Our system covers 25 of all students in the greater Brisbane area and focuses on developing partnerships between staff, parents and students. As a Catholic school the College strives to acknowledge, promote and celebrate the particular God-given gifts of each student. The College's mission statement - "Live Christ's Challenge" through faith, integrity, justice, love and hope reflects the values upon which our school is based. Following the example of Caroline Chisholm, students are encouraged to be people of service and compassion, basing their stance for justice on faith. 2 Curriculum offerings Our distinctive curriculum offerings Students in Years 8 to 10 study the core subjects of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Study of Society and the Environment, Health & Physical Education. In addition, all students in Year 8 study Japanese and Computer Studies. Students are also introduced to Art, Graphics, Industrial Technology and Design, Drama, Home Economics and Music which they study for one Semester. In addition to the core subjects, students in Year 9 & 10 select 3 elective subjects which include Art, Business Studies, Certificate I in Business, Computer Studies, Drama, Food & Nutrition, Food & Textiles, Graphics, Industrial Technology and Design, Japanese and Music. The number of classes offered each year is dependent on the cohort's preferences. Students in Year 11 & 12 study 6 subjects which include Authority and Authority-registered subjects. Subjects offered are Religious Education, Religion and Ethics, English, English Communication, Mathematics A, Mathematics B, Mathematics C, Pre-vocational Mathematics, Biological Science, Physics, Chemistry, Art, Graphics Modern History, Ancient History, Music, Physical Education, Home Economics, Information Technology Studies, Business Communication and Technology, Drama, Japanese, Physical Recreation, Creative Arts, Manufacturing, Certificate II Hospitality, Certificate II in Workplace Practices and Certificate III Business. Students also have access to school-based apprenticeships and traineeships and a number of TAFE courses including Cert II in Auto Mechanics, Cert II in Electrotechnology, Cert III in CAD. Extra curricula activities Extra-curricular activities include: Cultural: 1. Overseas trips to Japan and America 2. Public Speaking Competition - Interhouse, Rotary and Lions Youth of the Year competition and Rostrum Public Speaking 3. Music and Drama performances, Musical, Choir - Interhouse and for the wider community Sport: 1. Inter-House and Inter-school sport including AFL, Soccer, Rugby League, Netball, Cricket, Basketball, Cross Country and Athletics. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in District and Regional sport. 2. Other: Cheer-leading and equestrian opportunities Other: 1. Membership in teams, clubs and committees such as peer tutoring, mentoring, Robotics, Web design, Mission, Stewardship, Student Support, back-stage support 2. Participation in competitions such as Optiminds, titration, 3. Activities such as Camps and Retreats, Driver Training Program, Subject related Excursions, Work Placement opportunities, 2
3 How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning With the laptop roll-out to Year 9 students in Term 3, Information and Communication Technologies had transformed the teaching and learning in the classroom. The tools are used by the students to access information, to collaborate with others on the topic, for example, through wikis and blogs and to creatively produce work using online tools such as moviemaker. Teachers access Web 2.0 activities and other online tools to support the delivery of lessons. The College subscribed to Mathletics which enabled the students to reinforce their learning in their own time and space in addition to the time provided in class. Social climate The College uses a Vertical Pastoral Care system or House System. Each House has 5 Pastoral Care teachers under the Leadership of a Pastoral Coordinator. Students generally have the same Pastoral Teacher from Years 8 to 12. Students are very much encouraged to make use of a variety of curricular and co-curricular offerings. Students at the College are involved in Social Justice initiatives as well as the Religious life of the College. Students participate in Reflection Days, Community prayer and College Eucharistic Celebrations. Chisholm Catholic College is a relatively small secondary school where students are tolerant of difference and are well known and supported by staff. The students are encouraged to be involved in Leadership programmes from an early age. In Year 12 the staff are supported by House Captains and three committee leaders. Social justice and community outreach is a strong focus at the College. Students may also be involved in Peer Tutoring, the student breakfast programme, Peer Support, Stewardship groups and programmes run in conjunction with local primary schools. The College also has a clear and consistent Behaviour Management Policy to support student Learning. Our policies are located on the College website. The Responsible Thinking approach is also used at the College to encourage maximum engagement of students in the learning process. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school The College has a cycle of review of goals and performance each year, culminating in an external review every 5 years. During this process feedback is sought from parents, through The College Board, The Parents and Friends as well as from written and verbal feedback. Data is also sought from parents and students from the departing Senior Cohort. Information has also been gathered at Open Days, Orientation Days, Parent Teacher Interview Evenings and subject selection events. This reveals that the vast majority of students and parents value the education at Chisholm Catholic College. The College has a significant upward trend for enrolments, with enrolments increasing by over 10 this year. Year 8 intake has doubled from 87 students in to 176 students in As a regular part of the Professional Development Programme at the College staff are encouraged to give feedback about Teaching and Learning at the College as well as goals and initiatives from the Strategic Plan. Staff are very much engaged planning and review. 3
4 Involving parents in their child s education In addition to the twice a year formal Parent-Teacher interviews, parents are invited regularly to contact teachers as often as they wish through published addresses of all teachers in the Student Planner as well as on the College's Internet site. Parents input and participation in the College setting and review of goals are invited through the Newsletter and letters and through the Parents and Friends association and the College Board. Surveys are often used to gather data. Information is disseminated in the College Newsletter and other publications such as Subject Handbooks are supplemented by Parent Information Evenings.
