A special welcome to our new Year 7 students who have impressed us all with how quickly they have found their way around the school building and have settled into life and learning at Causeway. We have been very busy already this term with special events and enrichment activities having hosted a wonderful Scholarship Evening, Post 16 Evening, International Day of Peace, National Fitness Day and European Day of Languages! I look forward to meeting you at one of our many events in the coming weeks including our Open Evening on Tuesday 2nd October for prospective parents and students, and Year 10 Consultation Evening on Thursday 11th October. Best wishes Liza Leung Headteacher Celebration on Results Day We were delighted with the achievements of our Year 11 students, who sat a higher number of mainly exam based papers with new and more challenging content across all subjects. We are so very proud of our students who worked really hard and thoroughly deserve our congratulations; we made the front page of the Herald on results day for the second year running! Students celebrating top grades include Jack Walker with a set of ten 9 to 7 grades, Ryan Hopkins and Cameron Southgate who achieved ten 8 to 6 grades. Jack was awarded the highest possible grade 9 for both Chemistry and Biology and Ryan achieved a grade 8 in six subjects. Other high flyers include Cerys James, Jamie Brito, Melissa Dolan, Jordan Hall, Holly James, George Phillips, Reece Swan-Allnutt and Ella Tucker who all achieved 10 GCSEs including grades 7 and 8. A special mention for Nadine Simoes- Mendico for making the most progress in the year group. 2 Phone Policy Welcome New Year 7 Students 7C 7A Our no mobile phone policy, introduced last academic year, has had a truly positive impact on learning and engagement across the school. Students are welcome to bring their phones to school as long as they are switched off and out of sight, in their bags or lockers. Thank you to all parents and carers for your support which has helped us to create a better learning environment for our students. A reminder that phones which are not off and away will be confiscated and stored in the school safe for parents to collect at the end of the school day. Year 10 Work Experience All Year 10 students have received their log-in and password details from their tutors to access their choices on-line. Students will be notified once their placement is confirmed via to their school account, so keep an eye out for these! Please also remember to return the medical forms to Ms Newton as soon as possible in the Learning Hub. 7U 7S Our new Year 7 students have made a fantastic start to their academic career at Causeway. Students started their first day with their tutors getting to know their new class and were also introduced to the opportunities which are on offer from East Sussex County Council s schools music service. Students were treated to some live music in their first assembly! We have been so impressed with Year 7 finding their way around the school, engaging with their learning, making new friends and trying out new clubs. Well done to all Year 7s, you ve made a brilliant start. Post 16 Evening Our Post 16 Evening took place on Thursday 20 September attended by various local Post 16 organisations providing additional support and information for further and higher education. Our thanks to: YES, Heathercroft Training, DV8, East Sussex College Group, Bexhill College, Plumpton College, NCS, University of Brighton, Sussex University and Gildredge House 6 th Form. Students and families had a great opportunity to discuss courses and entry grades, and gather information about applications. Our closing date for applications is Friday 30 November. Please note that the on-line system, UCAS, does not go live until early October. We wish all Year 11 students luck in choosing their courses which they will be supported with during tutor time. As the recent letter distributed advises, it is not always possible to place students at their choices for various reasons, meaning flexibility may be required.

3 International Day of Peace The United Nations' International Day of Peace is annually held on September 21 to recognise the efforts of individuals, organisations and governments to end conflict and promote peace. It was established in 1981 by the United Nations who called for all nations to observe a day of global ceasefire and non-violence and people everywhere to honour the banning of hostilities throughout the day. Around the world schools, businesses and homes held events to mark the occasion and show their support. As a school community we lit candles in our Amphitheatre as a symbol that we support Peace Day and created our own Wall of Peace with global and personal messages of peace. Year 11 Scholarship Evening Our annual Year 11 Scholarship Evening took place on Thursday 13 September. It was well attended by some of our most capable Year 11 students with their families. Bedes and Eastbourne College gave interesting presentations that motivated our students into considering not just the obvious, but also more challenging routes they are potentially able to follow. Rugby union is a game for All Schools everyone can play it and every school can teach it. The CBRE All Schools Rugby Programme has been developed by the RFU to increase the amount of rugby in schools, and to encourage new players. CBRE All Schools, launched in September 2012, aims to increase the number of secondary state schools playing rugby union. From 2012 rugby is being taken into 750 state secondary schools with the aim of making school life happier and healthier, reducing anti-social behaviour, enhancing learning and increasing self-esteem for students. In partnership with the Rugby Football Foundation they aim to create a positive legacy for 1 million children through rugby and its core values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship. As part of a three year programme Causeway School is receiving support through coaching, kit & equipment, training & CPD and competition to help develop the PE curriculum and the schools enrichment programme. Rugby enrichment takes place after school from 3pm till 4pm every Wednesday and it is open to all years and abilities. KS3 Maths Catch-up F14 the Maths Dept KS4 Maths Catch up F16 the Maths Dept Year 7 Inter Tutor Group Football Tournament Well done to all Year 7 teams, a great response to the inter-tutor competition with all tutor groups entering a team. Six teams entered and 52 students lined up to compete. This is a great way for all our new Year 7s to get to know each other. These matches will take place over the next few weeks with our grand final being played at the end of term. Matches will be played at lunchtime for which dates will be circulated to tutor groups nearer the time.
