a new 120,230 SF, 2-story elementary school for 916 student capacity. The building pad and installation of pilings are complete. Excavation of retention pond at the rear of the site and construction of the access road have begun. Current budget $37,953,991. New Intermediate School - St. James area New Middle School - Carolina Forest area New Intermediate School (5-6) for St. James Attendance Area Site is owned by HCS and is located on the campus of Burgess Elementary. The project includes a new 170,918 SF, 2-story intermediate school for 1200 student capacity. The building pad fill is completed. The timber piling has been New Middle School (6-8) for Myrtle Beach Attendance Area Site is owned by HCS, located at the corner of 29th Ave. N. and Oak Street. 3 FACILITIES Issue 3 3 Modifications to our Facilities Has someone offered to donate funds to you for a special project? Are you seeking a grant for modification or improvement to your facilities? Facilties can help you avoid costly mistakes or oversight by reviewing your project with you. We have a form that can accomplish this called a Request to Build/Modify Facilities, or an RTM form. (link in box at right) This form must be submitted to our Planning Department prior to the initiation of fund raising or grant applications. There are many code restrictions, zoning laws and other regulations that affect facility modifications. Also, proper identification of location of hidden or underground utilities must be done. We can help you navigate these sometimes confusing waters and assure your project can be accomplished successfully. Let us help! REQUEST TO MODIFY FORM 2XLwi_/6d691e9e0ae2c a e c4/hcs_request_to_build- Modify_Facilities_Form.pdf Loop Roads and Bus Lot St. James Elementary, Middle & High St. James Middle School Parent Drop off lane The loop roads for St. James Elementary and St. James Middle schools are being redesigned to alleviate traffic and safety problems along Hwy 707. The project includes a new loop road and transportation bus lot at St. James Elementary and St. James Middle schools to provide traffic storage for up to 200 vehicles at each Drop off and Pick up. A 3 rd lane will be added to the existing loop road at St. James High School to also improve emergency access. St. James High current 2 lane loop entrance

4 FACILITIES Issue 3 4 Electronic Message Boards Electronic message centers were installed at several high schools and two academies: Aynor High School Academy for Arts, Science & Technology Academy for Technology and Academics Carolina Forest High School Loris High School Socastee High School St. James High School Construction was completed in March AAST MESSAGE BOARD All high schools and two academies will now have electronic message signs. Conway High School Athletic Track Athletic improvements at Conway High School will include: Repaving and striping the existing track Relocating the jump events Adding pole vault area Installation of drainage New track lighting

5 FACILITIES Issue 3 5 Maintaining our Schools HARD TO SEE CHANGES Not all of the projects that are done are noticeable when you approach the school. Several of the projects that are underway at our schools are on the roof or in the walls or above the ceiling. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Also called HVAC, the equipment that keeps us cool in the summer and warm in the winter needs to be maintained. Currently four schools are in the process of being upgraded and more are in the plans. Green Sea Floyds High, Loris High and Seaside Elementary schools are all under construction for improved HVAC systems. These schools will be completed by the end of the school year. Selection of contractors for Aynor Elementary, Forestbrook Elementary, St. James Elementary, St. James Middle and South Conway Elementary is underway. Window Replacements Replacement of existing windows has been completed at 5 schools. Windows were replaced prior to the start of school at St. James Middle School, St. James Elementary School and Conway Middle School. Repairs and replacement of windows at Carolina Forest High School and Green Sea Floyds High School were completed after school hours during the fall. Caulking and Sealing As you know from your own home, keeping the caulking and sealing around windows, doors and other exterior joints tight and water resistant is important. A project is well underway to replace the sealants at 27 schools across the district. The schools have been prioritized into three lots to better schedule the overall project. Lot 1 is completed, which included: Conway High School Conway Middle School Homewood Elementary School South Conway Elementary School Socastee High School St. James Elementary School St. James High School St. James Middle School Whittemore Park Middle School Loris High School The second lot of schools is nearing completion. Carolina Forest High School Forestbrook Elementary School Forestbrook Middle School Myrtle Beach High School Myrtle Beach Intermediate School Myrtle Beach Primary School Ocean Bay Elementary School Ocean Bay Middle School Palmetto Bays Elementary School The third lot of schools, to be scheduled soon are: Aynor High School Aynor Middle School Academy for Technology and Academics Daisy Elementary School Green Sea Floyds Elementary School Green Sea Floyds High School Kingston Elementary School North Myrtle Beach High School The primary focus of these projects is to improve the indoor air quality in our facilities. By keeping moisture out and then removing humidity from within, the overall quality of the learning environment is improved and the longevity of the building is extended. Air conditioning Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning upgrades Windows Replacing windows Caulking and Sealing Sealing the exterior of the building against water intrusion.

6 FACILITIES Issue 3 6 Keep Safe at Home and at School Recently, in cooperation with Horry Electric Cooperative, recently retired HCS Facilities electrician Hilbert A Best demonstrates why it is crucial that electrical linemen have clear access to the green boxes that contain underground service transformers. There s enough voltage inside a green box to kill a person, so remember: Never enclose the transformer with fencing, shrubs or anything else with less than a 10 foot wide gate or opening Never place anything that gets closer than 10 feet from the front or 4 feet from the sides of the transformer To work at the transformer, we may need to remove obstructions. For safety, do not replace obstructions. Before you dig anywhere in your yard, call the Palmetto Utility Protection Service at 811 to find out where the cables are buried. School s Out for Summer The time has arrived and Alice Cooper s unforgettable words are true, once again, and we need to prepare for Summer cleaning. Before you leave for the summer, please remember the following: Empty all refrigerators Unplug refrigerators and leave the door open Remove personal valuables from the classroom. Turn off and unplug all computers, monitors and other devices.
