PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Dear Parents and Students, I hope everyone was able to enjoy some quality time over our St Luke s extended long weekend. The magnificent weather was in keeping with the wonderful lifestyle we enjoy in WA. Mr Kelly spent the day with us last Thursday and was introduced to the children at our O Connor house faction assembly. He is very much looking forward to joining the St Luke s community and leading the continuing progress we are making as a school. Thank you to parents and staff for your assistance and cooperation with school photos this week. Mrs Menchetti, in particular, has done a super job scheduling the photos around other school events, ensuring class interruptions are kept to a minimum. Some of our students represented our school at the catholic schools Lifelink forum today at Newman College. Lifelink supports the many catholic service agencies that help those less fortunate in our community. Our school s specific support is with the Daydawn Advocacy Centre where we are asking families to donate good condition pre-loved or new toys to be distributed to indigenous children of families experiencing severe hardship in our community. 2 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE continued.. A representative will visit school at assembly on Friday 16 th June to collect donations. Children can bring the toys direct to their classrooms or they can be left in the office foyer at school. For further information about the Daydawn Advocacy, please visit the following link This Friday our senior students will be involved in the catholic schools winter carnival. Students will be involved in football, boys and girls soccer and netball. Good luck to all children representing St Luke s on Friday. Information about this day is listed later in the newsletter. To all the children involved with the Father & Son camp this weekend, look after your dads and have a great time. No joy for the Dockers or the Eagles over the weekend. Eagles are able to lick their wounds with a week off but Dockers have to front up again, albeit against a struggling Brisbane. No confidence! Playground supervision before and after school Parents are reminded that there is no playground supervision before school commences or after school concludes. Supervision of children in the undercover area commences at 8.10am in the morning and concludes when classrooms are opened at 8.25am. At the end of the day I have noticed some children playing on the fixed playground equipment without any direct supervision from parents. Please understand that the fixed play equipment adjacent to the main grassed area of the school is unsuitable for play with very small children or without direct parent supervision. Be happy and enjoy the coming week. David Hunter Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL S MESSAGES PAGE 2 End of Term Farewell Mass Mr Hunter We would like to invite all the parents in our community to the end of term mass on Wednesday 28 th June. This will be a chance to give thanks as a school community to the successes we have enjoyed over the term. It is also the final, official mass to farewell Mr Hunter into retirement. After 8 years of service to our community, it will give us the opportunity to express our gratitude and bless Mr Hunter for his future endeavours. We would love to see as many of our community attend as possible. Date: Wednesday 28 th June Time: 9:00am Place: St Luke s Parish Year 3 Celebratory Assembly The Year 3 assembly will be held on Wednesday 28 th June at 1:40pm in the covered area. This assembly will have a farewell theme and will give us the chance as a school to celebrate with Mr Hunter on his retirement in a relaxed and fun environment. Again, all members of our school community are warmly encouraged to attend. Date: Wednesday 28 th June Time: 1:40pm Place: Covered Area *Following the assembly, the P & F have organised an afternoon tea in the dance room for parents to share a cuppa and say their goodbyes to Mr Hunter. This will be for adults only as children will return to class after the assembly. 3 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL S MESSAGES continued Lifelink PAGE 3 Today, LifeLink was officially launched at Newman College Auditorium. The Archbishop streamed his launch of Lifelink live and Mr Scattini, myself and 3 of our student councillors were in attendance, along with representatives from all Catholic schools in the Perth Diocese for the Let s Open Our Hearts to People in Need theme. We proudly contributed 460 hearts with messages from the children at St Luke s. It was a wonderful experience enjoyed by our student council representatives. Daydawn Advocacy Centre - Toy Drive ONE MORE WEEK FOR DONATIONS TO COME IN! This year, St Luke s will once again be supporting the Daydawn Advocacy Centre which is a Lifelink associated agency. As part of their charter, they collect various items for those in need. Last year we had an overwhelming response from our community for donations, so once again we will be asking for your support. We are once again holding a Toy Drive and asking children and parents to bring in a NEW or WELL CONDITIONED PRE-LOVED toy. On Friday 16th June, a representative from Daydawn will be coming to school to collect the donations and share their appreciation at an assembly. TO CELEBRATE DAYDAWN AND LIFELINK FRIDAY 16 th JUNE WILL BE A FREE-DRESS DAY FOR A GOLD COIN DONATION TO LIFELINK! Thank you to everyone who has paid their fees in full or is making regular payments to cover their fees account. 4 NOTICES FROM MR NOSEDA - PE COORDINATOR PAGE 4 Dear Parents, We are running a Cross Country Event for the whole school for the Cross Country Trophy based on Faction results. This will be on Thursday June 15 th at school. The children will be running the same distances as the Interschool Event to be held at Mawson Park on Friday June 23 rd and State Cross Country on Friday August 11 th, events in which we participate. The Year 1 to Year 4 classes will run from 9.00am to 10.40am. The Year 5 and Year 6 classes will run between 11.00am and 1.00pm. The following timetable setting out distances will give you a guide to the children s race times. 5 PAGE 5 Friday, 9 th June 2017 YEAR 5 /6 WINTER INTERSCHOOL SPORTS This year the Interschool Sports Carnival is on Friday 9th June. This day has been mainly for Year Six students but we have endeavoured to include Year Fives this year. The sports they will be playing are football, girls and boys soccer and netball. The venues for each sport are below. Sport's uniforms, this means blue sports shirts not graduation shirts, must be worn and the students must have their own drinks and food for the day. Mouthguards are necessary for football players. Netball players are permitted to wear their team uniform. The Interschool Carnival is an all-day event with the students leaving school by bus at 9.10 am. The final game will be done by 2.00pm and we will return by bus to school then. We will have help from various people for this carnival and the umpires are High School Students from Mater Dei College. Parents are welcome to come along and support our school. All Year 3-6 students are welcome to attend. The choir is now preparing for the First Holy Communion masses (17th/18th June). Youth Group Thank you to everyone who attended the youth group get together last Friday night. The date of the next meeting will be advised in next week's newsletter. Family Mass Our next Family Mass is on Sunday, 30th July at 9.30am.
