1 Term 2, Week 1, 12th April, 2016 Principal s Message Dear Parents & Carers, WELCOME BACK EVERYONE It was wonderful to see all our students return today. By all accounts the holidays were enjoyed by all with many interesting adventures and tales to share. We have commenced our longest term 11 weeks - and it will be very busy and exciting for us all. Some of the highlights of the term are: APRIL 14 CROSS COUNTRY 22 ANZAC Assembly 25 ANZAC DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY 25 P & F Chip Stall at the Races in Wondai Cross Country Thursday 14th April ANZAC Day Celebrations School Assembly 22nd April South Burnett Representative Sports Trials Edmund Rice Feast and Sorry Day Sports Day 16 and 17 June Parent Teacher Interviews This term students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in NAPLAN testing. I have included some information which may assist parents in gaining a greater understanding of this assessment process. The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. Why do students do NAPLAN tests? NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and what areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of a school s assessment and reporting process. They do not replace the extensive ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student s performance.

2 Principal s Message continued Welcome We welcome Mrs Carmel Hunter to the staff of St Joseph s. Mrs Hunter will replace Mr Mulcahy in Year 4 for Terms 3 and 4. Mrs Hunter comes to St Joseph s with years of experience in both Queensland and Victorian schools. Welcome Mrs Hunter. Have a good week everyone and a great Term. Greg Cran Principal News from Fr. Michael First Communion Program This term our parish commences the First Communion Program. Children who have been baptized and made their first Reconciliation can be prepared for First Communion. First Communion occurs within the celebration of the Eucharist which is a sacrament of the Church. The Catholic Church has always emphasized the importance of the Eucharist in the life of Catholics. The Eucharist is mentioned in three of the gospels and in St Paul s letter to the Corinthians. Why? God wants Jesus to be present to us in our everyday life, not as a master to us but as a servant. This is very obvious if we read St Paul s letter to the Corinthians, This is what I received from the Lord and in turn passed on to you that in the same night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it, and he said, This is my body, which is for you: do this as a memorial of me. ( 1Corinthians 11:23-26) Christ s Body is for us as food for the Christian journey. The Eucharist only makes sense in the context of the Christian vocation do we want to imitate Jesus Christ. 3 Sports News This Friday 15th April, the following students David Taylor, Sheldon Brown, Dylan Kapernick and Oliver Bembrick are attending South Burnett Soccer Trials. Tytrell Combo, Fletch Prendergast, Nathan Roderick, Tom Currin are attending South Burnett Rugby League Trials. Bridie Prendergast, Saffron Sandow, Amelia Cran, Teagan O Sullivan are heading off to Netball Trials. We wish these students good luck as they represent St. Joseph s School in their chosen sporting fields. REMEMBER OUR CROSS COUNTRY RUN IS ON THIS THURSDAY 14th APRIL You are very welcome to come along and cheer your children on! It would be lovely to have parents, friends and family supporting this whole school event. Starts at 9am and will be completed by morning tea at 10.45am. Library News Bookclub flyers will be sent home today. These orders are due back by Monday 18 April. If paying by cheque please make your cheque payable to St Joseph s Primary School. 4 TUCKSHOP NEWS TUCKSHOP NEEDS YOUR HELP PLEASE! Donations of ingredients for home baking would be really appreciated. Ingredients needed are coconut, icing sugar, cocoa, flour, sugar, butter or margarine. Please phone the office if you need more information. Also helpers are still needed in the Tuckshop if you can spare some time it would be most appreciated. Hoping to see some new faces, as you would be most welcome. We welcome Nikki Guyomar as our new Treasurer. Thank you kindly for taking on this role. Thank you very much to Heather Rowberry for all her commitment and hard work over the past years as Treasurer to the P & F. Also thank you to Michael Greenwoood, Jamie Currin and Sheree Prendergast for working on Saturday, 2nd April at Kingaroy Speedway. Your help was greatly appreciated. Particularly as it was during the school holidays. On Monday 25th April, we once again will be working at the Wondai Races providing our hot chips. 5 APRE Message Welcome back to another wonderful term of learning, celebrating and achieving. I hope you had a wonderful break with your family. This is a long term, with 11 weeks until the end of semester 1. We have many special celebrations this term and we always delight in seeing parents and families join us. The celebrations are as follows: 15 th April- Anointing Mass-Year 5/6 22 nd April-Anzac Memorial Service 5 th May- Edmund Rice Feast Day 6 th May-Mother s Day-Anointing Mass 20 th May-Mass-Year 5/6 & Prep 26 th May-National Sorry Day 7 th June-Marcellin Champagnat Feast Day 10 th June-Anointing Mass-Year 4 Project Compassion A huge thank you, to everyone who contributed to our yearly Caritas fundraiser. We were delighted to present them with $485. This was a great effort and we are reminded to be grateful for the blessed life we experience. Today we completed our presentation of the Holy Week celebrations. Our Year 1 students acted out the final section: Resurrection Year 1 Our faith is based on the death and resurrection of Christ, just like a house built on foundations, if they give in, the whole house collapses. Resurrection opens up to us the path to be reborn to a new life. This term in Religious Education the classes will be exploring and learning about: Prep: Students will explore how God made the world and how we are asked to care for this world. Year 1: Students will be learning about the special qualities of Mary, prayers about Mary and how we can learn to be more like Her. Year 2: Students will be exploring the connection between Jesus teaching and actions and the way members of the Church community live today. Year 3: Students will explore Jesus as the Messiah. They will also investigate the context in which the Gospels were written. Year 4: Students will explore a variety of books and text types in the Old and New Testament and they will learn how to use this knowledge to better understand God s Word. Year 5/6: Students will be looking at how members of the Church community know how God wants them to live? This is incorporating the importance of prayer and worship for the Church community.
