2 Curriculum offerings Our distinctive curriculum offerings The children in our school have the opportunity to participate and learn guitar. This group is taught by our music teacher and she is assisted by one of our classroom teachers. The children are taught how to play the guitar and are often seen performing at school performances with the instrumental ( Chorc ) and choir groups. Every second year the children have the opportunity to perform in a whole school musical concert. This musical is written and directed by staff members from St Francis Xavier School. The Upper Primary children are given the opportunity to audition for lead roles and all other children in the school perform in class and year level items. This musical concert is a long standing tradition at St Francis Xavier School and is enjoyed by all involved. Our school competes in interschool (Yr 6 &7) and regional (Year 4 7) competitions in a variety of sports. These include Soccer, Netball, Touch Football and Basketball. We also have an Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming Carnival that all year levels have the opportunity to participate in at some level. Auskick is a program offered to all students over a eight week period during Term 2 of each year. This program is conducted after school and the students must nominate and pay to participate. Extra curricula activities The St Francis Xavier School Concert is offered every second year and all children have the opportunity to participate in this concert. The Year Six and Seven children are able to audition for lead roles in this production. Our students are able to participate in the following extra-curricular activities: Parents may nominate and pay for their children to enter these competitions Year 3 7 Mathematics Competition University of New South Wales Year 3 7 English Competition University of New South Wales Year 3 7 Science Competition University of New South Wales Junior and Senior Choir these groups perform at school functions and Queensland Catholic Primary Schools Choral Festival ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTING

3 How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning Information Communication and Learning Technologies are used in all areas of our school curriculum. We recognise that the children in our school are 21st century learners and as a result all classrooms have access to a variety of digital technologies including digital cameras, digital video cameras, desktop computers, teacher laptops to name a few. Interactive whiteboards are used in a variety of ways to engage and motivate our learners. During 2011, our school was successful in receiving an ICLT Grant which enabled us to implement the Yr 2 ipod Touch Project. This project was designed to increase the engagement of all students, students were motivated and stimulated to want to learn, increase opportunities for oral and visual literacy, promote collaboration within the classroom and improve language opportunities for our ESL and at risk learners. The ipods were used during literacy and numeracy teaching time and are a very popular activity that all children look forward to participating in. This project also enabled students from disadvantaged backgrounds to have experiences with the ipods that they wouldn t be able to access in their own home environments. Social climate St Francis Xavier School caters for children from many and varied backgrounds, ability levels and cultures. All children are treated equally and given equal opportunity in their educational and extra curricular activities. We are situated on the outer suburbs of Ipswich City. We draw most of our enrolments from the suburbs of Goodna, Camira, Gailes, Springfield, Redbank Plains and Forest Lake, but children travel distances to attend our school, attracted by our academic reputation and quality education of the whole child. St Francis Xavier School also has enjoyed an excellent reputation for the high quality Whole School Behaviour Management Program and our Anti-Bullying and Procedures Policy that exist at our school. Our school won the State Government Award during Child Protection Week in 2008 for Child Participation in a Child Protection Initiative. This award was in recognition of our Anti-Bullying Policy and Procedures. Our school takes pride in the various Pastoral Care Initiatives established in our school. The school has clearly identified pastoral care programs and support. Eg pastoral worker, SEASONS program, anger management workshops. Pastoral care programs and strategies at the school are effective in addressing student personal and social development. Eg Bounce Back program, resiliency programs, Skills for Growing, Rock & Water program. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school There is a wonderful holistic approach to the whole school community well done! The school provides great support for all parents to get involved in their children s learning especially if there is a problem. We are impressed with the great care and concern parents and teachers show towards each other and the pupils. It is a feel good school and we hope to enjoy a full and satisfying existence whilst at St Francis Xavier School. ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTING

4 Involving parents in their child s education St Francis Xavier School actively welcomes parental involvement with the school and their child s education. Teachers are happy to meet with parents at any time however, appointments must be made. Parent-Teacher Interviews are conducted at the end of Term 1 and early Term 2. Parents may also request an interview with their child s teaching after reporting at the end of each Semester. At the beginning of the year, a Parent-Teacher Information Evening is held where the teacher will give an overview of the curriculum for the year, the organisation of the class is discussed, procedures explained and parents are informed of excursions etc that they can expect their child to be involved in during the year. St Francis Xavier School has an active Parents and Friends Association which always welcomes new members. Through our P&F we raise much needed funds for equipment, resources and ICLT Resources. Many parents volunteer their time as classroom helpers. Parents are always welcome and their assistance is gratefully received.
