1 2016 Fall Campaign Kick-Off O ur Thanksgiving is especially great this year, for all the blessings God has given us! We have a school, all bright and new, filled with caring teachers and staff, and hard-working students learning and deepening their Catholic faith. New Principal Takes the Reins I t s been a blur of activity and a loving embrace for new school principal Michael Yaptinchay when he officially started in his new role in July. I really appreciate the very warm welcome I ve received from the teachers, students and their parents, and all of the parish leaders who support this school, said Michael. It feels like home and I am grateful for this opportunity to build upon the tremendous work and vision of Catherine Oberndorf. Having been a parishioner and now principal, I really feel that I can serve our community in a deeper way, and it makes connecting the dots a bit easier, he added. I also want to better understand the unique relationship that the school has to the cont d on page 2 After so many years of striving, giving, working, praying and hoping we have so much to be grateful for. Our children are doing their part raising money for the Walkathon, and appreciating what they have been given. Thank you to all our donors and volunteers, for all the little and big things you do, each and every year. We continue on in our 16th year, to finish the third floor and pay for the mortgage. 2 New principal... Oblate Fathers and the Sisters of St. Ann, and it s a very rich tradition we will maintain. I love the way that the school is marked in virtually every room with the simplicity of all the crosses, in all shapes and sizes. It s what we re all about, he said. The core of my work is to help families bring their children into a relationship with Jesus Christ, said Michael. While there are responsibilities as an administrator and for teachers to integrate the new provincial school curriculum and expand the use of technology, for example, he believes that he can bring greatest value by supporting good overall teaching and to continue building a foundation of faith. While words are nice, it s really in our actions that we can demonstrate our joyful witness to our faith and in the way we deal with conflict, how we resolve issues, and how we treat each other. Michael has been a parishioner for nearly a dozen years and was most recently principal at École St-Sacrement, a French Immersion school in the CISVA, where he was an administrator and teacher for 19 years. He s a Vancouver College graduate and is married (Lauren) with two very young children. Key Facts: Seniors Lunch continued On September 28, the school hosted a luncheon for the seniors of the parish. Former principal Mrs. Oberndorf and the grade 7 students prepared, served and hosted the lunch. Total enrolment: 268 students New teachers: 2 new teachers and 2 new teaching assistants Walkathon This year s walkathon started at Kits beach and, in small groups, followed the seawall. Funds raised are used to purchase supplies or equipment such as our new outdoor basketball hoops. We re blessed to have good friends to walk in such a beautiful area. Building Update F INISHING the third floor of the new school is a priority for the parish so more children and families can be welcomed into our school and grow in our Catholic faith. The building committee is hard at work to complete the detailed third floor plans that will essentially mirror the second floor of the school. We will soon take our plans to a quantity surveyor to establish a reasonable cost estimate before presenting our final proposals to the parish leadership and the Archdiocese of Vancouver for approval, said Vic Vela, chair of the building committee. Once these plans are completed and approvals are in place, the parish will seek bids for this work with the goal of starting work on the third floor by the end of the year. In order to minimize congestion with the day-to-day operations of the school, we ll be looking at scheduling the work starting in the late afternoons, weekends, and during the holidays, said Vic. Completing the third floor will enable the school to continue double-streaming its classes, as it has already done for kindergarten and grade 1. St. Augustine Welcomes New Staff Parish Profile: New Youth Ministries Leader W hen St. Augustine s new youth ministries coordinator Vea Coronado was asked about what she will do in her role, she said: I really want to help create and support a culture where we really love our young people it s as simple as that and it doesn t matter if you re a parent or not. Vea Coronado I believe in creating an environment of faith, confidence and enthusiasm combined with a sense of urgency in supporting our young people. The youth are not the Church of tomorrow but the Church of today. I m not an event planner but, rather, I will be going where young people are. It s far less intimidating for them, rather than asking them to come to a meeting. Vea is already reaching out to the school, the altar servers and will be directing the PREP program (religious education for children who attend public schools). Ultimately it will be through individual relationships that trust is built, safety is created and growth begins, she added. I m also here for parents to empower them to be the primary catechists and faith role models to their kids. Vea will be working with those in the discovery years : those completing their sacraments of initiation (Holy Communion, Reconciliation and Confirmation) and eventually when young men and women choose a vocation. It s the same experience that Vea had as a young person growing up in Surrey when she started becoming involved in youth ministry as a grade 10 student. I call it positive peer pressure where a young person is supported by friends who share an infectious love for our faith. Vea continued to be involved in youth ministry through her high school years and most recently completed four years at Our Lady of Sorrows parish as their youth co-ordinator. She s been married to Andre for four years, and he ll also be around to help with the youth initiatives. 