1 St Mary s School Warwick Newsletter 14 April 2016 Term 2 Week 1 Dear Parents/Caregivers, Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone has had a relaxed and enjoyable term break. Although this term is 11 weeks, it already feels as though it is action packed! The excitement of the Easter story continues to be an important part of our daily lives at St Mary s School. We have reflected on the sacrifice of Jesus and the message he leaves for us. It is our duty and responsibility to action his message of love and hope in a world where there are many challenges and times of despair. Attached to this week s newsletter is an article from Parenting Ideas called Beyond Their Years. The article comments on the difficulties parents face with information available to children through various mediums that do not reflect real life. The mantra we have adopted from Catherine McAuley Using Jesus as our Compass, challenges us to make sure our values are never compromised by some of the information we are exposed to through the media. To be the living expression of Your kindness; To always show kindness, in my face, kindness in my eyes, kindness in my smile, kindness in my warm greeting. To be the light of Your kindness to the poor. To give Your kindness to everyone I meet. When we come to judge the success of our lives, we will ask but three questions: How much did I love? 2 Spotlight on Staff Mrs Monica Hounslow I have been employed as a School Officer at St. Mary s Primary for almost 28 years. During this time, my main role has been working as a Special Needs Teacher-Aide as well as general classroom Teacher-Aide. I have also carried out the duties of Administration-Aide and Library-Aide. During my time spent at St Mary s I have been privileged to support many Classroom teachers who have been very dedicated and professional educators. My role at St Mary s is a very rewarding one and I thoroughly enjoy supporting the children with their education. Some of their comments bring a smile to my face. E.g. You know Mrs. Hounslow is a nice old lady! Also, hearing a child saying, Oh, now I get it! gives me great satisfaction. I am married to Barry and have three happily married children and I am a proud and doting nanna to Alexandra, Evelyn and James. My early years were spent on Collins family farm at Willowvale. I attended Willowvale State School for my primary education and completed my secondary education at Mt. St. Michael s College, Ashgrove, Brisbane. I enjoy most sports, (not actively these days), especially, Netball, Cricket and Rugby League. Keeping up-to-date with our forever-increasing Collins family tree and reading are also favourite interests of mine. Assembly Information for parents: Assemblies this year have moved to a fortnightly timetable (unless other commitments or public holidays fall on this date). Classes have been rostered to lead each assembly. The students from the Lower Campus will leave the Lower Campus no later than 1.25pm on the scheduled Assembly days and have their snack break at the Upper Campus with their buddy class. It is anticipated that Assembly will commence no later than 2.05pm so children in Years P-3 are back at the lower campus for the normal afternoon dismissal. As always, all members of our school community are welcome to attend. Curriculum Reading Super Six Focus: Monitoring For the next two weeks, classes will focus on the Super Six Strategy of Monitoring. When monitoring, a good reader stops and thinks about what they are reading and know when to stop, if what they are reading doesn t make sense. Good readers ask themselves: Does what I am reading make sense? Do I need to re-read this? What does this word mean? What can I use to help me to understand what I m reading? Life Education and Healthy Harold have arrived at St Mary s School Warwick!!!

3 You Can Do It! Education Building the Foundation of Getting Along Getting Along is revealed when students work cooperatively with each other, resolve conflicts by discussion rather than fights, manage their anger, show tolerance of others, and follow important class rules. These are examples of Getting Along and students should be encouraged to practise the following behaviours: Taking turns Handling conflict by talking rationally to one another. Not getting too angry with someone who behaves unfairly or inconsiderately. Including all classmates in a group activity or game. Sincerely complimenting another student. Ignoring rude comments from others. Sharing materials. Making sure certain students are not left out or picked last for games. Helping each other clean up. Not interrupting and waiting until someone has finished speaking. Waiting your turn. RE News Family Mass Saturday 30 th April Please join us for the Parish's next Family Mass on 30 th April at the 6:00pm Saturday Mass. This is a great community celebration with readings and songs chosen with children in mind. We are looking for families who would like to sing, share the readings, carry the offertory and welcomers. 4 2 nd Hand Uniforms Do you have any School Uniforms at home that are no longer required for your children? Please consider donating them to the school for resale. All proceeds of 2 nd hand uniform sales go directly to the P&F Association. St Mary s Catholic Parish Warwick Dear Parents/Guardians In late 2014, the Parish commissioned a School Review carried out by AEC, a consultancy firm, to look at future planning for the schools, especially the P-12 single campus and the overlapping of school and parish facilities. The review was released in April last year and was discussed and forwarded to parish diocesan and educational authorities. I have received some enquiries regarding the outcome of this review and the following is an attempt to address these enquiries: P-12 single campus The schools have received substantial government funding in recent years and if the schools are moved, these grants would need to be refunded. The factors which would attract government funding, namely population growth, do not apply to Warwick. Therefore this project would not attract government funding. Any future project would not be able to be funded locally because of the high cost of such a project. 1. Assumption College The college would remain at its present location. Population figures would suggest that enrolments would remain stable for the foreseeable future. It was recommended that Assumption and St Mary s could work together and share human resources for some curriculum areas. 2. St Mary s Primary School The Split campus presents some challenges: The overlapping of parish and school facilities The duplication of facilities and resources and subsequent costs associated with this. Administration of two campuses, in particular the management of human resources across the two campuses. The sustainable management of safety and maintenance requirements for two campuses The review strongly recommends that St Mary s Primary School community work towards a future development plan to address these issues. At present, there is no plan. In the meantime, the parish is attempting to address student protection procedures with regards to shared premises and space. 6 St. Mary's Primary School. 14 th April, 2016 Dear Parents/Carers Below is the information regarding ANZAC Day events to be held next week (Week 2). The format for the celebrations is a little different to last year. ST MARY S SCHOOL AND ASSUMPTION COLLEGE ANZAC DAY LITURGY Students and staff from Years 1-6 will join with students and staff from Assumption College to commemorate ANZAC Day for This celebration will be held in the MacKillop Centre commencing at 9.30am on Friday 22 nd April, Members of the St Mary s School community are very welcome to join in this special occasion. Children from Kindy and Prep will reflect on the ANZAC story with visits from students from Assumption College after the main commemorative service. This will occur in our lower library at approximately 10.40am. LESLIE PARK CENOTAPH SERVICE Students from St Mary s Warwick are encouraged to participate in the annual Warwick March and Commemorative Service to be held on Monday 25 th April, St Mary s Students (from Prep to Year 6) will need to wear their formal summer school uniform (Prep normal Monday to Friday uniform), with school hat. Children will require a water bottle. There will not be any shade and/or access to water other than individual water bottles. St Mary s Kindergarten students will wear their St Mary s navy blue Kindergarten uniform, (school hat and water bottle are a necessity). We will assemble in Palmerin Street, in the section from King Street to Percy Street (on the same side as Danny Lyons Sports Store). St Mary s School and Kindergarten will assemble between am ready for the march to commence at 10.40am. We look forward to all students walking with St Mary s on Anzac Day, demonstrating community service, respect and pride in our great Nation.
