Secondary Sport at Northside Guide to the College Sporting Program for Students in Years 7 to 12
From interhouse and interschool carnivals, to weekly interschool fixtures, social sport, regular fitness training and lunch time competitions, Northside's secondary students have many opportunities to participate in a diverse range of sporting activities. The emphasis of our sporting program is participation, cooperation, team spirit and having fun, with programs designed to motivate students to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle. There's something for everyone, whether you're interested in competitive team or individual sports, playing for fun and fitness, or hoping to progress to regional, state or national representation. We encourage all students to get involved and make the most of the social and physical benefits of sport participation. The transition from primary to secondary school sport sees a few important changes to the sports program, primarily: A new District (North West District), with district sport held on Wednesday afternoons (Years 7 & 8), and Thursday afternoons (Year 9). After-hours interschool fixtures (via the Brisbane Outer Schools Leagues). Communication regarding trials and sign-ons is predominantly via Student Notices, so students are expected to be more pro-active in getting involved. Progression to district, regional and state teams may be slightly different, depending on the sport. These changes are further explained throughout this booklet, in an attempt to help in the transition from primary to secondary school sport, and to ensure all students make the most of the sporting opportunities available. Interschool Sport (Team Sport) Northside secondary students compete in various interschool sporting competitions throughout the year, including District Sport, the Brisbane Outer Schools League, as well as Brisbane Christian Schools Gala Days. 2
District Sport Northside's secondary school is part of the North West District (NWD). Middle School students participate in the NWD Interschool Sport competition against Albany Creek, Kelvin Grove, Ferny Grove, Prince of Peace, The Gap, Mitchelton and Everton Park high schools. The emphasis of this program is active participation and team spirit. All fixtures are played in school time (from 1.30pm to 2.30pm) and participation is compulsory. The Year 7 & Year 8 competition is held on Wednesday afternoons, and Year 9 competition on Thursday afternoons. Venues vary depending on the sport, with teams being transported to and from venues via bus, leaving the College at 1pm and returning by 3.15pm. Students will participate in two seasons of competition each year, with different sports offered in each. Students select their preferred sport for each season via an on-line survey, details of which will be communicated via Student Notices and/or year level assemblies. There will usually be one or two weeks of trials and training, following which an A and B team will be named for each sport. Draws generally allow for only two teams from each school in each sport so, depending on numbers, students may need to opt for their second preference. Brisbane Outer Schools League (BOSL) The Brisbane Outer Schools League offers quality interschool competition in a variety of sports against other schools in the local North Brisbane Area. The competitions feature Middle School and Senior School divisions for boys and girls and central competition venues with external referees and officials. Fixtures are predominantly contested on Monday afternoons, between 3.30pm and 6pm. The various sports offered through this program are: Touch (Term 1) Futsal (Term 1) Basketball (Term 2-3) Volleyball (Term 2-3) Netball (Term 3-4) Rugby 7's (Term 3-4) 3
Students wishing to be involved in a team for any of the BOSL competitions will be required to trial and commit to training as outlined by their respective team coach. Brisbane Christian Schools Brisbane Christian Schools Gala Days offer students another opportunity to represent the College. Offered in various sports and for various age divisions, these carnivals see teams competing against a variety of teams from other Brisbane Christian Schools, and generally require students to be out of school for the entire day. 4
Other Interschool Opportunities Throughout the year there may be other opportunities for students to represent the school in various sports, at one day tournaments, one-off matches or a series of matches. In the past, we have been invited to play in Rugby 7's, Team Tennis, Touch, AFL and Soccer tournaments. The timing of these tournaments, and availability of coaches, will be a major determining factor in whether or not we are able to enter teams. Students will be notified of these opportunities via Student Notices. Interhouse Carnivals Students will be involved in three interhouse sporting carnivals each year: Swimming Carnival (Term 1) Cross Country Carnival (Term 2) Track & Field Carnival (Term 3) Participation and house spirit are the essence of these carnivals and it is expected that all students attend and get involved. These carnivals are the pathway to school representation for their respective sports. The winning House and Age Champions for each carnival are generally announced at the assembly following the carnival. 5
Interschool Carnivals Secondary students compete against other NWD schools in three major carnivals each year. Selection in the College team for these events is based on performance at the respective College Interhouse carnival. These carnivals are pathways to representation at Regional, State and National carnivals. 6
Representative Opportunities Throughout the year there are many opportunities for students who excel at particular sports to trial for District and Regional teams, with the possibility of being chosen to represent Queensland School Sport at national carnivals. Students aged 12 and under as at 31 December compete as part of the North District and must attend North District trials. Students aged 13 to 19 years as at 31 December are part of the North West District and therefore required to attend NWD trials. Trial dates and times will be communicated via student notices, with interested students asked to see the Junior School Sports Coordinator (12 years and under) or Secondary Sports Coordinator (13 years and older) for details. There will generally be a requirement to complete and return paperwork prior to attending any trials. Selection onto district, regional and state teams will be advised via the respective team coach or manager, often at trails. Please advise the Secondary Sports Coordinator if you are selected onto a district, regional or state team to enable accurate records to be kept. Lunchtime Activities Throughout the year, the Sports Captains and Year 12 Sports Group will organise fun sporting activities for students to get involved in during lunch time. Offerings vary greatly and may include Team, House or Form Class competitions, Teacher vs Student and Grade of Origin matches. These activities present a great way for students to get to know others, get active and have fun during their lunch break. All details of these competitions will be included in the student notices. Training To help prepare students for the various interhouse and interschool competitions, we offer fitness and strength and conditioning training at various times throughout the year. The aim of this program is to develop core 7
strength and improve overall fitness in a fun environment, which will benefit students in all sporting pursuits. Details of days and times of this training will be communicated via student notices. Sport-specific training is coordinated by the relevant team coach. It is important all players make an effort to attend to enable practice of skills and set-plays, as well as team bonding. Communication with the Sports Office In Secondary School, students must take their own initiative to get involved in the many sporting opportunities on offer. Details regarding College, District and Regional sports trials will be communicated via morning student notices. It is important students read notices each day carefully to be sure they don't miss any important sports news. Students' selection in a sporting team will generally be communicated to parents and students via . This information will also be added to the Parent Lounge. It is important that permission slips for these carnivals are returned in a timely fashion to enable suitable replacements to be found if necessary. Sometimes, for reasons beyond our control, last-minute changes to venues and game/training cancellations can occur. In these situations, every effort will be made to ensure all students are advised through in-class messages. Other sources of information for sports news are the College Newsletter, College website ( Northside Christian College Facebook page and Metropolitan North Sport website ( Sports Awards Evening Our annual Sports Awards Evening, held during term four, is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate students' sporting achievements. Age Champions, Premiership Winning Teams, Silver and Gold Award recipients and Players of the Year are all recognised at this event. A highlight of the evening is a presentation by our Guest Speaker, generally an elite athlete who is able to share their experiences of competing on the world stage. All College families are welcome to attend. 8
2017 Sport Captains We are looking forward to serving as Sports Captains in Our vision is to have all students participate in the College sports program, either by competing or by supporting those who represent the College. Sport is a great way to get to know other students, to stay active and healthy and to make your school days fun and memorable. We encourage everyone to get involved. Natalie and Cameron. 9
