1 UNIFORM AND PRESENTATION School uniform is an essential part of school discipline. Breaches of the uniform code will be dealt with in line with the school behaviour policies. (See School Uniform and Presentation Policy on VLE/Staff Intranet.) A smart appearance is important - it sets the tone for all we do. If students are well presented and tidy it is likely that their attitude and work will be equally focused, for the benefit of all. A smart appearance is expected as preparation for adult working life. For Boys Ties should be done up to the collar - top button not visible. Ties should be worn at a suitable length - at least to the 5th button. Shirts should be tucked in - front, back and sides. For Girls Uniform skirt/trousers (with logo) and blouse should be worn in accordance with uniform guidelines (see below). Make-up and jewellery should conform to uniform guidelines. Both Correct footwear is worn. Blazer is worn in accordance with uniform guidelines. If a student does not meet these standards, members of staff should sign his/her Uniform Card. On receipt of 5 signatures the card will be taken from the student and the he/she will receive a uniform detention. It is the student's responsibility to collect a clean uniform card from his/her Head of School. Lost cards will result in a uniform detention. Any student creating difficulties when asked for his/her card will be given a uniform detention. Students who fully meet the standards will qualify for rewards at the end of each term. PRESENTATION (Girls) Blazers are to be worn at all times and only removed with the permission of the class teacher. On joining the school, students are issued with a coloured badge that indicates which year group they are in and this should be worn on the left lapel of the blazer at all times. Discreet make-up is a privilege for girls in Years 9 11 (brown/black mascara; natural lipstick lightly applied; natural foundation lightly applied; no eye-liner or eye shadow allowed). Nail varnish and false nails are not to be worn by any student. Teaching and support staff are advised that they are not allowed to remove make-up/nail varnish themselves. Please refer to Protocol For Removal Of Make-Up. For girls safety in practical lessons and to protect them from possible theft, the only permitted jewellery is a pair of studs or small hoop earrings and a watch. (As a guide, the hooped earrings should be no larger than the size of a 5 pence piece, i.e. 17mm in diameter and 2mm in width - anything larger would be considered a health and safety hazard.) Only one earring in each ear lobe is allowed. Other body piercings, e.g. nose studs, tongue studs and eyebrow bars, are not allowed in school. Rings, necklaces and/or bracelets are not allowed.
2 Please also note that no earrings or watches are allowed for PE and should be removed for these lessons (for this reason, girls planning to have their ears pierced are advised to have this carried out at the start of the summer holiday). Watches should be engraved with the owner s name. No responsibility can be accepted by members of staff for the safe keeping of earrings and watches. Girls hair should be tidy and of a style and a length suitable for school. Severely short or patterned hair is not acceptable, neither is the extreme bright/unnatural colouring of hair or any style which draws attention. For reasons of health and safety, shoulder length hair, including any braids, should be tied back in practical lessons and hair must not obscure the eyes. Plain navy blue or white hair-bands only. Decorative hair accessories, including beads, are not allowed. Plain hair slides and clips only (not brightly coloured), are allowed. In summer, baseball caps offer sensible protection from the sun, but may only be worn at break time and lunchtime. They are not part of school uniform and should not be worn inside the buildings. In winter, only plain, white t-shirts may be worn beneath blouses and must not be visible. Overcoats and woollen hats also offer sensible protection from the cold, but may only be worn to and from school and at break time and lunchtime; they are not part of school uniform and should not be worn inside the buildings. Trainers may be worn for break/lunchtime sport activities - they must not be worn inside the school building. 5 UNIFORM CARD GUIDANCE FOR STUDENTS Students must have their uniform card with them at all times. It would be sensible to keep inside your planner, which would be taken with you if given permission to be out of lesson. Teachers will check each day for uniform that does not meet school guidance or uniform that is worn inappropriately. You should ensure that: For boys: For girls: Both: 1. Ties are done up to the collar - top button not visible and are worn at a suitable length - at least to the 5 th button. 2. Shirts are tucked in - front, back and sides. 3. Uniform trousers are worn. 1. Uniform skirt and blouse is worn in accordance with uniform guidelines. 2. Make-up and jewellery meet uniform guidelines. 1. Correct footwear is worn. 2. Blazers are worn in accordance with uniform guidelines. 3. Humanities College badges are worn at all times and are clearly visible on the left lapel. Uniform guidance is on display in each classroom and a version for students printed on the reverse of this sheet. This contains further guidance on presentation and should be read carefully. If you do not meet the above standards a member of staff will sign your card On receipt of 5 signatures your card will be taken and you will receive a uniform detention. It is your responsibility to collect a clean card from your Head of School. Lost cards will result in a uniform detention. If you create difficulties when asked for your card, you will be given a uniform detention. Students who fully meet the standards, will qualify for rewards each term.
6 UNIFORM CARD SYSTEM GUIDELINES FOR STAFF All staff with a classroom responsibility (e.g. cover supervisors) are expected to apply this system. For members of staff with an identified classroom responsibility, implementation is optional. If in doubt, clarification should be sought from senior support staff. Students will be issued with one uniform card each term. Students in receipt of 5 warnings will be given a uniform detention. Teachers may only stop and ask for the card, if there is a clear infringement of the system (guidance noted on reverse side of card and displayed in classrooms). Students must have the card with them at all times (even if sent to the toilet /medical room the card should be taken as well as the Student Planner). After a 5 th warning has been issued and the card retained, it is the responsibility of the student to collect a clean card from HOSCH The member of staff issuing the 5 th warning, retains card and passes to the HOSCH Office ideally, on the same day. The HOSCH Office staff should also be advised about any student who does not have their card, so that follow up action can be taken. Lost /Spoiled Cards/Challenging Behaviour: Students who do not have their cards with them or who create difficulties when asked for their card will automatically be given a uniform detention. In this event, staff should advise the Heads of School directly. Temporary cards may be issued for the day at the discretion of HOSCH. Students who arrive at school and have forgotten their card, should report to their Head of School. Pupils who lose their card, require a letter from a parent for a replacement. Students who have clean cards at the end of each term, are eligible to take part in a draw CD/book vouchers will be awarded for each year group. Role of the Form Tutor: form tutors should monitor the uniform standards and will be informed of uniform detentions issued.
