2 Welcome Lady Margaret School provides its students with an outstanding standard of education. Ofsted Welcome to Lady Margaret School. It is a great privilege to be Headteacher of this fantastic school, and I am proud to lead a team of talented and dedicated professionals who offer a challenging and enriching education to our pupils. Lady Margaret School is a Church of England Academy for girls aged in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. We welcome girls of all academic abilities, and we are committed to ensuring that our school community is one in which every girl can excel. Our success is based on a culture of high expectations and aspirations, excellent standards of teaching and a strong commitment to our Christian ethos as a Church of England Academy. The school offers both strong pastoral support and intellectual challenge at every key stage, enabling our girls to learn to think independently and creatively and to develop into resilient and confident learners. Our curriculum is supported by a strong programme of extra-curricular activities that helps girls to develop a wide range of skills and interests. Lady Margaret School is a community of great energy and enthusiasm. It is also a community driven by Christian values, and we place great importance on girls behaving with integrity and with kindness. Our motto is I have a goodly heritage. 3 The School Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent. Ofsted Lady Margaret School is a Church of England School for Girls aged The School gained Academy status in September It is a comprehensive school in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. From 2014 it has become a permanent 4 Form Entry School with approximately 180 girls in the Sixth Form. The School started life in 1917 in the oldest of the three houses facing Parsons Green, now Belfield House. It was named after the Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, founder of St John s and Christ s Colleges, Cambridge. Our buildings comprise three listed Georgian houses which look on to Parsons Green. These houses link to the rest of the teaching accommodation which includes 11 new classrooms opened in At the rear of the main house is a small garden adjacent to the School Hall and Gymnasium. The Olivier Centre, at the rear of the site, opened in 2010 offering bespoke facilities for ICT and Music and dedicated study space for the Sixth Form. The school is close to Parsons Green tube station on the District line and a number of bus routes. 4 Our Ethos Students respectful behaviour is a consistent feature at Lady Margaret School. Ofsted The ethos of the school is that of a caring and purposeful Christian community. Each member of the community is made aware of the high standards of behaviour and work which are expected. Staff and pupils are expected to show kind, respectful and tolerant attitudes to others both inside and outside the classroom. The school rules regarding issues such as uniform and homework are enforced and parents are expected to support the school in these areas. As a Church of England school, we believe that worship is central to the daily life of the school. It affirms our identity and reinforces the Christian values of our school. The programme of collective worship within the school is planned and co-ordinated by our Chaplain to provide whole school worship on three days of the week and form-based or year group worship on two days of the week. Our worship reminds us of our beliefs and hopes, reinforces our corporate identity, provides a focal point which gives the community and the individuals in it an understanding of the shape, meaning and purpose of their lives. Pupils in all year groups are encouraged to contribute to the wider life of the school and to participate in or set up extra-curricular clubs and activities. A Special Activities Week in the Summer term sees girls in Key Stage 3 participate in visits and activities at home and abroad, often drawing praise from the public for their behaviour and attitude. 7 Our Sixth Form Students describe the school as a family in which everyone belongs. Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools We have our own well-established Sixth Form, providing a wide range of A Level courses. Sixth Form girls do not wear school uniform and have their own Informal Study Area (with a kitchen) and private study areas in the Olivier Centre. The senior girls play a considerable part in extra-curricular activities, acting as prefects and hostesses. Modern Language students are encouraged to spend time in France or Spain to improve their language skills and Geography students undertake field work in Britain or further afield. There are many visits to universities, museums, art galleries and theatres so that students can take advantage of the cultural and academic opportunities on offer in London. 8 Curriculum At Key Stage 3, all pupils study English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Drama, French, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Spanish and Technology. Girls have weekly lessons in Personal, Social and Health Education, Citizenship and Work Related Learning. From time to time the normal timetable is collapsed for a day to allow time to focus on a particular theme or event. The aim of the curriculum is not only to teach core subjects, but to encourage our girls to become independent learners who can eventually take responsibility for their own learning. An emphasis is placed on thinking skills, collaborative working and research skills, as well as on hard work and creativity. Extra-curricular Activities All girls are encouraged to get involved in extra-curricular activities. Many of these are linked to house competitions such as Science, Music, Sport, Art, Drama and Technology. Some clubs are led by senior girls and some by members of staff. In Key Stage 3 all girls participate in an Activities Week where they have opportunities for residential visits in Britain or further afield or to participate in London based activities such as Science Week, Art Week or Theatre. Pastoral Care Girls are divided into form groups of 30. In the Sixth Form, there are around 16 students registered together in groups. Each Form Tutor and Head of Year monitors the academic progress of pupils in their care, as well as providing pastoral support. The quality of care, support and guidance given to the girls is a strength of the school and is regularly commented on by both our pupils and their parents. Careers Education Careers education and guidance work related learning are an important part of the curriculum and are integrated into the PSHE programme in Years Heads of Year work closely with external agencies to ensure all pupils have access to appropriate current careers advice. The school has a well-resourced careers section in the library plus computers with careers software and access to the Internet which pupils can use. Information on Higher Education is provided and Sixth Form students are given considerable encouragement, support and guidance regarding their choice of course and university, as well as help with completing application forms. Library and ICT Resources The Library provides a resource centre for the entire school community. The Library supports the curriculum for all pupils from their entry in Year 7 up to, and including, A Level and it also provides materials to enrich the cultural, spiritual, emotional and social lives of the girls. The library has 22 networked computers and 20 laptops all with internet access. To help this provision, the library is open at all times to all girls for study, reading, borrowing and returning books and other resources. During the official Library hours of 8.00am until 4.30pm, a professional Librarian is available to help the girls. Two ICT rooms with 40 computers in each are also available for use by all pupils before and after school and during the lunch break. Meeting Special Educational Needs We have a small Special Educational Needs Department led by our SENCO. In Year 7-9 girls with statements and Educational and Health Care Plans spend most of their time with their form group of 30 helped by Learning Support Assistants. 10 2 2017: Our Centenary Year I have a goodly heritage Lady Margaret School was founded in 1917 and last year we marked our Centenary. The school opened in 1917 under the Headship of Miss Enid Moberly Bell. She had been Senior Assistant Mistress of a small school based in Whitelands College, a teacher training college for women located in Chelsea. Whitelands College decided to close down their school, and Miss Moberly Bell, together with support from the Bishop of Kensington among others, opened Lady Margaret School in Belfield House on Parsons Green in September The school is named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII. Since then the school has seen many changes, and last year we had the chance to celebrate all that we love about the school. We marked our School Birthday at the end of September with a special service in St. Dionis Church as we always do. We held our Birthday Party on Saturday 30 September. This was a chance for former students and current students, family and friends to visit the school to celebrate our Centenary. We took the whole school to Westminster Abbey on Tuesday 17 October, which was a wonderful opportunity to gather the whole school together to give thanks for our goodly heritage. An important part of our centenary celebrations was our charity work. Every year the girls vote for the school charity for the year ahead. Last year we asked the girls to suggest charities which focus on improving education and opportunities for girls across the world. We are conscious of the great gift of our goodly heritage at LMS and our charity work is an important way of thinking about how we 7 can create such a heritage for others.
