1 5 September 2017 Principal s Report Last Friday morning our junior campus was filled with parents and children enjoying our annual Father s Day breakfast. This special day is a highlight on our calendar and the numbers of people enjoying the fully catered breakfast seems to be growing each year. Thanks must go to the Parent s Association for organising this wonderful morning. Jim Russell, a former School Council President attended our assembly to receive the funds raised for Legacy. The children raised $ for this wonderful organisation. As mentioned at the Senior Campus assembly on Monday, there is a girls only soccer clinic being held at the senior campus for all Grade 3 to Grade 6 girls on Friday 8 th September. Qualified coaches will attend on the day to run these girls only clinics. No previous soccer experience is required and it is open to all girls to try something new, or learn some new soccer skills. We have more girls clinics coming up over the next few months, and the next one after soccer will be touch rugby on Friday 15 th September. 2 Continued from previous page In order to participate, girls need to sign up by using the sign-up sheets, which are located outside the Library. Earn and Learn is a Senior Campus economics based program that our year 5 and 6 students undertake in Term 3 each year. Teams of students create small businesses, pay taxes, trade, barter and complete a wide range of related learning and extend invitations to other classes to visit their classrooms and share in the excitement of this terrific program. BYOD Information night was well attended last week by staff and parents from year 3 and 4. The night saw staff and providers present relevant curriculum information and details around the purchase of the devices to our parent group. Parents raised many issues through their questions and they were able to provide information and answers for our families. A special thank you to our staff for their work in preparing for this Information evening. Welcome to Jane Taranto who has joined our administrative team. Jane will work on our Junior campus, with a focus on the newsletter and website and we wish her all the best as she joins our Junior C office team. Chris Chant Gardenvale Primary School Council Update The final GPS Council meeting for Term 3 took place on 22 August. Items of interest for our school community include: Follow up from the highly engaging and successful joint School Council/ Student Representative Council meeting. We look forward to seeing the SRC outcome of costing and consultation and how best to spend funding approved by Council. Stay tuned! The finance report indicated the school remains ahead of budget and the process for setting the 2018 budget is well underway. The Communication committee completed compilation of the teacher feedback surveys and will commence collation of the parent component. A comprehensive report of outcomes and options for enhancing communication across the school community is to be presented at our next meeting. The Buildings and Grounds committee reported completion of the Junior Campus Office refurbishment and are now focussed on the process required to accommodate the extra Year 6 grade in The outcomes of the collated Gardenvale OSH committee online surveys will be presented to the Council at the October meeting, however identified themes around improvement to the current service are already being discussed with Camp Australia. Our Education committee are working on a comprehensive Working With Children policy for our school aligned with new regulations from the Departments of Education and Training and Justice. Finally, the School Council is committed to supporting the Parents Association as they plan and prepare for our School Fair in November with a focus on the silent auction. 4 PA NEWS What a lovely morning we had on Friday with our Father s Day Shared Brekkie. It was so heart-warming to see so many dads, granddads and special friends join us for the delicious spread; the Junior Campus courtyard was a throng of people, food, coffee and conversation. Huge thanks goes out to every wonderful person that contributed to the morning's success - the food delivered to the school was bountiful and looked amazing, the fabulous mums who turned up early to help set up, sizzle away on the BBQs, and then help clean up afterwards - great team work! Once again much appreciation goes out to the Grade 1 Class Reps that coordinated everything - thank you Morven Watts, Robyn Krawitz, Bronnie Keyte and Nicole Padowitz. Hopefully all the Father s Day mugs have been received intact. Please don't forget to bake the mugs so the handcrafted design does not wash off. We hope you all enjoy the free coffee from Zest as well. Footy Fever Day - 22nd September With the last day of Term 3 approaching (yikes!) we are seeking assistance from parents to help out with the Footy Fever Day's sausage sizzle. The day traditionally entails lots of drills and games, followed by the footy sing-a-long, and is always a joy to be a part of. If you would like to be involved and help out on the day, please get in touch by sending us an pa@gardenvale.ps.vic.edu.au. Assistance is needed between 9am and 1pm, to help with the BBQs and food service. PA Meeting - 5th September 7.30pm Our next meeting is Tuesday 5th September 7.30pm in the Junior Campus Hall. If you have some great ideas for fundraising or social events for next year please join us. Thanks, Tricia Ciampa, PA President Calling ALL Girls Grade 3 to Grade 6 As mentioned at the Senior Campus assembly on Monday, there is a girls only soccer clinic being held at the Senior Campus for all Grade 3 to Grade 6 girls on Friday 8 th September. This has been organised because we want more girls to be active and healthy at lunchtime and to use the playground more. Qualified coaches who have been approved by GPS to attend on the day are running the girls only clinics.