4 A Few Words From Our Pastor Dear friends of St. Augustine s Parish and School, It s with immense gratitude that we have now officially completed the first phase of our new school, and accomplished within our projected budget of $10.4 million. Without all of your prayers, enormous generosity and the sustained leadership of our Faith and Foundation team, particularly our building committee, we would not be in this position today. Many of these leaders have been with this effort for years, some from its inception in We are also grateful for the pastors who carried this challenge: Father Brioux, Father Cook and Father McNamara. Thank you for your courage. We also keep in mind all of those who supported this campaign, but have since deceased. There were many, and they gave generously. As we look forward, we have an ongoing responsibility to complete the school s third floor and to meet our mortgage responsibilities. We absolutely need the continued collaboration between our school parents and the rest of our parish. It s what brought us to this point, and it will be what carries us forward. It s a particularly exciting time at St. Augustine s and so wonderful to see all of the families and their young children. We welcome a new principal and a new youth ministries co-ordinator. Michael and Vea will bring their gifts to our community in the service of young people. In closing, I encourage everyone to reflect on why we are doing this: to bring our children and their families into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. 5 2015 Financial Report This Financial Report provides donors to St. Augustine s Faith and Foundation Campaign with a full record of our gifts, other income and costs incurred during We thank all of our donors for their faithful support over the past 16 years as we complete the first phase of our new school. Our combined fundraising efforts during 2015 yielded $692,354. The start of our Campaign S t. Augustine s campaign to build a new school commenced in 1999 when then-pastor Father John Brioux, OMI assembled a group of parish leaders to study the needs of our aging elementary school. This review included an engineering feasibility study that found that it would be more cost-effective to replace the school than repair or renovate the existing structure. A fundraising campaign was launched in Campaign financial accountability The Faith and Foundation Campaign is accountable to the Pastor, finance committee and the parish pastoral council. We have checks and balances in our donation management system between the Campaign, Parish and Archdiocese. Donations are receipted and accounted for according to Canada Revenue Agency requirements. All donor information is held in strict confidence with access limited to the very few people required to manage this work. We maintain the accuracy of our records by ensuring the health of our pledge commitments. Building Funds are held in a joint Parish/Archdiocesan account with the Bank of Montreal (banker to the Archdiocese) for the sole purpose of building a school at St. Augustine s. Administering the campaign In 2015, we spent $51,533 to run the Campaign, from funds that were allocated through our annual Pass the Torch event. Our administration costs represent approximately 7.5 percent of total donations/pledges and is considered very low when compared to other philanthropic organizations in Canada. We are fortunate to have so many people who volunteer thousands of hours of their time to the Campaign. There are some activities that require paid part-time support to undertake the weekly and detailed administration require to process, track and manage hundreds of donor transactions. There are also expenses for financial service charges, mailing, printing, equipment and general office costs. Role of the Provincial Government and Archdiocese in funding a new school The Provincial Government funds operating expenses for independent schools like ours equivalent to 50 percent of the cost to educate a child in the public school system, with the remainder financed through school tuition, and fundraising. Provincial funding is not available for capital costs, such as building a new school. The Archdiocese will provide some interest subsidies. Building in Stages Phase 1 The first phase of the new school building is now complete: 10 classrooms, multipurpose room, learning common, basement/storage areas, and improvements to the gymnasium. Construction budget: $10.5 million Final cost: $10.4 million* Mortgage: $4.0 million * This does not include fixtures and furnishings (approx. $313,000) which was covered by a separate fund. Phase 2 This phase will create five classrooms on the third floor, allowing the school to continue double streaming its grade classes. Completion is targeted for September Over $200,000 has been set aside for the third floor. The parish continues to raise funds to minimize the amount that would need to be borrowed above $4 million. The Archdiocese has permitted the parish to pay interest costs (approx $9100/month) until the third floor is completed, at which time the full interest/principal payment will be required (approx $30,000/month). Phase 3 The final phase is replacement of the old gymnasium. The timing is uncertain, as it will ultimately depend on our ability to finance current and future improvements. In 2014, the cost of the new gymnasium was estimated at $5.5 - $6 million.
