Term 3 Week 8, 7 September 2018 MOOROOKA STATE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Address Sherley Street Moorooka 4105 Phone Student Absence Line studentabsences@moorookas s.eq.edu.au Website moorookass@eq.edu.au Uniform Shop Friday 2pm to 4pm A/Principal Kristin Hill School Support Staff Week Last week across our state we took the time to thank and acknowledge our school support staff, who do great work every day to ensure schools are safe and operational. At Moorooka State School, our Business Manager, Administration Officers and Schools Officer Grounds all make a significant contribution to our school s safe and supportive environment. They work as a team with others in the school, undertaking vital roles that keep our school functioning. Again, on behalf of our school community, a very big thank you to each member of our school support staff at Moorooka State School! Teacher Assistants Appreciation Week This week, Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week is being observed from Monday 3 September to Friday 7 September providing an opportunity for us to recognise, acknowledge and celebrate the skills and abilities that our Teacher Assistants bring to the daily life and operation of our school. Moorooka State School is very fortunate to have a fantastic group of talented Teacher Assistants who work hard to support students in their learning and staff in their teaching their contribution to our school is a very significant one. On behalf of our school community, we acknowledge and thank each of our awesome Teacher Assistants! Facebook astateschool P & C Meetings 2 nd Tuesday of Month 6.30pm Fight for our Farmers Responding to suggestions and encouragement from students and families, our Student Council decided to support the Fiver for a Farmer campaign. Being mindful of a number of current fundraisers and other activities, our Student Council came up with their own tweak, to make it Fight for our Farmers. On Tuesday last week, students and staff were invited to come to school dressed as a farmer and bringing a donation, with all funds raised going to support our farmers and drought relief. Well done Moorooka with thanks to you, we raised a total of $850 an absolutely outstanding result! 1

P&C Park and Stride morning and Father s Day Stall thanks Thank you to our P&C and volunteers for providing our students with a stall last week to purchase a gift for Father s Day. Thank you to the volunteers that gave of their time to assist in running the stall and thank you also to parents and carers for your support School Opinion Survey The 2018 School Opinion Survey period is now closed, with completion of the annual survey undertaken online. My sincere thanks and appreciation to those parents and carers who took the time to respond to the survey. While participation in School Opinion Survey is voluntary, your feedback is important to us. The greater the number of responses, the more closely the survey results will be representative of the overall opinions held at our school. Acting Deputy Principal Janelle Crawford Prep Year in 2019 Prep 2019 Parent Information Sessions. Next week we have three transition mornings organised on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. 3 Children are eligible for Prep in 2019 if they are born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June While the new school year may seem a while away, it is important that we have as much information as possible to manage our enrolments. 5 Finance News Catherine O Sullivan Forms and Payment for Excursion to Trevena Glen Farm for Preps is required to be submitted by 12 th September to Office. A reminder to all Year 5 parents that Camp fees must be finalised by Friday 21 st September and all Year 6 Camp fees must be finalised by Friday 12 th October. NO LATE PAYMENTS AFTER THESE DATES WILL BE ACCEPTED! If your child is not attending camp can you please advise the school in writing as soon as possible? When paying by Bpoint/Bpay please ensure that the correct invoice number is used and is the one pertaining to the excursion. As we have had several payments going to the wrong activity. E.g. Payments for sport going to camp allocation. This creates a great deal of work and confusion for both office staff and organisers. Please refer to the following instructions when making payment by BPoint. 5

School Banking Get involved in the School Banking program. Moorooka State School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.the rewards available during 2018 are: Twister Power Handball Secret Scratch Pad Sparkle Glitter Pens Glow Light Mighty Boom Handball Heat Reactor Pencils Slushie Maker Cup Zoom Flying Disc School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year. Getting involved in School Banking is easy! All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways: 1. Online Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. 2. In branch Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver s licence and birth certificate. If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet. School Banking day is Friday. Each week you need to hand your banking into the Office by 9.30am. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking 6

Administration OHSC Parents need to advise not only the School when their child is absent but also OHSC if their child normally attends. If you pick your child up early due to sickness please inform OHSC if they are due to attend that afternoon. Unnecessary Class Interruptions All parents need to be aware that we will not interrupt class time to relay messages to teachers or students unless it is an emergency. To assist us with this we ask that parents Confirm pickup time and place with their child prior to morning drop off Ensure your child has all necessary notes and equipment before departing for school in the morning. 7

Literacy and Numeracy SSP Speedy Six Activity 3 I have been showing the Speech Sound Pic activities that students are doing in class to help them with their phonemic awareness and spelling skills. The Teacher does the I DO part, the students the You Do part. This activity helps students to hear sounds in words as well helping their working memory. Janelle Crawford Support Teacher Literacy and Numeracy 8
