1 NEWTON HOUSE SCHOOL 18 August 2017 Term 3, Issue 4 From the Headmaster s Desk... On Monday, our Cross Country season came to an end. Cross Country is such a wonderful sport. It teaches tenacity and rewards those who do not give up. Last week, the headmaster s address focused on an incident where a young lady from another school went out of her way to assist one of our pupils. It is such a joy that, a week later, one of our own pupils learnt from this wonderful example and put it into practice. At Newton House, we strive to produce young men and women who are able to look past themselves. To recognise that sometimes other s needs exceed their own. Most importantly, we want them to respond to these needs in a sacrificial manner. Not in order to gain recognition or moral payback, but just because it's the right thing to do. This Monday, the U/12 coaches were standing at the finishing line recording the places of the runners in the team. Connor Brookes had just crossed the finish line and was looking exhausted after the race. He was noticeably hot and received an ice cold sachet of water from the officials. As he walked toward the coaches, a young Grade One boy from another school approached at the same time. The little boy asked the coaches if they had any water as he was very thirsty. The coaches replied that they were sorry, but they had no water with them. Without even thinking, Connor immediately handed over his water sachet with a casual, Here you go. The little boy s face absolutely lit up and he ran off happily with his water. Connor, meanwhile, nonchalantly walked off to find a tap so he could get the water he so badly needed after a long race. This is the exact attitude that we want to inculcate in our pupils. Well done Connor for setting an excellent example for all of us to follow. 2 SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST COMPUTER LAB PE is every Wednesday for Grades 2-3 and every Thursday for Grades 4-7. Grade R Playball is every Friday and Grade 1 Playball is every Monday. Please remember school caps for PE and Playball. Children are to be in their winter uniform. The Second Hand Shop is open on Tuesdays from 13h15-15h00. Grade 4B hard at work in our computer lab. 4 JP GENERAL KNOWLEDGE The Junior Primary s General Knowledge Quiz is on Thursday, 21 September. Test your child s general knowledge with these three questions from the quiz: What colour do you get when you mix blue and red? What is the main organ in your body that you use to breathe? In the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk, what did Jack sell to get the magic beans? PREFECTS AND MONITORS The Prefects and Monitors arrived at their weekly meeting looking like they had had a busy day at school. They tackled the nuts and bolts issues of the meeting, sharing concerns about their duties. The fun part of the meeting took the form of a "retro" game of pass the parcel. They described the experience as energising, a blast, fun and a team-building experience. This was all done to the upbeat tune of Nelly the Elephant. GRADE 4 ENGLISH During our Grade Four s English lesson, we turned learning into a fun practical relay. We have been focusing on verb tenses, in order to make the concept more concrete, we had two teams race to decide which tense the words belonged to. It was a great interactive lesson where all the students participated. The red team won both races. Well done Grade Fours! 4

5 GOLF DAY ***AUCTION*** We have a fully SIGNED and FRAMED print of the Centurions of Springbok Rugby up for auction. All the proceeds from this auction will be going to our Care Fund to assist families within the school. The auction will close at 19:30 on Friday, 15 September and the winning bid will be announced at the golf day dinner. Thank you so much to all who have contributed towards the golf day. We are very excited and are confident that the day will be a great success. We are still looking for prizes and smaller items to go into the goodie bags of the players on the day. If you would like to donate, please contact Mr Forsyth at bforsyth@newtonhouse.co.za. Please note that due to staff involvement in the golf day, school will be closed on Friday, 15 September. SPORTS NOTICES Good luck to Daniella Bradbrooke who will take part in the D10 district trials at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium on Saturday. Being invited to the trials is an incredible achievement. We are so proud of you Daniella. Good luck to the tennis players who are playing against The Kings School West Rand on Monday, 21 August. The next tennis match will take place on Monday, 28 August at Constantia Park Primary School. Please keep the following dates open for Athletics meetings: Wednesday, 30 August at Newton House School Thursday, 7 September at Agape Christian School Wednesday, 13 September at Newton House School Any children who did not do Cross Country, but would like to join the Athletics team are welcome to join the practices. These take place on Mondays and Wednesdays as per the extra mural timetable. Children who do not make the race team are still encouraged to attend the practices and can still be eligible for an Eagle Award. The kit for Athletics is the same as for Cross Country: Black Athletics vest (the white PE shirt may be worn under the vest), black PE shorts, white socks and running shoes. Children are allowed to run Athletics barefoot. However, they must still arrive at and depart from practices and matches wearing their socks and shoes. 5

6 CROSS COUNTRY On Monday, 14 August, the Cross Country team participated in their last meeting of the season. The races, hosted by Curro Aurora, took place at the Ruimsig Stadium. It was a challenging course, but wonderful to finish the race on the fast paced athletics track. It is pleasing to see that the teams level of fitness has improved dramatically since the first race. Thank you to all the children who took part in Cross Country this season. Newton House s team numbers rivalled many of the other larger schools who took part. The team can be congratulated on their tremendous efforts and achievements. Not only is this an achievement in itself, but by doing so he improved his best ranking by 22 places. Daniel, we are really proud of you! Congratulations to Isaac Schluter (U/11) who won a nail-biting 50 metre sprint to beat his closest competitor. Isaac, your determination to do your best all the way to the end of the race is admirable. You have done Newton House proud. CHESS Our chess teams were invited to play in the Trinityhouse Chess Festival. We entered one junior development team and two senior teams. This was the first competition for many of our pupils and valuable experience was gained by competing against different schools. The aim of the festival was to prepare the pupils for the JNW Chess League which takes place in September. These matches were played on a friendly basis and good sportsmanship was the order of the day, with no results being recorded. 6
