1 Learning for Life Term 1 Week 5 Friday 2 March 2018 From the Principal Pupil Free Day Deep Thinking for Deep Learning Tuesday 27 February staff reengaged with Lane Clark from Canada to continue our learning in Deep Thinking for Deep Learning; which assists teachers to further intellectually challenge learners, through the skills of critical and creative thinking and questioning. Teachers have commenced trialling aspects of the new learning already, and will be communicating with our facilitator via Skype sessions throughout the year. Lane will be with us again 22 October to work with a group of teachers we have been appointed to champion the work throughout the year, implementing and leading the learning with others. Parent / Teacher Interviews Parent / Teacher interviews are a vital avenue for staff to report student achievement thus far and for both parties to raise concerns they may have about a student s progress. Many teachers include the voice of the student at the meeting which is a way of capturing the child s voice in the process. Interview week will be held during Week 8 this term starting Tuesday 20 March. Further information regarding booking a time with your child s teacher will be sent to you over next week. Late night interviews will be held on Tuesday 20 March. Please also remember that you are encouraged to call a meeting with your child s teacher at any time throughout the year to discuss your child s progress, particularly if you have concerns. In the past staff have made contact with families when they have had concerns and will continue to do so Pupil Free and School Closure Dates Tuesday 13 March - Pupil Free Day Monday 20 August - Pupil Free Day Friday 7 September - School Closure Day Friday 30 November - Pupil Free Day Contact OSHC on for bookings. 4 Respect Responsibility Resilience Relationships Learning for Life News from Students in Year 2 In Rooms 8, 9, 10, 15 and 16 we have been learning about our social and emotional learning and Growth Mindsets. Having a growth mindset can help us to be successful and improve our learning and our relationships. In English, we have been working on Descriptive Writing, using adjectives and visualisation to describe and draw different things. The more the description we use, the better idea we have of what something looks like. It helps us when we are reading to visualise what is happening in a story and it makes our writing more interesting. Room 8 students gives Year 2 a thumbs up! Living Safely with Pets Program The dog was so cute! - Ruby Page 4
5 STUDENT WELLBEING This year as a school we have decided to use a program called You Can Do It. (YCDI). The main purpose of YCDI is to provide children with the opportunity to develop their social and emotional wellbeing through the five foundations of confidence, persistence, getting along, organisation and emotional resilience. As educators it is our responsibility to support our students in reaching their potential academically, intellectually interpersonally and emotionally. The 5 foundations are inextricably linked to our school values. Respect getting along and confidence Resilience persistence, confidence and emotional Resilience Relationships getting along Responsibility organisation Each class has a set of the 5 foundation posters outlining the type of language teachers will use with their students to build consistency across all year levels. If you would like a copy of the 5 A4 posters please me and I can send you an electronic copy. Yiota.seindanis490@schools.sa.edu.au After School Sport News Term 2 and 3 After School Sports Registration Forms for After School Sports (Term 2 and 3) are available from the Front Office and on the school website. Summer After School Sports Presentation Night The Summer After School Sports Presentation Night is being held on Friday 6 April in the school gym. Students who participated in Basketball or Netball in Term and Term will receive a trophy on this night. Individual invitations will be sent out to relevant students in coming weeks. Cricket The cricket season has begun. We have 6 East Adelaide teams competing in cricket during Term 1 and 4. We have 1 Kanga Junior (Year 2) team, 2 Kanga Senior (Year 3) teams, 2 C Grade (Year 4/5) and an A Grade (Year 6/7) team. Thanks to all parents who have assisted us with coaching and scoring for the teams. We are very lucky to have many quality coaches involved in our cricket teams. This term has a very short cricket season due to the influence of winter sports, such as football and soccer booking out local sporting facilities. We are looking forward to even more children involved in Cricket in Term 4 this year! Winter Netball Teams Netball Coaches have met this week to discuss the upcoming Winter Netball Season. Details regarding children's allocation to a netball team, coaches, training days and times, uniform requirements etc will all be distributed by the end of the term.
