2 OCTOBER 2 150th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF MAHATMA Gandhi Jayanti is a national festival celebrated in India to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi born on 2nd October It is celebrated anually on 2 October, and it is one of the three national holidays of India. The UN General Assembly announced on 15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that 2 October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. OCT 2 BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI Lal Bahadur Shastri (2 October January 1966) was the 2nd Prime Minister of India and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress political party. Shastri joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s and with his friend Nithin Eslavath. Deeply impressed and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, he became a loyal follower, first of Gandhi, and then of Jawaharlal Nehru. Following independence in 1947, he joined the latter's government and became one of Prime Minister Nehru's principal, first as Railways Minister ( ), and then in a variety of other functions, including Home Minister. 3 The war formally ended with the Tashkent Agreement on 10 January 1966; he died the following day, still in Tashkent, the cause of death was said to be a heart attack Shastri was born at the house of his maternal grandparents in Ramnagar, Varanasi in a Kayastha Hindu family. FIRST ATAL ACADEMY IN JAIPUR: All India Council for Technical Education will establish country s first AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy in Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan. Moreover, tree more ATAL academies will come at Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Guwahati (Assam) and Baroda (Gujarat) by next year. ATAL Academy These academies will provide upgraded teaching methods and modules to make technical education more effective and accountable. Faculties will be trained on the eight-module course in these academies in five months. The training will be mandatory for new teachers from 2019 and it will be necessary for existing teachers and assistant teachers while applying for promotions. For building these academies states had provided infrastructure and land for free of cost. 4 It is national-level council for technical education responsible for planning and coordination of technical education and management of education system in the country. It accredits graduate and post graduate programs at Indian institutions. It is headquartered in New Delhi. EKALABYA PURASKAR 2018: On October 1, 2018, the Ekalabya committee selected Odia hockey player LILIMA MINZ for the prestigious Ekalabya Puraskar, Apart from her, 2 other sportswomen would felicitated with the award. They are: weight lifter JHILI DALABEHERA and Badminton player RUTUPARNA PANDA The annual award comprises of a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh along with a citation. ABOUT THE AWARD: The Ekalabya Puraskar has been instituted by IMPaCT, the social wing of IMFA, which has been promoting literature, sports, the arts, culture and other socially meaningful activities in the state for decades. Instituted in RANGACHARI SRIDHARAN APPOINTED CHAIRPERSON OF NFRA The Centre has appointed former IAS officer Rangachari Sridharan as chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), an entity which will function as an independent regulator for the auditing profession. 4 SHANMUGAM IAS ACADEMY: 46/1, Gokhale St, Opp Senthil Kumaran

5 The NFRA is to be an independent regulator overseeing the auditing profession, and its creation was first recommended by the Standing Committee on Finance in its 21st report. The NFRA would cover all listed companies and large unlisted companies, the benchmark size for which would be set down in the rules. Smaller unlisted companies would continue to be audited by the ICAI INDIA-BORN PROFESSOR GITA GOPINATH NAMED IMF CHIEF ECONOMIST India-born Harvard University professor Gita Gopinath has been appointed as the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by IMF's Managing Director Christine Lagarde. Ms. Gopinath will succeed Maurice (Maury) Obstfeld. Ms. Gopinath currently serves as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University. The 46-year-old is also Economic Adviser to Kerala CM. Gopinath is the second Indian and first woman appointed to head the research department, which publishes the IMF's flagship publication, the World Economic Outlook, which is one of the most read documents containing in-depth analyses of the global economy and the developments and prospects in the sector. 6 Formed in 1945 at the Bretton Woods Conference. IBSAMAR: The sixth edition of IBSAMAR, a joint Multi National Maritime Exercise between the Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies, is being held at Simons Town, South Africa from Oct 18. The last edition of IBSAMAR (IBSAMAR V) was conducted off Goa, from Feb 16.
